Homegarden agroforestry systems that integrate trees with agricultural practices are usually valued for the conservation of farm biodiversity. Despite the system having a significant conservation role, litle is known on woody species composition and diversity following the elevation belt of southwest Ethiopia. A complete enumeration of 72 homegardens (24 each from altitudinal gradient) was purposively selected for woody species inventory.

In plants, cell fate determination is regulated temporally and spatially via a complex of signals consisting of a large number of genetic interactions. Trichome and root hair formation are excellent models for studying cell fate determination in plants. Nowadays, the mysteries underlying the reprograming of trichome and root hair and how nature programs the development of trichome and root hair is an interesting topic in the scientific field.

Nitrogen is essential for rice growth and yield formation, but traditional methods for assessing nitrogen status are often labor-intensive and unreliable at high nitrogen levels due to saturation effects. This study evaluates the effectiveness of flavonoid content (Flav) and the Nitrogen Balance Index (NBI), measured using a Dualex sensor and combined with machine learning models, for precise nitrogen status estimation in rice. Field experiments involving 15 rice varieties under varying nitrogen application levels collected Dualex measurements of chlorophyll (Chl), Flav, and NBI from the top five leaves at key growth stages.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a significant pathogen infecting poultry that is responsible for high mortality, morbidity and severe economic losses to the poultry industry globally, posing a substantial risk to the health of poultry. APEC encounters reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the infection process and thus has evolved antioxidant defense mechanisms to protect against oxidative damage. The imbalance of ROS production and antioxidant defenses is known as oxidative stress, which results in oxidative damage to proteins, lipids and DNA, and even bacterial cell death.

PEDV is a highly contagious enteric pathogen that can cause severe diarrhea and death in neonatal pigs. Despite extensive research, the molecular mechanisms of host's response to PEDV infection remain unclear. In this study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs), time-specific coexpression modules, and key regulatory genes associated with PEDV infection were identified.

Rice, a staple in diets, undergoes digestion post-consumption, often triggering a swift surge in blood sugar among diabetics, intensifying their health burden. Notably, resistant starch (RS) emerges as a potent ally in fostering satiety and mitigating metabolic syndrome in diabetes. The SBEIIb gene, a key orchestrator of starch branching enzymes, plays a pivotal role in starch synthesis, and its genetic alteration can dramatically boost RS content in rice.

Follicular atresia is the primary threat to female fertility. miRNAs are dysregulated in granulosa cells (GCs) during follicular atresia, and have emerged as crucial regulators of the initiation and progression of follicular atresia. However, the downregulated ovary-elevated (OE) miRNAs and their biological functions in ovary remain elusive.

It has four congeners: 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON), 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON), nivalenol (NIV), and fusarenon X (FX). These five mycotoxins have been associated with the detrimental effect on food intake.

Type VI secretion system 2 (T6SS2) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is required for cell adhesion and autophagy in macrophages; however, other phenotypes conferred by this T6SS have not been thoroughly investigated. We deleted TssL2, a key component of T6SS2 assembly, to explore the role of the T6SS2 in environmental adaptation and virulence. TssL2 deletion reduced Hcp2 secretion, suggesting that TssL2 played an important role in activity of functional T6SS2.

The storage period of paddy is a critical factor affecting rice quality, and it is still unclear how fresh rice noodles, primarily made from paddy, respond to changes in the storage period. To elucidate the relationship between the paddy storage period and the quality of fresh rice noodles, this study used fourteen rice varieties as materials and set up three paddy storage periods (six months, nine months, and twelve months). It explored the quality variation patterns of fresh rice noodles processed from these paddies and analyzed the relationship between the two in conjunction with rice quality.

Stilbenes constitute a class of naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds that have been identified in a wide range of plants. In wine, stilbenes play crucial roles in humans, exhibiting anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties, and aiding in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, studies on the synthesis and regulatory mechanisms of styrene compounds in grapes are of great economic importance.

African horse sickness (AHS) is an acute, fatal, contagious disease of animals of the family Equidae and is caused by infection with the African horse sickness virus (AHSV). Based on the outer capsid protein VP2, AHSV is classified into nine serotypes (AHSV-1 to -9) with little or no serological cross-reactivity between them. In 2020, AHS outbreaks caused by AHSV-1 were reported in Thailand and Malaysia, marking the first occurrences of AHS in Southeast Asia.

Objective: This study examines the mediating role of cognitive flexibility in the relationship between home-school co-education (H-SCE) and depressive symptom among vocational college students in urban and rural areas of China.
Methods: Utilizing the Theory of Overlapping Spheres of Influence, this research explores how H-SCE influences depressive symptom, considering cognitive flexibility as a key mediating factor. The study utilized established scales, including the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) for parent-child relationships, the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS), the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D10).

Type-3 effectors (T3E) of phytopathogenic Gram-negative bacteria fulfill a virulent role, causing disease, or an avirulent role, inducing immunity, following their translocation into plant cells. This study aimed to validate the hypothesis that bacterial T3E translocation requires lipidic compounds in plant cell membranes. Based on genetic, molecular, and biochemical assays, we determined that phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P) associated with plant cell membranes is essential for the translocation of T3E by bacterial pathogens.
