Physico-chemical and biological studies on water from Aries River (Romania).

Our work was focused on physico-chemical and biological characteristics of Aries River, one of the largest rivers from Romania. Water samples were collected from 11 sites along Aries River course. We have measured de (18)O and D isotopic composition of Aries River water in these locations and correlated these data with the isotopic composition of aquatic plants and with the pollution degree.

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography in Romania - results from a specific questionnaire.

Unlabelled: Musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) is currently used in daily medical practice, as an extension of the clinical examination. The development of training programmes for MSUS has increased the interest of physicians from different specialties in performing this exploration. We realized a survey in order to describe the current practice of MSUS in Romania, as well as determining physicians' preferences for MSUS training implementation.

Gray scale and power Doppler ultrasonography in evaluation of early rheumatoid arthritis.

Introduction: Ultrasonography provides information regarding synovial membrane proliferation and its vascularization. The AIM of our study was to evaluate the role of gray scale and power Doppler ultrasonography in assessing early rheumatoid arthritis by analyzing the scores determined by the evaluation of synovial proliferation, joint effusion, erosion or soft tissue swelling.

Material And Methods: The study was prospective comprising 34 patients (31 female, 3 men), mean age 45.

Interhemispheric lipoma associated with agenesis of corpus callosum in an infant: case report.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is an anomaly that may occur as isolated or in association with other central nervous system or systemic malformations. We report the case of an infant antenatal diagnosed with ventriculomegaly referred in the postnatal period to our department for imaging evaluation. Ultrasonography showed the absence of the corpus callosum and an interhemispheric lesion highly suggestive for a cerebral lipoma.

Ultrasonographic and sonoelastographic features of pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands.

Aims: The typical ultrasound features of pleomorphic adenomas are considered to be the well-defined contour, the regular, sometimes lobulated shape, homogeneous structure and poor vascularization. The goal of our study was to verify the validity of these features and to identify a typical sonoelastographic pattern for pleomorphic adenomas.

Patients And Methods: Between April 2007 and February 2010, 70 salivary gland masses were examined prospectively (58 in the parotid gland, 12 in the submandibular gland).

Correlations between clinical probability and Doppler ultrasound results in the assessment of deep venous thrombosis.

Unlabelled: Although the assessment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is based on clinical examination, the complementary tests and especially Doppler ultrasound plays the most important role in DVT diagnosis.

Objectives: We aimed to establish the correlations between the clinical probability of DVT based on Wells score and the results of Doppler ultrasound exam.

Method: We included 382 patients with clinical supposition of DVT divided into 3 groups based upon the probability of DVT (Wells score): low, moderate and high, respectively.

Cancer mortality in Romania, 1955-2004. Digestive sites: esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary tree.

Aim: Until recently, gastric cancer was the most frequent digestive neoplasia in our country. Our study presents the first synthesis of data regarding mortality rates from digestive cancers, for a period covering 50 years, in Romania.

Methods: Age-standardized mortality rates /100,000 population, general and/or per gender, concerning six digestive cancers, were identified from the statistics of IARC/OMS (Lyon, France) (years 1955-2002) and of the Ministry of Public Health (Bucharest, Romania) (year 2004).

Acute pancreatitis in a pregnant woman with acute fatty liver dystrophy. A case report.

Acute fatty liver and acute pancreatitis rarely complicate pregnancy. Acute pancreatitis may appear isolated but when it is subsequent to acute fatty liver of pregnancy the evolution is in many cases fatal. We report the case of a 26-year-old primigravida, at 25 weeks' gestation, who developed acute fatty liver of pregnancy and acute pancreatitis after an acute viral upper respiratory tract infection, with an unfavorable evolution to death.

Five years of single-center experience with paired kidney exchange transplantation.

Introduction: Due to the organ shortage, living donor transplantation has become a method to bridge the gap. Paired kidney exchange program (PKEP) is a viable method especially when there are incompatible related living donors. Even if there are still some unanswered questions, this program is current in some centers, and there appears to be a tendency to extend it in Europe.

Arterial compliance in hypertension and heart failure.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between the presence and degree of arterial compliance impairment and, respectively, the clinical conditions of systemic hypertension and/or heart failure. We investigated 19 patients with hypertension, without heart failure (group A), 13 patients with hypertension and heart failure class NYHA II (group B), 10 patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure class NYHA II (group C) and 7 control patients without clinically relevant cardio-vascular diseases (group D). Compliance was evaluated with a Complior device, by measuring carotid femoral and carotid-radial pulse-wave velocities (PWV).

Diet and coronary heart disease in diabetes.

Persons with diabetes mellitus have an increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and therefore it is imperative to identify and treat aggressively all cardiovascular risk factors. The first line of intervention aiming to reduce the cardiovascular burden is dietary therapy along with other recommendations for lifestyle modification. Compliance with life-long dietary changes is a major issue and therefore emphasis should be placed on whole foods and dietary consumption habits.
