According to Vernon's structure-of-intellect paradigm, abilities can be conceptualized as a hierarchy, with a factor of general intelligence at the top of the hierarchy, and successively more specific abilities toward the bottom. This paradigm has proven useful for interpreting a number of Wechsler intelligence scales. However, most of the research with this paradigm has used exploratory factor analysis, and the validity of the paradigm for the newest Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III) has yet to be evaluated.

This paper focuses on the Singer-Loomis Type Deployment Inventory (SL-TDI), which is an alternative to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The SL-TDI utilizes a continuous, non-forced choice format and therefore is a more accurate representation of Jung's personality theory of psychological types. The purpose of the study reported here is to evaluate the reliability and validity of scores from the SL-TDI.

To determine if the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-21 demonstrates equivalent validity across different ethnic groups, the authors tested the factor structure of the instrument with a sample of European American (n = 514), African American (n = 154), and Latino (n = 229) college students using confirmatory factor analysis with tests of invariance across groups. For the most part, a 3-factor model with Performance, General, and Somatic factors fit equally well for all 3 racial/ethnic groups. Differences involved only a few items in terms of either the strength of a factor loading or an error term.

H. Tajfel's (1970) minimal group paradigm (MGP) research suggests that social categorization is a sufficient antecedent of ingroup-favoring discrimination. Two experiments examined whether discrimination in the MGP arises from categorization or processes of outcome dependence, that is, ingroup reciprocity and outgroup fear.

Department of Psychology, Texas A&M University, College Station 77843-4235, USA.

Cued recall of categorized lists was used to examine effects of category structure on the creation of false memories. In three experiments, category members that had not been presented on studied categorized lists were nonetheless recalled by participants. Delaying the category cued recall test (Experiment 1) and priming category members that had been omitted from target lists (Experiment 3) increased the frequency of false recall.

Forty Bosnian refugee couples living in the United States completed a translated version of the PTSD Symptom Scale--Self Report, the Behavioral Acculturation Scale, the Marital Satisfaction Inventory--Revised, and a demographic questionnaire. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology was the best predictor of marital functioning and was related negatively to acculturation. After controlling for PTSD, acculturation did not predict marital functioning.

Repeated daily administration of the sympathomimetic agent ephedrine (EPH) leads to an augmentation (sensitization) of locomotor activity in rats. The present experiments examined the impact of repeated administration of the (-)- and (+)-EPH enantiomers on feeding in rats to assess whether the anorexic activity of EPH exhibits tolerance or sensitization during chronic exposure and whether the time course of these effects follows that observed in studies of locomotion. Adult male rats were injected once daily for 12 days with either vehicle or 5, 10 or 20 mg/kg (-)-EPH or with 10 or 20 mg/kg (+)-EPH.

Synergistic interactions between fenfluramine and phentermine.

Int J Obes Relat Metab Disord

Behavioral Neuroscience Program, Texas A&M University, College Station 77843-4235, USA.

'Fen-phen' refers to the off-label combination of the appetite suppressants fenfluramine and phentermine. The rationale for the fen-phen combination was that the two drugs exerted independent actions on brain satiety mechanisms so that it was possible to use lower doses of each drug and yet retain a common action on suppressing appetite while minimizing adverse drug effects. The focus of the present review is to consider whether fenfluramine and phentermine exert actions that are additive in nature or whether these two drugs exhibit drug-drug synergism.

Following a quantitative review examining the relative influence of positive and negative social exchanges on emotional health, a second-order factor model of negative social exchange was tested and supported in a sample of 906 college students. Structural equation analysis exploring the unique effects of negative social exchange and perceived support satisfaction on depression revealed both variables to predict this outcome, over and above the contribution of personality and coping variables. In addition to the direct effects of the Big Five personality dimensions on depression, indirect effects of the Big Five via negative social exchange, support satisfaction, and avoidant coping also were observed.

The ephedrine (EPH) enantiomers, (-)-EPH and (+)-EPH, have different biological activity in the rat, with the (-)-EPH enantiomer exerting a greater impact on suppression of feeding, induction of locomotion, and activation of brown adipose tissue thermogenesis. Recent studies document that (-)-EPH treatment produces an alteration of extracellular dopamine in the brain, an effect that is consistent with the locomotor-stimulating and reinforcing effects of this drug. Whether the EPH enantiomers exert aversive actions in the rat is unknown.

The prominent feeding rhythm evident in rats may reflect circadian variation in activity of feeding-relevant adrenoceptors within the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN). In the present study, separate groups of rats were sacrificed at six time points (ZT0, ZT4, ZT8, ZT12, ZT16, ZT20) over a diurnal cycle. Food intakes were recorded during the 4-h period prior to sacrifice in each group.

Systemic injection of the sympathomimetic agent ephedrine (EPH) stimulates locomotion in drug-naive rats, an effect that may be dependent on the enantiomer of EPH employed [(-)-EPH or (+)-EPH]. The present experiments examined the effects of repeated EPH exposure on locomotion in rats to assess whether these treatments result in drug tolerance or sensitization. In experiment 1, adult male rats were injected once daily with 0, 10, 20, or 40 mg/kg (-)-EPH (IP) on each of 11 days.

Previous assessments of associative nicotine tolerance may have confounded associative effects with novelty-induced stress effects, instrumental learning effects, or both. That is, subjects were tested in novel environments, allowed to practice the test response, or both during the tolerance development phase. In the first study, 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with various doses of nicotine and tested for nociception in the tail-flick and hot-plate tests to assess nicotine's analgesic effects.

Objective: This study examined the impact of childhood physical abuse on self-concept and social competency of older adolescents and assessed perception of parental relationships as a mediator for consequences of abuse on social adjustment.

Method: College undergraduates (n = 660) completed: (a) the Social Skills Inventory (SSI), a measure of social competence, (b) the Self-Description Questionnaire-III (SDQ-III), a multidimensional measure of self-concept, (c) the parent scales of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), a measure of perceived parental support, and (d) the Assessing Environments-III (AE-III), a retrospective report of family environment and parenting practices.

Results: Analyses, controlling for socioeconomic status and ethnicity, showed that a history of physical abuse was predictive of current self-concept, but did not predict social competence as an older adolescent.

Intracerebroventricular infusion of glucagon-like peptide-1-(7-36) amide (GLP-1) reduces feeding in rats, an effect that could be localized to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Intracerebroventricular GLP-1, however, may also induce conditioned taste aversion (CTA), thereby putting into question the specificity of the action of GLP-1 on feeding. The present experiments evaluated the action of PVN GLP-1 (0, 100, or 200 ng) on induction of CTA, on locomotion, and finally, on feeding and drinking in rats.
