Wound healing remains a critical challenge in healthcare, requiring advanced wound dressings with superior properties like transparency, absorbency, and biocompatibility. However, gaps exist in the use of marine-derived biopolymers for sustainable dressings. This study addresses this gap by combining κ-carrageenan (KC) with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) to develop transparent and absorbent biodegradable films through solvent casting and lyophilization techniques.

This study focuses on the event-triggered control approach for the mathematical model describing the interaction between the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis) and its egg parasitoid Trichogramma galloi, as well as the combined interaction of Trichogramma galloi and Cotesia flavipes. By employing digital control design, an effective strategy can be devised to minimize the population of natural enemies. Therefore, proposing an event-triggered control mechanism for the sugarcane borer is essential.

December 2024

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Capital Region, Denmark. Electronic address:

We outline a protocol to visualize all mouse lower hindlimb skeletal muscles simultaneously. We describe procedures for orientating the whole lower hindlimb in gum tragacanth prior to freezing, simplifying the proceeding experimental steps, and enhancing the comprehensiveness of characterizations. We then detail steps for quantifying muscle fiber size and fiber type characteristics in a single cryosection using histochemistry and immunofluorescence.

  • A study compared two methods for stopping glucocorticoids in rheumatoid arthritis patients with low disease activity: replacing prednisone with hydrocortisone or tapering prednisone down gradually.
  • The trial included 102 patients and found that after 12 months, 55% in the hydrocortisone group and 47% in the tapering group successfully discontinued glucocorticoids, showing no significant difference between the groups.
  • The results indicated that neither strategy was superior for achieving discontinuation, and there were no serious side effects related to adrenal insufficiency observed.

Several genetic disorders are associated with either a permanent deficit or a delay in central nervous system myelination. We investigated 24 unrelated families (25 individuals) with deficient myelination after clinical and radiological evaluation. A combinatorial approach of targeting and/or genomic testing was employed.

Microbial distribution in Mudbank regions off Alappuzha, South-West coast of India.

October 2024

Laboratoire Microorganismes: Genome et Environnement, UMR CNRS 6023, Université Clermont-Auvergne, 1 Impasse Amélie Murat, 63178, Aubière Cedex, France.

The coastal waters of Kerala, in the South Eastern Arabian Sea (SEAS), are unique during the Southwest monsoon season due to the concurrent occurrence of two physical processes, the upwelling and Mudbanks. However, little is known about the viral ecology and activity in a system where upwelling and Mudbanks coexist, though it is generally recognized that microbial assemblages play a vital role in the food web dynamics of marine systems, particularly in upwelling. Water samples were taken from monsoon and pre-monsoon period from three locations, (M1, M2, and M3) off Alappuzha, on the southwest coast of India to examine the viral activity and distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • Aspergillus species are linked to various conditions in bronchiectasis, including ABPA, AS, and increased IgG levels indicating exposure or infection.
  • A study of nearly 10,000 bronchiectasis patients revealed 6.1% with ABPA, 5.7% with AS, and 8.1% with elevated Aspergillus-specific IgG levels, with these conditions associated with more severe lung issues and exacerbations.
  • Long-term follow-up showed that those with raised IgG levels faced more frequent and severe exacerbations, particularly affecting patients not on inhaled corticosteroids.

Objectives: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a vascular disorder characterized by episodic peripheral artery vasospasms, resulting in paleness, cyanosis, and/or erythema. There are few reports, mostly case reports, on the benefits of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for the treatment of RP. However, there is a lack of objective evidence on SCS-induced modulation of the sympathetic system (eg, vasodilation) in this condition.

Introduction: The growing prevalence and lack of effective pain therapies for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) results in a substantial unmet need for novel analgesic therapies. The transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) receptor is expressed in subsets of nociceptive sensory neurons and has major roles in pain transmission and regulation. In the structures of the knee joint, nociceptors are present in abundance.

Electronic address:

In this study, we have developed agar, a seaweed derived polysaccharide based green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions (Pb, Cu, Cr and Cd) from multimetal solution. Porous cryogels of agar grafted with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) were prepared by freeze-drying. The adsorption capacity and selectivity of the optimized APTES-agar cryogel for heavy metal ions (Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd) were investigated in multimetal solutions.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared fatigue levels in a large group of people with systemic sclerosis (SSc) to typical fatigue levels in the general population, finding that SSc patients experienced significantly more fatigue.
  • Participants included 2,385 individuals, with a majority being female and averaging around 55 years old, and it was noted that 18% reported mild fatigue, 27% moderate fatigue, and 8% severe fatigue.
  • Factors such as age, gender, marital status, fatigue-related lifestyle choices (like smoking and BMI), and specific disease features (like gastrointestinal issues and joint problems) were all linked to higher fatigue scores in SSc patients.

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance has made the quest for antibiotic alternatives or synergists one of the most pressing priorities of the 21st century. The emergence of multidrug-resistance in most of the common wound pathogens has amplified the risk of antibiotic-resistant wound infections. Bacteriophages, with their self-replicating ability and targeted specificity, can act as suitable antibiotic alternatives.

Food security is a major concern due to the growing population and climate change. A method for increasing food production is the use of modern biotechnology, such as cell culture, marker-assisted selection, and genetic engineering. Cellular agriculture has enabled the production of cell-cultivated meat in bioreactors that mimic the properties of conventional meat.

Neural Stem Progenitor Cells (NSPCs) maintenance and neuronal cell differentiation are the two key aspects of sustained neurogenesis in the adult mammalian brain. Transcription factors (TFs) are known to regulate these biological processes under the influence of various neurotrophic factors. Understanding the role of key TF genes in regulating adult neurogenesis is essential for determining the functional complexity and neuronal diversity seen in the adult mammalian brain.
