They have become more demanding about what they buy or prefer in their food, such as soy-free, gluten-free, or organic products. Administration of probiotic Lactobacillus cultures is an important alternative to the use of antibiotic growth promoters and has been demonstrated to improve animal health, growth performance, and preharvest food safety in poultry production. Whereas gastrointestinal colonization is thought to be critical to their probiotic functionality, factors important to Lactobacillus colonization in chickens are not well understood. In this study we investigate epithelial cell adhesion in vitro and colonization of Lactobacillusin vivo in broiler chickens.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of Arg, vitamin E (VE), and mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) on the immune response and clearance of Salmonella in broiler chickens. In each experiment, 1-d-old chicks (n = 160) were randomly distributed into 4 groups: antibiotic-free diet (negative control, CTL-), antibiotic-supplemented diet (positive control, CTL+), antibiotic free-diet plus Arg and VE (AVE), or antibiotic-free diet plus Arg, VE, and MOS (AVM). Induced molting by feed withdrawal has been a common practice in the commercial layer industry and usually involves the removal of feed for a period of up to 14 d. However, this is a practice that is believed to adversely influence the welfare of the hens and there is a need to examine behavioral responses to alternative molt regimens. In mammals, triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in nonadipose tissue, termed lipotoxicity, develops with obesity and can provoke insulin resistance, overt diabetes, and ovarian dysfunction. The histological distribution of gonadotrophs containing either LH or FSH, but not both gonadotropins, has been demonstrated before in the juvenile and adult chicken throughout the caudal and cephalic anterior pituitary lobes. In the present investigation, the distribution of FSH- and/or LH-containing gonadotrophs was further investigated in the chicken embryo by use of the same homologous antibodies as used in our earlier study. Fluorescent dual-labeling immunohistochemistry revealed that during embryogenesis LH and FSH reside exclusively in separate gonadotrophs, as has been described before in the post hatch bird.
