Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds to an infection damaging its own tissues. Sepsis survivors sometimes suffer from immunosuppression increasing the risk of death. To our best knowledge, there is no 'gold standard' for defining immunosuppression except for a composite clinical end point.

Background: The specific characteristics of copy number variations (CNVs) require specific methods of detection and characterization. We developed the Easy One-Step Amplification and Labeling procedure for CNV detection (EOSAL-CNV), a new method based on proportional amplification and labeling of amplicons in 1 PCR.
Methods: We used tailed primers for specific amplification and a pair of labeling probes (only 1 labeled) for amplification and labeling of all amplicons in just 1 reaction.
Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome (BOS) is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis caused by heterozygous mutations in LEMD3 and characterized by connective tissue nevi and sclerotic bone lesions known as osteopoikilosis. We report a family with three individuals affected by BOS, two of whom manifested clinical and histopathological peculiarities, presenting with a depressed indurated plaque as the main cutaneous manifestation instead of the classic connective tissue nevi. Notable elastorrhexis was present in both biopsies.

Keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum (KCM) is a rare variant of keratoacanthoma (KA), characterized by progressive peripheral growth, and usually devoid of deep invasion. Different systemic (oral retinoids) or topical treatments have been reported, but there is not a well-defined therapeutic protocol. We report the case of a KCM developing after photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the right leg of a 64-year-old woman.

Stability studies are necessary in healthcare settings as they facilitate fast, cost-effective and efficient work related to batch manufacturing and availability of supplies. We studied the stability of 1-10 mg/mL mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in polypropylene 5% dextrose infusion bags prepared from Cellcept and with a generic brand name (Micofenolato de Mofetilo Accord) at different storage temperatures. To ensure chemical compatibility during preparation, we also tested MMF sorption to the Equashield closed-system drug transfer device used in this step.

The aim of this study was to develop a novel method to detect circulating histones H3 and H2B in plasma based on multiple reaction monitoring targeted mass spectrometry and a multiple reaction monitoring approach (MRM-MS) for its clinical application in critical bacteriaemic septic shock patients. Plasma samples from 17 septic shock patients with confirmed bacteraemia and 10 healthy controls were analysed by an MRM-MS method, which specifically detects presence of histones H3 and H2B. By an internal standard, it was possible to quantify the concentration of circulating histones in plasma, which were significantly higher in patients, and thus confirmed their potential as biomarkers for diagnosing septic shock.

The introduction of Rituximab has improved the outcome and survival rates of Burkitt lymphoma (BL). However, early relapse and refractoriness are current limitations of BL treatment and new biological factors affecting the outcome of these patients have not been explored. This study aimed to identify the presence of genomic changes that could predict the response to new therapies in BL.

We aimed to identify metabolomic biomarkers of sepsis in urine by (1)H-NMR spectroscopy to assess the severity and to predict outcomes. Urine samples were collected from 64 patients with severe sepsis or septic shock in the ICU for a (1)H NMR spectra acquisition.

Background And Aims: Individuals with tumours showing mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency not linked to germline mutations or somatic methylation of MMR genes have been recently referred as having 'Lynch-like syndrome' (LLS). The genetic basis of these LLS cases is unknown. MUTYH-associated polyposis patients show some phenotypic similarities to Lynch syndrome patients.
