Electronic address:

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the most common complication of cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery-associated AKI (CSA-AKI) is caused by systemic and renal hemodynamic impairment and parenchymal injury. Prophylaxis of CSA-AKI remains an unmet priority, for which preventive strategies based on drug therapies, hydration procedures, and remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) have been tested in pre-clinical and clinical studies, with variable success.

Purpose: Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) commonly experience sleep-related issues and are susceptible to stress. Moreover, variatiaons in their vision are often linked to anxiety, stress and drowsiness, indicating that stress and sleep deprivation lead to a decline in vision, and vision improves when both are mitigated. The objective of this study was to investigate the utility of salivary biomarkers as biochemical indicators of anxiety and sleep deprivation in RP patients.

A reduced order model formulation for left atrium flow: an atrial fibrillation case.

Biomech Model Mechanobiol

August 2024

Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA), Mathlab, Trieste, Italy.

A data-driven reduced order model (ROM) based on a proper orthogonal decomposition-radial basis function (POD-RBF) approach is adopted in this paper for the analysis of blood flow dynamics in a patient-specific case of atrial fibrillation (AF). The full order model (FOM) is represented by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, discretized with a finite volume (FV) approach. Both the Newtonian and the Casson's constitutive laws are employed.

Introduction: Prevalence and mortality of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in intensive care units (ICU) are unacceptably high. There is scarce literature on post-operative sepsis-induced ARDS despite that sepsis and major surgery are conditions associated with ARDS. We aimed to examine the impact of post-operative sepsis-induced ARDS on 60-day mortality.

Functional network properties in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder assessed with high-density electroencephalography.

Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry

February 2024

Psychiatry Department, School of Medicine, University of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain.; Psychiatry Service, Clinical University Hospital of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain.. Electronic address:

Background: The study of the cortical functional network properties in schizophrenia (SZ) may benefit from the use of graph theory parameters applied to high-density electroencephalography (EEG). Connectivity Strength (CS) assesses global synchrony of the network, and Shannon Graph Complexity (SGC) summarizes the network distribution of link weights and allows distinguishing between primary and secondary pathways. Their joint use may help in understanding the underpinnings of the functional network hyperactivation and task-related hypomodulation previously described in psychoses.

Background: The medical community is beginning to recognize that retinitis pigmentosa (RP), due to its disabling progression, eventually leads to a reduction in the patient´s quality of life, a direct economic impact, and an increase in the burden on the health care system. There is no curative treatment for the origin of the disease, and most of the current interventions fail in reducing the associated negative psychological states, such as anxiety and depression, which lead to increased variability of vision and pose a continuous threat to the patient's independence.

Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of oral melatonin (OM) administration alone and combined with short-wavelength light (SWL)-blocking filters on patients with RP and test their effectiveness in improving the level of stress and sleep problems in many of these patients.

Introduction: Dermatological information on social media is dominated by misleading and potentially harmful content from nonexperts. Literature suggests that, to address this issue, dermatologists should develop an online presence. However, the successful presence of dermatologists on social media has been criticized for focusing on cosmetic dermatology and not representing the broad spectrum of the specialty.

Diagnosis of cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI), a syndrome of sudden renal dysfunction occurring in the immediate post-operative period, is still sub-optimal. Standard CSA-AKI diagnosis is performed according to the international criteria for AKI diagnosis, afflicted with insufficient sensitivity, specificity, and prognostic capacity. In this article, we describe the limitations of current diagnostic procedures and of the so-called injury biomarkers and analyze new strategies under development for a conceptually enhanced diagnosis of CSA-AKI.

One of the strongest risk factors for death in individuals undergoing cardiac surgery is Cardiac Surgery Associated-Acute Kidney Injury (CSA-AKI). Although the minimum kidney oxygen delivery index (DOi) during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been reported, the optimal threshold value has not yet been established. A prospective study was conducted from June 2012 to January 2016 to asses how DOi influences the pathogenesis of CSA-AKI, as well as its most favorable cut-off value.

Relation between EEG resting-state power and modulation of P300 task-related activity in theta band in schizophrenia.

Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry

June 2022

Psychiatry Department, School of Medicine, University of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain; Psychiatry Service, University Hospital of Valladolid, Valladolid, Spain; Neuroscience Institute of Castilla y León (INCYL), University of Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain. Electronic address:

There is some consistency in previous EEG findings that patients with schizophrenia have increased resting-state cortical activity. Furthermore, in previous work, we have provided evidence that there is a deficit in the modulation of bioelectrical activity during the performance of a P300 task in schizophrenia. Our hypothesis here is that a basal hyperactivation would be related with altered ability to change or modulate cortical activity during a cognitive task.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a widely held concern related to a substantial burden of morbidity, mortality and expenditure in the healthcare system. AKI is not a simple illness but a complex conglomeration of syndromes that often occurs as part of other syndromes in its wide clinical spectrum of the disease. Genetic factors have been suggested as potentially responsible for its susceptibility and severity.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex, multifactorial and progressive retinal disease affecting millions of people worldwide. In developed countries, it is the leading cause of vision loss and legal blindness among the elderly. Although the pathogenesis of AMD is still barely understood, recent studies have reported that disorders in the regulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) play an important role in its etiopathogenesis.
