Research on the neurochemical aspects of the pathophysiology of autism is still increasing and publications are abundant. In this paper we reviewed significant data from the last decade and recent research results from our center. We focused on molecules influencing the central nervous system (CNS) and consecutively responsible for typical autistic behavior.

Major depression is accompanied by various direct and indirect indicators of a moderate activation of the inflammatory response system (IRS). Increased production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6 and interferon (IFNgamma), may play a crucial role in the immune and acute phase response in depression. Lower serum zinc and changes in the erythron are indirect indicators of IRS activation in depression.

The aim of the present study is to examine serum vitamin E concentrations in major depressed patients versus normal volunteers.

Background: Many studies have demonstrated that major depression is related to an activation of the inflammatory response system (IRS) with an increased production of proinflammatory cytokines. It has been shown that tricyclic antidepressants and serotonin reuptake inhibitors suppress the activation of the IRS in depression and have negative immunoregulatory effects in vitro. Little is known on the immune effects of moclobemide, a reversible monoamine oxidase A inhibitor.

Background: There is now some evidence that anxiety or anxiety disorders are related to increased activity of serum prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) and that major depression is related to lower serum PEP. The aims of the present study were to examine (i) the effects of pregnancy and delivery on serum PEP and (ii) the relationships between serum PEP and postpartum depression, anxiety in the early puerperium and a past history of depression.
Methods: Serum PEP activity was measured in 11 healthy nonpregnant and in 98 pregnant women 3 days before delivery and 1 and 3 days after delivery.

There is now some evidence that major depression is accompanied by activation of the inflammatory response system (IRS). Other signs of IRS activation, which have been reported in major depression are lowered serum zinc (Zn) and serum albumin (Alb) concentrations. In serum, Zn is closely bound to Alb.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, painful musculoskeletal disorder characterized by widespread pain, pressure hyperalgesia, morning stiffness and by an increased incidence of depressive symptoms. The etiology, however, has remained elusive. The aim of the present study was to examine the inflammatory response system (IRS) in fibromyalgia.

Methods: The aim of the present study was to examine the inflammatory response system in patients with PTSD through measurements of serum IL-6, sIL-6R, sgp130 (the IL-6 signal transducing protein), sIL-1R antagonist (sIL-1RA; an endogenous IL-1 receptor antagonist), CC16 (an endogenous anticytokine), and sCD8 (the T suppressor-cytotoxic antigen).
Results: Serum IL-6 and sIL-6R, but not sgp130, sIL-RA, CC16, or sCD8, concentrations were significantly higher in PTSD patients than in normal volunteers.
Recently, it was reported that there may be an activation of the inflammatory response system in detoxified alcohol-dependent patients without apparent liver disease (AWLD). The aims of the present study were to examine serum zinc (Zn) concentrations, total serum protein (TSP) and patterns obtained in the electrophoretically separated protein fractions in relation to serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-8 concentrations in detoxified AWLD patients. Zn, TSP, SP electrophoresis, and serum IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations were determined in detoxified AWLD patients and age-matched healthy volunteers.

The aims of the present study were to examine the effects of psychological stress on serum PEP and DPP IV activity in humans. Thirty-eight university students had repeated measurements of serum PEP and DPP IV activity a few weeks before and after (baseline conditions) as well as the day before a difficult academic examination (stress condition).

There is some evidence that the pathophysiology of schizophrenia is related to activation of the inflammatory response system (IRS), as indicated by increased serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-6 receptor (IL-6R), IL-1R antagonist (IL-1RA) and IL-2R and lower serum concentrations of CC16, an endogenous anti-inflammatory protein with immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects. The aims of the present study were to examine serum CC16 in relation to IL-6, IL-6R and gp130, the IL-6 transducing signal protein, in schizophrenia and in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Serum IL-6 and sIL-6R were significantly higher in medicated schizophrenic patients than in normal controls.

Serum IL-6 and IL-1Ra were significantly higher in subjects with major depression and TRD than in normal controls.

It has been suggested that (1) the clinical efficacy of the heterocyclic antidepressant trazodone in depression may, in part, be attributed to its metabolite meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP); and (2) the enhancement of the efficacy of trazodone by the addition of fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, may, in part, be ascribed to fluoxetine-induced plasma concentrations of trazodone. After a washout period of 10 days, 27 inpatients with major depression were treated with trazodone 100 mg/day (orally). One week later (T0), fluoxetine 20 mg/day, placebo, or pindolol 7.
