The fabrication of complex and stable vasculature in engineered cardiac tissues represents a significant hurdle towards building physiologically relevant models of the heart. Here, we implemented a 3D model of cardiac vasculogenesis, incorporating endothelial cells (EC), stromal cells, and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (CM) in a fibrin hydrogel. The presence of CMs disrupted vessel formation in 3D tissues, resulting in the upregulation of endothelial activation markers and altered extracellular vesicle (EV) signaling in engineered tissues as determined by the proteomic analysis of culture supernatant.

Extrachromosomal circular DNAs (eccDNAs) are a unique class of chromosome-originating circular DNA molecules, which are closely linked to oncogene amplification. Due to recent technological advances, particularly in high-throughput sequencing technology, bioinformatics methods based on sequencing data have become primary approaches for eccDNA identification and functional analysis. Currently, eccDNA-relevant databases incorporate previously identified eccDNA and provide thorough functional annotations and predictions, thereby serving as a valuable resource for eccDNA research.

Biohacking Nerve Repair: Novel Biomaterials, Local Drug Delivery, Electrical Stimulation, and Allografts to Aid Surgical Repair.

The regenerative capacity of the peripheral nervous system is limited, and peripheral nerve injuries often result in incomplete healing and poor outcomes even after repair. Transection injuries that induce a nerve gap necessitate microsurgical intervention; however, even the current gold standard of repair, autologous nerve graft, frequently results in poor functional recovery. Several interventions have been developed to augment the surgical repair of peripheral nerves, and the application of functional biomaterials, local delivery of bioactive substances, electrical stimulation, and allografts are among the most promising approaches to enhance innate healing across a nerve gap.

Socioeconomic Status and Access to Care for Pediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Disease in Universal Health Coverage Models.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common major congenital anomaly, affecting one in every 100 live births. Whereas over 90% of children born with CHD in low- and middle-income countries cannot access the care they need, early detection, advances in management, and financial risk protection have resulted in over 90% of children with CHD in high-income countries surviving into adulthood. Despite the presence of universal health coverage, barriers to accessing high-quality cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular care for CHD remain common.

Examining the role of community health workers amid extreme weather events in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

Objectives: The increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events (EWEs) have underscored the need to strengthen climate-resilient health systems and capacity. Community health workers (CHWs) are integral health systems actors with the potential to protect and improve population health in a changing climate. The aim of this review was to synthesize the literature on the roles of CHWs amid EWEs in low- and middle-income countries, the barriers and facilitators to implement these roles, and program supports to strengthen CHW capacity and health system functions.

Hyperelastic material models for simulating deformation of silicone ring pessaries.

Pessaries are removable gynecological prosthetic devices that provide mechanical support for temporary or long-term symptom relief of pelvic floor disorders, such as pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. To date, limited mechanical tests have been performed on physical pessary designs to characterize their behaviour under load; however, custom pessary manufacturing is expensive and time consuming. As an alternative, finite element (FE) modeling can provide detailed numerical insight into the response of a pessary design under load but to date has seen limited application, with little data available for pessary silicone materials.

Background: Prison needle exchange programs (PNEPs) are a critical component for harm reduction in prisons. Little is known about the PNEP access barriers for people who are incarcerated, but the low uptake in the Canadian program highlights these constraints. We aimed to identify the barriers and potential solutions for increasing PNEP coverage in the nine Canadian federal prisons where they operate.

Barriers to and facilitators of improving physical activity and nutrition behaviors during chemotherapy for breast cancer: a sequential mixed methods study.

Purpose: Use qualitative and quantitative methods to explore factors influencing the adoption of guideline-based physical activity (PA) and dietary recommendations among participants enrolled in a lifestyle intervention during and after chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Methods: Among women with stage I-III breast cancer who participated in the intervention arm of the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition early after diagnosis (LEANer) trial, we used stratified, purposeful sampling to interview women who met both, one, or neither intervention goal after the 1-year intervention: (1) 150 min/week moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise via a self-reported PA questionnaire and (2) improved self-reported diet quality measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2015. Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic content analysis.

Testing the PEST hypothesis using relevant Rett mutations in MeCP2 E1 and E2 isoforms.

Mutations in methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2), such as the T158M, P152R, R294X, and R306C mutations, are responsible for most Rett syndrome (RTT) cases. These mutations often result in altered protein expression that appears to correlate with changes in the nuclear size; however, the molecular details of these observations are poorly understood. Using a C2C12 cellular system expressing human MeCP2-E1 isoform as well as mouse models expressing these mutations, we show that T158M and P152R result in a decrease in MeCP2 protein, whereas R306C has a milder variation, and R294X resulted in an overall 2.

