Background: Essential tremor (ET) is a movement disorder characterized by cerebellar neurodegenerative changes. ET is also associated with non-motor symptoms including cognitive impairment. The neuropsychologic profile of a patient with ET could relate to cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS).

Background: This prospective study characterizes the structural and metabolic cerebral correlates of cognitive impairments found in a preclinical setting that considers the lifestyle of young European men exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including recreational drugs.
Methods: Simultaneous structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography using [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) were acquired on a hybrid PET-MRI system in 23 asymptomatic young men having sex with men with HIV (HIVMSM; mean age, 33.6 years [range, 23-60 years]; normal CD4+ cell count, undetectable viral load).

In-hospital mortality of adult veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) patients remains invariably high. However, little is known regarding timing and causes of in-hospital death, either on-ECMO or after weaning. The current review aims to investigate the timing and causes of death of adult patients during hospital admittance for V-V ECMO, and to define the V-V ECMO gap, which is represented by the patients that are successfully weaned of ECMO but still die during hospital stay.

Timing and causes of hospital mortality in adult patients undergoing veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) have been poorly described. Aim of the current review was to investigate the timing and causes of death of adult patients supported with V-A ECMO and subsequently define the "V-A ECMO gap," which represents the patients who are successfully weaned of ECMO but eventually die during hospital stay. A systematic search was performed using electronic MEDLINE and EMBASE databases through PubMed.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. With the introduction of targeted temperature management more than a decade ago, postresuscitation care has attracted increased attention. In the present review, we discuss best practice hospital management of unconscious out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients with a special focus on targeted temperature management.

Purpose: Although invasive intracranial devices (IIDs) are the gold standard for intracranial pressure (ICP) measurement, ultrasonography of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been suggested as a potential non-invasive ICP estimator. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of sonographic ONSD measurement for assessment of intracranial hypertension (IH) in adult patients.
Methods: We searched on electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library) until 31 May 2018 for comparative studies that evaluated the efficacy of sonographic ONSD vs.

The members of the BCL-2 family are crucial regulators of the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis in normal physiology and disease. Besides their role in cell death, BCL-2 proteins have been implicated in the regulation of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and cellular metabolism. It remains unclear, however, whether these proteins have a physiological role in glucose homeostasis and metabolism in vivo.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled new approaches for detection of mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC). The search for germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes is of importance with respect to oncogenetic and surgical (bilateral mastectomy, ovariectomy) counselling. Testing tumor material for BRCA mutations is of increasing importance for therapeutic decision making as the poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, olaparib, is now available to treat patients with specific forms of ovarian cancer and BRCA mutations.

Background: The regeneration of gingival papillae after single-implant treatment is an area of current investigation. This study was designed to determine: 1) whether the distance from the base of the contact point to the crest of the bone would correlate with the presence or absence of interproximal papillae adjacent to single-tooth implants, and 2) whether the surgical technique at uncovering influences the outcome.
Methods: A clinical and radiographic retrospective evaluation of the papilla level around single dental implants and their adjacent teeth was performed in the anterior maxilla in 26 patients restored with 27 implants.

For many years, imaging of thoracic aorta has been dominated by angiography. Development of new imaging modalities has modified the diagnostic approach to thoracic aortic pathology. The knowledge of the advantages and limitations of each technique enables a better choice for patient evaluation, in particular under emergency conditions.

During a TIPS procedure using the left hepatic vein approach, a Wallstent was misplaced into a dilated paraumbilical vein instead of the left portal vein. The correct shunt direction from the left portal vein to the left hepatic vein was restored by coaxially inserting a second Wallstent through the stretched mesh of the misplaced stent. To prevent such stent misplacement, it seems useful to emphasize the importance of maintaining the exchange guidewire within the distal portion of the splenic or mesenteric vein throughout dilatation and stenting of the liver parenchyma.

Preoperative hormonal therapy has been recently advocated, but remain controversial. The aim purpose is to achieve downstaging, downgrading and improvement of the surgical results. In the last 80 patients undergoing radical retropubic prostatectomy, 28 had preoperative androgen deprivation, for a period ranging from 2 to 12 months with a mean treatment time of 3 months.

The therapeutic efficacy of fluvoxamine has been demonstrated in large numbers of patients participating in comparative double-blind placebo-controlled studies using imipramine as the active reference compound. Overall, patients treated with fluvoxamine for 4 to 6 weeks had significant amelioration of their depression compared with placebo-treated patients. More importantly, the response rate in patients with severe depression was greater than in patients with mild or moderate depression.

The clinical value of Serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in the staging of prostatic carcinoma was evaluated in 62 patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy. Preoperative levels of PSA were compared with the final pathological stage obtained from all surgical specimens examined for capsular penetration, seminal vesical invasion and lymph node involvement. PSA level was closely correlated with the volume and the stage of the prostatic carcinoma.
