The goal of this study was to calculate the cost of purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) in dairy cows. The data set included 11,051 cows from 16 dairy herds located in 4 regions of the US. Purulent vaginal discharge was characterized as a mucopurulent, purulent, or reddish-brownish vaginal discharge collected at 28 ± 7 d in milk.

Total mercury ([THg]) and selenium ([TSe]) concentrations were determined in California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) lanugo from the Gulf of California in 2021 and 2022. Relationships with sex, morphometrics, and year were evaluated. Following toxicological thresholds of concern for piscivorous mammals, most pups had a [THg] < 10 ppm, one pup (2021) had a [THg] > 20 ppm, no pups had a [THg] > 30 ppm.

A New Strain Energy Function Representing the Passive Behavior of the Myocardium.

Classical models for the passive myocardium, such as the Fung and Holzapfel-Ogden models, are known to have high degeneracy as well as numerous mechanical and mathematical limitations, preventing their utility in microstructural experiments and precision medicine. Hence, the upper triangular (QR) decomposition and orthogonal strain attributes were leveraged to develop a new model using published biaxial data on slabs of left myocardium, resulting in a separable strain energy function. This new model, the Criscione-Hussein model, was compared with both the Fung and Holzapfel-Ogden models by quantifying the uncertainty, computational efficiency, and material parameter fidelity for all three models.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia encountered in the emergency department (ED) and when patients present in acute AF with rapid ventricular rate (RVR), it can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Primary treatment modalities are aimed at rate control with the two most common agents being intravenous metoprolol and diltiazem. Some evidence suggests that diltiazem may be more effective at controlling rate in these patients; however, the dosing strategies, pharmacologic differences, and study designs may play a role in the observation of these differences.

Graphene oxide chitosan composite (GOCS) is recognized as an environmentally friendly composite adsorbent because of its stability and abundant functional groups to adsorb heavy metals, and Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBO) have attracted increasing interest due to their high removal capacity of As(III). However, GOCS is often inefficient for heavy metal adsorption and FMBO suffers poor regeneration for As(III) removal. In this study, we have proposed a method of dopping FMBO into GOCS to obtain a recyclable granular adsorbent (Fe/MnGOCS) for achieving As(III) removal from aqueous solutions.

Deepwater hydrocarbon releases experience complex chemical and physical processes. To assess simplifications of these processes on model predictions, we present a sensitivity analysis using simulations for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We compare the buoyant multiphase plume metrics (trap height, rise time etc), the hydrocarbon mass flowrates at the near-field plume termination and their mass fractions dissolved in the water column and reaching the water surface.

The radiation protection factor (RPF) for vehicles can be calculated to determine the level of shielding protection by the vehicle from external radiation sources. Ladder-type thiazole-fused ,-heteroacenes with an extended π-conjugation consisting of six (SN6-Tz) and nine (SN9-Tz) fused aromatic rings have been synthesized and fully characterized. To date, the synthesis of well-defined fused building blocks and polymers of π-conjugated organic compounds based on the thiazole moiety is a considerable synthetic challenge, due to the difficulty in their synthesis. Ionically conducting, porous separator membranes with submicrometer size pores play an important role in governing the outcome of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of life, safety, and effective transport of ions. Though the polyolefin membranes have dominated the commercial segment for the past few decades, to develop next-generation batteries with high-energy density, high capacity, and enhanced safety, there is a need to develop advanced separators with superior thermal stability, electrolyte interfacial capabilities, high melting temperature, and mechanical stability at elevated temperatures. Here, aramid nanofiber separators with enhanced mechanical and thermal stability dried at the critical point are processed and tested for mechanical strength, wettability, electrochemical performance, and thermal safety aspects in LIBs.
