In agriculture, promptly and accurately identifying leaf diseases is crucial for sustainable crop production. To address this requirement, this research introduces a hybrid deep learning model that combines the visual geometric group version 19 (VGG19) architecture features with the transformer encoder blocks. This fusion enables the accurate and précised real-time classification of leaf diseases affecting grape, bell pepper, and tomato plants.

Green seaweeds, which make up a major population of total seaweed worldwide, possess various therapeutic properties. The aim of the study directed at isolating a (1 → 4) linked sulfated rhamno xyloglucuronan, designated as UFP-2, from the edible green seaweed Ulva fasciata Delile, and to evaluate its efficacy in modulating immune responses and inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 (Delta variant) infection. Anti-inflammatory potential of UFP-2 was demonstrated through the regulation of key cytokines involved in inflammatory responses triggered by viral infections, including interferons (IFN-α/γ), interleukin (IL-1β/12/33), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α).

Repeated traumatic brain injury has grown in importance as sports-related injuries have increased. Repetitive mild TBI (rmTBI) increases the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as chronic comorbidities like PTSD, depression, substance abuse and neuroendocrine functions. However, no effective therapeutic strategies have been reported for the effective management of TBI.

The rise of various diseases demands the development of new agents with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, enzyme-inhibiting, and cytotoxic properties. In this study, heterocyclic Schiff base complexes of Cu(II) featuring a benzo[]thiophene moiety were synthesized and their biological activities evaluated. The complexes were characterized using FT-IR, UV-Vis, and EPR spectroscopy, TG-DTG analysis, magnetic moment measurements, molar conductivity measurements, and elemental analyses.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by the depletion of dopaminergic neurons. Recent studies highlight the gut-liver-brain (GLB) axis and its role in PD pathogenesis. The GLB axis forms a dynamic network facilitating bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and central nervous system.

Spectroscopic Investigation of Hydrogels Formed from Phenylalanine.

J Fluoresc

December 2024

School of Chemical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, 686560, India.

Supramolecular hydrogels assembled from amino acids, particularly offer promising prospects as biomimetic three-dimensional extracellular matrices. Phenylalanine, an aromatic amino acid, can self-assemble via hydrophobic interactions, notably through 𝜋 - 𝜋 stacking between phenyl rings. Although the self-assembly processes have been studied, the gelation mechanism of phenylalanine as an individual amino acid has received limited attention in the literature.

This study investigated the distribution, sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments of the Western Bay of Bengal (WBoB). Coastal, shelf and slope sediments from the WBoB, collected from different research cruises, were analysed for 16 priority PAH pollutants. Total PAHs (TPAHs) were in the range of 1.

Portable real-time polarimeter for partially and fully polarized light.

Rev Sci Instrum

December 2024

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia V8P 5C2, Canada.

We present a portable polarimeter capable of real-time visualization of partial and fully polarized light over a broad band of wavelengths. Our system utilizes a Raspberry Pi computer with a low-cost data acquisition "HAT" and an integrated photodetection circuit. Wide bandwidth operation is achieved through digital calibration of an arbitrary retardance waveplate presented herein.

Search for CP-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, Illinois 60510, USA.

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity (CP) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ})→ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ}) and ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ})→ν_{e}(ν[over ¯]_{e}) oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters ϵ_{eμ} and ϵ_{eτ}. With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be |ϵ_{eμ}|≲0.

We investigated potential germline-specific radiosensitive biomarkers in the testes of large Japanese field mice (Apodemus speciosus) exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation after the Fukushima accident. Fukushima wild mice testes were analysed via RNA-sequencing to identify genes differentially expressed in the breeding and non-breeding seasons when compared to controls. Results revealed significant changes during the breeding season, with Lsp1 showing a considerable upregulation, while Ptprk and Tspear exhibited significant reductions.

Article Synopsis
  • Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common industrial chemical found in plastics, known for its toxic effects on aquatic life, including cytotoxicity and endocrine disruption.
  • The study developed a new in vitro cell culture system from Daphnia magna embryos to conduct toxicity testing more ethically and efficiently, demonstrating that the cultures could be maintained for two months.
  • Results showed that BPA exposure significantly increased antioxidant activity and gene expression related to stress responses while causing notable DNA damage, establishing the in vitro Daphnia model as a viable alternative to traditional methods in ecotoxicological research.

Article Synopsis
  • The lockdown period led to significant restrictions on human activities, impacting global marine traffic and allowing for a study on shipping emissions, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO), a key pollutant from ships.
  • Analysis revealed a 10-20% reduction in NO emissions over major shipping routes, including those between the USA and Europe, as well as in significant global ports where NO decreased by about 30%.
  • The study concludes that the decline in emissions is linked to reduced vessel density during the lockdown, emphasizing the need for stricter environmental policies in the shipping industry to address pollution concerns affecting public health in coastal areas.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for the analysis of cure rate data with competing risks using defective distributions. We develop two defective regression models for the analysis of competing risk data subjected to random right censoring. The proposed models enable us to estimate the cure fraction directly from the model.
