The quantification of visceral organ oxygenation after trauma-related systemic hypovolemia and shock is critical to enable effective resuscitation. In this work, a photoplethysmography-based (PPG) sensor was specifically designed for probing the perfusion and oxygenation condition of intestinal tissue with the ultimate goal to monitor patients post trauma to guide resuscitation. Through Monte Carlo modeling, suitable optofluidic phantoms were determined, the wavelength and separation distance for the sensor was optimized, and sensor performance for the quantification of tissue perfusion and oxygenation was tested on the in-vitro phantom.

Oxidative lime pretreatment (OLP) increases lignocellulose digestibility by removing lignin and hemicellulose acetyl content. Digestibility is improved further by adding mechanical shock treatment, which subjects aqueous slurry of biomass to an explosive pressure pulse. Emerging evidence suggests that metformin, an activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), may be useful in preventing and treating pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, whether metformin has an effect on the stromal reaction of PDAC remains unknown. In this study, we first evaluated the expression of AMPK and phosphorylated-AMPK (P-AMPK) in normal and PDAC tissues, our data indicate that reduced P-AMPK expression is a frequent event in PDAC and correlated with poor prognosis and the dense stromal reaction.