A longitudinal study on impact of emergency cash transfer payments during the COVID pandemic on coping among Australian young adults.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused financial hardship and psychological distress among young Australians. This study investigates whether the Australian Government's emergency cash transfer payments-specifically welfare expansion for those unemployed prior to the pandemic (known in Australia as the Coronavirus Supplement) and JobKeeper (cash support for those with reduced or stopped employment due to the pandemic)-were associated with individual's level of coping during the coronavirus pandemic among those with and without mental disorders (including anxiety, depression, ADHD and autism). The sample included 902 young adults who participated in all of the last three waves (8, 9C1, 9C2) of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), a nationally representative cohort study.

Climate change models predict increasing precipitation variability in the mid-latitude regions of Earth, generating a need to reduce the negative impacts of these changes on crop production. Despite considerable research on how cover crops support agriculture in a changing climate, understanding is limited of how climate change influences the growth of cover crops. We investigated the early development of two common cover crop species-crimson clover () and rye ()-and hypothesized that growing them in the mixture would ameliorate stress from drought or waterlogging.

Decolonizing global AI governance: assessment of the state of decolonized AI governance in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Global artificial intelligence (AI) governance must prioritize equity, embrace a decolonial mindset, and provide the Global South countries the authority to spearhead solution creation. Decolonization is crucial for dismantling Western-centric cognitive frameworks and mitigating biases. Integrating a decolonial approach to AI governance involves recognizing persistent colonial repercussions, leading to biases in AI solutions and disparities in AI access based on gender, race, geography, income and societal factors.

Disability severity and risk of new or recurrent intimate partner violence - Evidence from a cohort study in rural Pakistan.

Background: People with disabilities are more likely to experience intimate partner violence (IPV) than those without. Most research examining the relationship between disability and IPV, however, is cross-sectional and approaches disability as a binary variable. This relationship is also important to consider in a South Asian context, where it may be affected by cultural norms surrounding IPV, and resources for people with disabilities.

Evaluating the feasibility of medium-chain oleochemical synthesis using microbial chain elongation.

Unlabelled: Chain elongating bacteria are a unique guild of strictly anaerobic bacteria that have garnered interest for sustainable chemical manufacturing from carbon-rich wet and gaseous waste streams. They produce C6-C8 medium-chain fatty acids, which are valuable platform chemicals that can be used directly, or derivatized to service a wide range of chemical industries. However, the application of chain elongating bacteria for synthesizing products beyond C6-C8 medium-chain fatty acids has not been evaluated.

Background: Sex trafficking is highly prevalent, pernicious, and under-recognized. When an individual is trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation within the borders of a single country, it is termed domestic sex trafficking. Sex trafficked persons can experience severe physical and mental health outcomes requiring medical attention and treatment.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy in high-grade pancreatic and duodenal trauma.

Introduction: High-grade pancreaticoduodenal injuries are highly morbid and may require complex surgical management. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) is sometimes utilized in the management of these injuries, but guidelines on its use are lacking. This paper aims to present our 14-year experience in management of high-grade pancreaticoduodenal injuries at our busy, urban trauma center.

Background: Australian Rural Resident Medical Officer Cadetships are awarded to medical students interested in a rural medical career. The Rural Residential Medical Officer Cadetship Program (Cadetship Program) is administered by the Rural Doctors Network on behalf of the NSW Ministry of Health. This study aimed to assess the overall experience of medical students and key factors that contributed to their satisfaction with the Cadetship Program.

A randomized controlled trial of the Happy, Healthy, Loved personalized text-message program for new parent couples: impact on breastfeeding self-efficacy and mood.

Background: Breastfeeding self-efficacy has been identified as an important influence on breastfeeding outcomes. Among new parent couples, partners are uniquely positioned to be sources of support for developing breastfeeding self-efficacy, yet few breastfeeding programs have attempted to involve partners directly. The purpose of this study was to test the impact of a novel program, Happy, Healthy, Loved, on breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal mood through emphasizing partner support and actively addressing postpartum-specific stress management in a tailored text message delivery program.

Assessment of bidirectional impact of stigmatization induced self-medication on COVID-19 and malaria transmissions using mathematical modeling: Nigeria as a case study.

The continual social and economic impact of infectious diseases on nations has maintained sustained attention on their control and treatment, of which self-medication has been one of the means employed by some individuals. Self-medication complicates the attempt of their control and treatment as it conflicts with some of the measures implemented by health authorities. Added to these complications is the stigmatization of individuals with some diseases in some jurisdictions.

HEROIC: a platform for remote collection of electroencephalographic data using consumer-grade brain wearables.

The growing number of portable consumer-grade electroencephalography (EEG) wearables offers potential to track brain activity and neurological disease in real-world environments. However, accompanying open software tools to standardize custom recordings and help guide independent operation by users is lacking. To address this gap, we developed HEROIC, an open-source software that allows participants to remotely collect advanced EEG data without the aid of an expert technician.
