Leptospirosis is caused by pathogenic leptospires, posing a significant public health problem. Host susceptibility to Leptospira infection is a multifactorial trait, and the host's genetic background can influence both the establishment of infection and the severity of the disease. Complement Factor H (FH) plays a crucial role in the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and the host.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sewage surveillance is a useful method for detecting viruses in local communities and can help track outbreaks and emerging health threats, as demonstrated in Belo Horizonte, Brazil through the detection of the Mpox virus in wastewater samples over 9 months.
  • - The study found varied detection rates of MPXV DNA, with higher rates in hospital wastewater (40%) compared to municipal wastewater (13.3%), likely influenced by the low number of reported MPXV cases and dilution from large populations served by wastewater treatment plants.
  • - In addition to MPXV, nine other virus families were identified, including SARS-CoV-2, highlighting the potential of genomic sewage surveillance as a key public health tool for monitoring diverse viral activity in both hospital and community settings

Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Hematology, Clinical and Toxicological Analysis Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte 31270-901, Brazil.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for a respiratory disease called COVID-19 that devastated global public health. Since 2020, there has been an intense effort by the scientific community to develop safe and effective prophylactic and therapeutic agents against this disease. In this context, peptides have emerged as an alternative for inhibiting the causative agent.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common condition in hospitalized patients who often requires kidney support therapy (KST). However, predicting the need for KST in critically ill patients remains challenging. This study aimed to analyze endothelium-related biomarkers as predictors of KST need in critically ill patients with stage 2 AKI.

Endothelial Biomarkers in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients: Potential Predictors of the Need for Dialysis.

Kidney Blood Press Res

February 2024

Medical Sciences Postgraduate Program, Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how well vascular biomarkers can predict the need for hemodialysis in critically ill COVID-19 patients.
  • It involved 58 patients in the ICU, measuring biomarkers like VCAM-1 and angiopoietins upon admission.
  • The results indicated that VCAM-1 and the Ang-2/Ang-1 ratio were significant predictors for both dialysis necessity and mortality risk, with specific cutoff values helping to identify high-risk patients.

Syndecan-1 levels predict septic shock in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Trans R Soc Trop Med Hyg

March 2024

Medical Sciences Postgraduate Program, Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Ceará. Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil.

Background: The clinical picture of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated sepsis is similar to that of sepsis of other aetiologies. The present study aims to analyse the role of syndecan-1 (SDC-1) as a potential predictor of septic shock in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Methods: This is a prospective study of 86 critically ill patients due to COVID-19 infection.

Introduction: Up to 70% of intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) sessions in critically ill patients are complicated by hemodynamic instability. Although several clinical characteristics have been associated with hemodynamic instability during IHD, the discriminatory capacity of predicting such events during IHD sessions is less defined. In the present study, we aimed to analyse endothelium-related biomarkers collected before IHD sessions and their capacity to predict hemodynamic instability related to IHD in critically ill patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores the relationship between multidrug-resistant bacteria and their virulence traits using zebrafish as a model, analyzing 46 strains from Brazilian hospitals that were resistant to colistin and contained specific resistance genes (bla).
  • - Ten different sequence types (STs) were identified, with the majority falling under CC258, and certain virulence factors like fimbriae and efflux-pumps were frequently present; however, only ST16 strains showed a significant increase in mortality in zebrafish embryos (52% vs. 29%).
  • - The findings suggest that while several virulence factors exist, ST16 is uniquely linked to heightened virulence in the zebrafish model, indicating the need for additional studies to better

Cardiac remodeling is the initial process in heart failure development. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between endothelium-related biomarkers and cardiac remodeling in hemodialysis (HD) patients and how the presence of high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus modulates these associations. This was a cross-sectional study with adult HD and normal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction-LVEF-patients.

Visceral leishmaniasis is treated with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB), which is associated with nephrotoxicity. Thus, we aimed to investigate nephrotoxicity through novel renal biomarkers in patients with visceral leishmaniasis during L-AMB use. Ours was a prospective study with 17 patients with visceral leishmaniasis treated with L-AMB during their hospital stay.

Objective: Liver transplant (LT) is a definitive therapeutic option for patients with chronic liver disease. However, acute kidney injury after LT (post-LT AKI) is a frequent complication that may lead to graft dysfunction and decrease life expectancy. Delay in AKI detection by traditional biomarkers boosted research with new biomarkers for post-LT AKI as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and syndecan-1.

The tambjamines are a small group of bipyrrolic alkaloids that, collectively, display a significant range of biological activities including antitumor, antimicrobial and immunosuppressive properties. The key objective of the present study was to undertake preclinical assessments of tambjamine J (T-J) so as to determine its in vivo antitumor effects. To that end, sarcoma 180 cells were transplanted in mice and the impacts of the title compound then evaluated using a range of protocols including hematological, biochemical, histopathological, genotoxic and clastogenic assays.

Infection by Schistosoma mansoni during pregnancy: Effects on offspring immunity.

Life Sci

September 2017

Clinical and Toxicological Analysis Department, Pharmacy College, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Electronic address:

About 25 million Brazilians live in areas at risk of contracting the disease caused by the trematoda Schistosoma mansoni, the schistosomiasis mansoni. Although the adult parasites inhabit the blood vessels, probably the main element responsible for the pathology of the disease are the eggs, whose deposition in the liver results in formation of granulomas and hypersensitivity mediated by CD4 T cells. In the course of infection, the profile of T helper 1 (Th1) and Th2 cytokines released by immune cells is correlated with the extent of inflammation in the granuloma and with the disease severity.
