Macrocyclic receptors can serve as alternatives to natural recognition systems as recognition tools. They provide effectively preorganized cavities to encapsulate guests via host-guest interactions, thereby affecting the physiochemical properties of the guests. Macrocyclic receptors exhibit chemical and thermal stabilities higher than those of natural receptors and thus are expected to resist degradation inside the body.

Ferroptotic cancer therapy is promising in many scenarios where traditional cancer therapies show a poor response. However, certain types of cancers lack the long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 4 (ACSL4), a key modulator of ferroptosis, resulting in therapy resistance and tumor relapse. Because ACSL4 is in charge of the synthesis of ferroptotic lipids (e.

The occurrence of osteoarthritis (OA) is highly associated with the inflammatory hypoxic microenvironment. Yet currently no attention has been paid to fabricating hypoxia-responsive platforms for OA treatment. Herein, an injectable hydrogel microsphere system (HAM-SA@HCQ) focusing on the hypoxic inflamed joint is prepared with methacrylate-modified sulfonated azocalix[4]arene (SAC4A-MA), methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HA-MA), and dithiol-terminated matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) sensitive peptide via a microfluidic device and photo crosslinking technique, followed by encapsulation of the anti-inflammatory drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) through host-guest interaction.

At low temperatures, colloidal particles with short-range attractive and long-range repulsive interactions can form various periodic microphases in bulk. In this paper, we investigate the self-assembly behaviour of colloids with competing interactions under spherical confinement by conducting molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the cluster, mixture, cylindrical, perforated lamellar and lamellar structures can be obtained, but the details of the ordered structures are different from those in bulk systems.

Electrolyte design holds the greatest opportunity for the development of batteries that are capable of sub-zero temperature operation. To get the most energy storage out of the battery at low temperatures, improvements in electrolyte chemistry need to be coupled with optimized electrode materials and tailored electrolyte/electrode interphases. Herein, this review critically outlines electrolytes' limiting factors, including reduced ionic conductivity, large de-solvation energy, sluggish charge transfer, and slow Li-ion transportation across the electrolyte/electrode interphases, which affect the low-temperature performance of Li-metal batteries.

The development of new cryoprotectants for cryopreservation of cells has attracted considerable interest. Herein, five calixarene-based CPAs (SC4A, S-S-C4A, S-SO-C4A, SBAC4A, and CAC4A) were developed, and their IRI activity, DIS property and cryoprotective effect were studied. SBAC4A with a sulphobetaine zwitterion and SC4A with sulfo group modification possessed better cryoprotective effects than the other calixarene-based CPAs, especially for SBAC4A with the enhanced cell viabilities of 16.

Membrane-based separation process for unconventional natural gas purification (mainly N/CH separation) has attracted more attention due to its considerable economic benefits. However, the majority of separation membranes at this stage, particularly N-selective membranes, achieve the desired separation target by mainly relying on the diffusivity-selectivity mechanism. To overcome the limitation of a single mechanism, 2D lamellar MXene membranes with a double selectivity mechanism are prepared to enhance N permeance and N/CH selectivity via introducing unsaturated metal sites into MXene, which can form specific interactions with N molecules and enhance N permeation.

In the face of diversified analytes, it is a great challenge and infeasible task to design and synthesize corresponding macrocyclic hosts to realize the ideal supramolecular sensing. Herein, we proposed a novel supramolecular sensing strategy, guest adaptative assay (GAA), in which analyte was quantitatively transformed under mild conditions to perfectly adapt to macrocyclic host. As a health-threatening "landmine" in cereals, aflatoxins were converted by the aid of alkali hydrolysis to satisfactorily obtain aflatoxins transformants in ionic state, resulting in sensitive response by the guanidinocalix[5]arene•fluorescein reporter pair.

Noble metal compositing is a promising method to enhance radiance intensity of persistent luminescent (PersL) nanoparticles (NPs) via surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for better tumor imaging, but it rarely unites with the pH-response strategy due to the challenge of realizing rigorous pH-responsive spatial distance control as a "button switch" of SPR. Here, ZnGaO:Cr (ZGC) NPs as "pomegranate seeds" are cladded with sodium alginate to form nanoclusters (ZGC-SA), subsequently coated with carboxyl-rich polymers to acquire "pomegranate rind" (ZSPB) and finally decorated with 10 nm gold NPs (AuNPs) on the surface to obtain nanopomegranate structure (ZSPB@AuNPs). Though without deliberate distance control, there are plenty of "seeds" inside ZSPB@AuNPs fortunately at appropriate positions, which could be plasmon-enhanced by AuNPs.

Organic photomechanical molecular crystals are promising candidates for photoactuators, which have potential applications as smart materials in various fields. However, it is still challenging to fabricate photomechanical molecular crystals with flexibility because most of the molecular crystals are brittle and the mechanism of flexible crystals remains controversial. Here, a plastically flexible α-cyanostilbene crystal has been synthesized that can undergo solid-state [2+2] cycloaddition reaction under violet or UV irradiation and exhibits excellent photomechanical bending properties.

For supporting active metal, the cavity confinement and mass transfer facilitation lie not in one sack, a trade-off between high activity and good stability of the catalyst is present. Porous organic cages (POCs) are expected to break the trade-off when metal particles are properly loaded. Herein, three organic cages (CC3, RCC3, and FT-RCC3) are employed to support Pd nanoclusters for catalytic hydrogenation.

Zeolite-supported nickel (Ni) catalysts have been extensively studied for the dry reforming of methane (DRM). It is generally believed that prior to or during the reaction, Ni is reduced to a metallic state to act as the catalytic site. Here, we employed a ligand-protected synthesis method to achieve a high degree of Ni incorporation into the framework of the MFI zeolite.

Nowadays, the development of wide-bandgap perovskite by thermal evaporation and spin-coating hybrid sequential deposition (HSD) method has special meaning on textured perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. However, the common issues of insufficient reaction caused by blocking of perovskite capping layer are exacerbated in HSD, because evaporated precursors are usually denser with higher crystallinity and the widely used additive-assisted microstructure is also difficult to access. Here, a facile "diffusible perovskite capping layer" (DPCL) strategy to solve this dilemma is presented.

The wide applications of the aryl Schiff base require extensive understanding of the mechanism of its formation, which remains unclear. In this work, the detailed formation mechanisms between benzaldehyde and aniline or 4-(9-anthryl) ethynyl aniline were investigated at the CCSD(T)//B3LYP level, and the influence of water molecules and acid catalysis and the stereoselectivity were addressed. The results show that the participation of explicit water molecules greatly accelerates the reactions by alleviating the ring tension of the transition states, and acid catalysis strongly favors the imine formation and provides driving force for the forward reaction.

The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into value-added compounds not only paves the way toward a sustainable society but also unlocks the potential for electrocatalytic synthesis of amides through the introduction of N atoms. However, it also poses one of the greatest challenges in catalysis: achieving simultaneous completion of C-C coupling and C-N coupling. Here, we have meticulously investigated the catalytic prowess of Cu-based single-atom alloys in facilitating the electrochemical synthesis of acetamide from CO and N.

The morphology of materials has a huge impact on their properties and functions; however, the precise control and direct evolution toward specific morphologies remains challenging. Herein, we outline a novel strategy for the morphology modulation of covalent organic frameworks based on COF-300 with the diamond structure, which usually exhibits a three-dimensional shuttle morphology. A monofunctional structural regulator has been designed to break the continuity of the three-dimensional structure.
