Digital solutions for migrant and refugee health: a framework for analysis and action.

Digital technologies can help support the health of migrants and refugees and facilitate research on their health issues. However, ethical concerns include security and confidentiality of information; informed consent; how to engage migrants in designing, implementing and researching digital tools; inequitable access to mobile devices and the internet; and access to health services for early intervention and follow-up. Digital technical solutions do not necessarily overcome problems that are political, social, or economic.

Genetic testing is pivotal in diagnosis, genetic counselling, prognosis and access to clinical trials, and new gene-specific therapies. These guidelines recommend genetic testing in all IRD patients and provide a detailed assessment of available testing methods, ensuring that genetic counselling is integrated into ophthalmic care.

Health-Related Quality of Life with Iatrogenic Inferior Alveolar Nerve Injuries Treated with Photobiomodulation: A Comparative Study.

: Photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) creates a biostimulatory or modulatory effect, promoting tissue regeneration and improving patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). PBM has shown promise as an effective treatment and management strategy for peripheral nerve injuries, including inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) damage. This study aims to assess the impact of PBM on HRQoL in patients with iatrogenic IAN injuries.

Peripheral immune profiling of soft tissue sarcoma: perspectives for disease monitoring.

Studying the tumor microenvironment and surrounding lymph nodes is the main focus of current immunological research on soft tissue sarcomas (STS). However, due to the restricted opportunity to examine tumor samples, alternative approaches are required to evaluate immune responses in non-surgical patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the peripheral immune profile of STS patients, characterize patients accordingly and explore the impact of peripheral immunotypes on patient survival.

Evaluating the Impact of Different Treatments on the Quality of Life in Patients With Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Scoping Review.

The profound impact of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) on patients' quality of life (QoL) highlights the critical need to identify effective treatments for this condition. This study aims to evaluate and compare the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among individuals diagnosed with BMS, focusing on different treatment modalities. For that purpose, a scoping review was designed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) for scoping review reporting guidelines and the registration with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO).

GJA1/Cx43 (gap junction protein alpha 1) has long been associated with gap junctions-mediated communication between adjacent cells. However, recent data have defied this concept, with studies implicating GJA1 in other biological processes, such as macroautophagy/autophagy regulation, mitochondrial activity and extracellular vesicles biology. In our recent study we unveiled an additional role played by GJA1 in lysosomal trafficking.

Studies have addressed the metabolic effects of liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) in inhibiting the effects evoked by ghrelin, mainly in glucose homeostasis, insulin resistance, and lipid metabolism.

Connexin43 promotes exocytosis of damaged lysosomes through actin remodelling.

A robust and efficient cellular response to lysosomal membrane damage prevents leakage from the lysosome lumen into the cytoplasm. This response is understood to happen through either lysosomal membrane repair or lysophagy. Here we report exocytosis as a third response mechanism to lysosomal damage, which is further potentiated when membrane repair or lysosomal degradation mechanisms are impaired.

Early Methylglyoxal Exposure Leads to Worsened Cardiovascular Function in Young Rats.

Background: Though maternal diabetes effects are well described in the literature, the effects of maternal diabetes in postnatal phases are often overlooked. Diabetic individuals have higher levels of circulating glycotoxins, and there is a positive correlation between maternal-derived glycotoxins and circulating glycotoxins in their progeny. Previous studies evaluated the metabolic effects of high glycotoxin exposure during lactation in adult animals.

ANO2 Genetic Variants and Anti-VEGF Treatment Response in Neovascular AMD: A Pharmacogenetic Substudy of VIEW 1 and VIEW 2.

Purpose: This analysis investigated potential associations between gene variants and clinical end points in the VIEW 1 and 2 randomized clinical trials of intravitreal aflibercept and ranibizumab in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods: A genome-wide association analysis was conducted in a subgroup of patients from VIEW 1 and 2 consenting to the optional pharmacogenetic analysis.

Results: Data were pooled from 780 samples from patients representative of the overall VIEW 1 and 2 populations.

Retinal Dystrophies Associated With Peripherin-2: Genetic Spectrum and Novel Clinical Observations in 241 Patients.

Purpose: To describe the clinical, electrophysiological and genetic spectrum of inherited retinal diseases associated with variants in the PRPH2 gene.

