Background/objectives: Bimodal stimulation (BS), which combines the use of a cochlear implant (CI) in one ear and a hearing aid (HA) in the opposite ear, is an established strategy to treat hearing loss by exploiting the unique capabilities of each device. CIs stimulate the auditory nerve by bypassing damaged hair cells, while HAs amplify sounds by requiring a functional hearing residual. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of BS such as speech perception in noise.

Hypercontractile phenotype (HP) of the left ventricle (LV) is an actionable therapeutic target in patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) or heart failure (HF), but its clinical recognition remains difficult. To assess the clinical variables associated with the HP. In a prospective, observational, multicenter study, we recruited 5122 patients (age 65 ± 11 years, 2974 males, 58%) with CCS and/or HF with preserved ejection fraction (EF).

Aims: In patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR), left ventricular (LV) dysfunction is associated with increased risk of heart failure and excess mortality. LV end-systolic diameter (LVESD) is an established trigger for intervention, yet recommended LVESD thresholds apply poorly to patients with small body size. Whether LV normalization to body surface area (BSA) may be used as a trigger for DMR correction is unknown.

Background: The noninferiority of left ventricular pacing alone (LVp) compared with biventricular pacing (BIV) has not been yet definitely documented. In this study, we reviewed all the original echocardiographic measures of the Biventricular versus Left Univentricular Pacing with ICD Back-up in Heart Failure Patients (B-LEFT HF) trial in order to investigate mechanisms underlying LV remodelling with both pacing modalities.
Methods: Patients with New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA) III or IV despite optimal medical therapy, LVEF 35% or less, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) more than 55 mm, QRS duration at least 130 ms were randomized to BIV or LVp for 6 months.

Audio-vestibular symptoms can arise from vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) and basilar dolichoectasia (BD). Given the dearth of available information, herein we reported our experience with different audio-vestibular disorders (AVDs) observed in a case series of VBD patients. Furthermore, a literature review analyzed the possible relationships between epidemiological, clinical, and neuroradiological findings and audiological prognosis.

Background: Hearing loss, occurring in 1-3/1,000 newborns in the well-babies population, is one of the most common congenital diseases, and hearing screening at birth still represents the only means for its early detection. Since 2011 the Emilia Romagna Regional Health Agency has recommended Newborn Hearing Screening for all babies at its birth points and for newborns moving to the region. The aims of this study are to analyze the results of this regional-based Newborn Hearing Screening program and to discuss the impact of the legislative endorsement on the organization.

Older adults with hearing loss have difficulties during conversation with others because an elevated auditory threshold reduces speech intelligibility, especially in noisy environments. Listening and comprehension often become exhausting tasks for hearing-impaired elders, resulting in social isolation and depression. The aim of the present study was to investigate the advantages of hearing aid use in relation to relief from listening-related fatigue, which is still controversial.

Background The COVID-19-related pulmonary effects may negatively impact pulmonary hemodynamics and right ventricular function. We examined the prognostic relevance of right ventricular function and right ventricular-to-pulmonary circulation coupling assessed by bedside echocardiography in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia and a large spectrum of disease independently of indices of pneumonia severity and left ventricular function. Methods and Results Consecutive COVID-19 subjects who underwent full cardiac echocardiographic evaluation along with gas analyses and computed tomography scans were included in the study.

In our commentary we elucidated the fact that functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) is divided into two morphological subtypes: annular dilation with normal leaflet motion (Carpentier type I) and restricted systolic motion with left ventricular remodeling or dysfunction (Carpentier type IIIb). However, these phenotypes show some degree of overlap and there are currently no distinctive diagnostic cut-off values, therefore they may represent a continuum of the same disease. Moreover, correct left chambers quantification is critical for differentiating between atrial FMR and ventricular FMR.

Purpose: Cochlear implant (CI) users do not receive much of the auditory information necessary for an accurate perception of music. This usually entails a dissatisfaction with the music they hear, so that their quality of life may potentially be affected. The main aim of this paper was to translate and validate into Italian an instrument to evaluate these aspects-The Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (MuRQoL)-to help the work of clinicians and therapists.

Few studies conducted to date have observed general movements in infants affected by hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who underwent therapeutic hypothermia. We investigated whether foot-to-foot contact (FF) could support the predictive value of fidgety movements (FMs) in infants affected by HIE and treated with brain cooling. Spontaneous motility was video recorded for 3-5 min at 12 weeks post-term age in 58 full-term newborn infants affected by perinatal asphyxia who were cooled due to moderate to severe HIE.

Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI), especially to the right hemisphere, can result in difficulty using or understanding prosodic contours in speech. Prosody is used to convey emotional connotation or linguistic intent and includes pitch, loudness, rate, and voice quality. A disorder in the comprehension or production of prosody is known as aprosodia; despite the communication disability caused by prosodic disorders, the assessment and treatment of aprosodia following ABI has received scant attention.
