Cognitive decline is a frequent complaint in healthy controls and neurological patients, regardless of the underlying pathology. Whilst cognitive impairment can be easily diagnosed in the more advanced stages of neurodegenerative diseases, early detection can be challenging. This is mainly the consequence of the incomplete understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

Right atrial and right ventricular strain: prognostic value depends on the severity of tricuspid regurgitation.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

November 2024

Cardiology, University of Rennes, CHU Rennes, Inserm, LTSI - UMR 1099, 2 Rue Henri le Guilloux, F-35000 Rennes, France.

Aims: Assessing right heart function is challenging, particularly when significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is present. Amongst available echocardiographic techniques for assessment, literatures suggest that strain imaging may be more reliable and less susceptible to loading conditions. Thus, we aimed to assess the validity of right atrial (RA) and right ventricular (RV) strain relative to conventional metrics as well as their utility in predicting patient outcomes in TR.

Metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) represents a molecularly heterogeneous group of cancers with varying radioactive iodine (RAI) and [F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake patterns potentially correlated with the degree of de-differentiation through the so-called "flip-flop" phenomenon. However, it is unknown if RAI and FDG uptake patterns correlate with molecular status or metastatic site. A retrospective analysis of metastatic DTC patients (n = 46) with radioactive 131-iodine whole body scan (WBS) and FDG-PET imaging between 2008 and 2022 was performed.

Guttapercha Improves In Vitro Bioactivity and Dentin Remineralization Ability of a Bioglass Containing Polydimethylsiloxane-Based Root Canal Sealer.

Molecules

October 2023

Laboratory of Biomaterials and Oral Pathology, Unit of Odontostomatological Sciences, Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences, University of Bologna, Via San Vitale 59, 40136 Bologna, Italy.

Guttapercha (GP, trans-1,4-polyisoprene) is the most used tooth root filling material, and it must be used with an appropriate cement (typically a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based sealer) to ensure an adequate canal obturation. This study aimed to assess the bioactivity and dentin remineralization ability of a bioglass containing PDMS commercial endodontic sealer, BG-PDMS (GuttaFlow Bioseal), and to evaluate the possible influence of a GP cone (Roeko GP point) on the mineralization process. To this end, BG-PDMS disks were aged alone or in the presence of a GP cone in Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (28 d, 37 °C).

Sepsis represents one of the leading causes of death in newborns and infants, and prompt diagnosis is essential for achieving favorable outcomes. Regarding malnourished children with concurrent infection, most studies have focused, besides blood culture, on C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. Because malnutrition has a deleterious effect on cellular immune competence, the present study characterized the acute-phase response, including hematological indices, in response to sepsis.