Methods: A total of 241 patients from 168 families across 15 sites in 9 countries with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in PRPH2 were included. Records were reviewed for age at symptom onset, visual acuity, full-field ERG, fundus colour photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and SD-OCT.

Challenges and Management of Capillary Intraosseous Hemangioma in the Mandibular Symphysis: A Case Report.

Capillary intraosseous hemangioma is a benign vascular neoplasm that affects bone tissue, yet its occurrence in the jaw bones has been seldom reported in the literature. We present a case of a capillary intraosseous hemangioma located in the mandibular symphysis of a 28-year-old male. Initially addressed by the patient's dentist as an infectious lesion of endodontic origin, the sudden worsening of the condition, marked by the development of a rapidly expanding exophytic mandibular lesion and tooth mobility, led to the consideration of various potential diagnoses.

Reflections about Blockchain in Health Data Sharing: Navigating a Disruptive Technology.

A comprehensive analysis was performed, considering blockchain technology (BT) properties in digital health, addressing medicolegal, privacy, and regulatory considerations. Adherence to personal data protection and healthcare regulatory guidelines were analyzed and compared for GDPR (Europe), HIPAA (United States), CCPA (California), PIPEDA (Canada), the Privacy Act of 1988 (Australia), APPI (Japan), and LGPD (Brazil). Issues such as health systems, strengthening and aligning policy orientations and initiatives, and emphasizing the role of data analysis in shaping health policies were explored.

Oral Gastric Heterotopia: First Reported Case in the Hard Palate.

Gastric heterotopia is characterized by the presence of mature gastric tissue outside the stomach, yet its occurrence in the palate has not been previously documented. We describe a case of gastric heterotopia in the hard palate of an elderly female patient, presenting as a swollen mass with associated secretion. Given the patient's age and clinical symptoms, a presumptive diagnosis of a malignant tumor originating from the minor salivary glands was made.

Late-Onset Masseteric Metastasis of Malignant Melanoma in a Patient With Neurofibromatosis and Lipomatosis: A Diagnostic Challenge and Case Report.

Melanoma and neurofibromatosis (NF) are distinctly separate conditions, each characterized by unique pathophysiological processes. Nevertheless, their clinical presentations can share overlapping similarities. This report highlights a unique case involving a 68-year-old male with NF1 and lipomatosis, whose unwavering belief that a developing mass in the masseter region was benign and linked to the pre-existing diagnoses contributed to a significant delay in seeking healthcare.

New Insights into Photobiomodulation of the Vaginal Microbiome-A Critical Review.

The development of new technologies such as sequencing has greatly enhanced our understanding of the human microbiome. The interactions between the human microbiome and the development of several diseases have been the subject of recent research. In-depth knowledge about the vaginal microbiome (VMB) has shown that dysbiosis is closely related to the development of gynecologic and obstetric disorders.

Digital pathology implementation in a private laboratory: The CEDAP experience.

Introduction: The transition to digital pathology has been carried out by several laboratories across the globe, with some cases described in Portugal. In this article, we describe the transition to digital pathology in a high-volume private laboratory, considering the main challenges and opportunities.

Material And Methods: Our process started in 2020, with laboratory workflow adaptation and we are currently using a high-capacity scanner (Aperio GT450DX) to digitize slides at 20×.

Insights and future directions for the application of perinatal derivatives in eye diseases: A critical review of preclinical and clinical studies.

Perinatal derivatives (PnD) are gaining interest as a source for cell-based therapies. Since the eye is easily accessible to local administration, eye diseases may be excellent candidates to evaluate novel therapeutic approaches. With this work, we performed a systematic review of published preclinical and clinical studies addressing PnD in the treatment of ocular diseases.

The COVID-19 Impact on Oral Healthcare Demand and Performance: The Experience of a Clinical and Academic Centre in Portugal (EU).

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has reshaped the global landscape as we know it and had a tremendous effect on healthcare systems around the world. However, its impact on oral healthcare is still to be fully assessed. The aim of this study was to understand if and how COVID-19 affected the demand and performance of oral healthcare, taking the Clinical and Academic Centre of Coimbra as an example, more specifically, the Department of Stomatology of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre and the Dentistry Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.
