Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) package labeling has a warning for neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAE), most commonly in children and adolescents, especially males. There are several case reports of NPAE in adults treated with oseltamivir, but few document patients with preexisting neuropsychiatric conditions without additional contributing factors. This case report describes a 22-year-old male with a history of bipolar disorder, depression, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who had been stable on his medication regimen before experiencing sudden worsening of symptoms after the initiation of oseltamivir.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperglycemia significantly affects critically ill COVID-19 patients, prompting a shift from continuous IV insulin to other management strategies during the pandemic.
  • A study of 120 mechanically ventilated ICU patients revealed that IV insulin infusions maintained blood glucose levels better (60% in target range) compared to sliding-scale (52%) and oral medications (12-29%).
  • The study recommends continuing IV insulin as the primary method for glycemic control, especially in patients also receiving corticosteroids, due to poorer management outcomes with those combinations.

Professor (Clinical), Patient Care Skills Laboratory Coordinator, Department of Pharmacy Practice, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Wayne State University, 259 Mack Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201, United States of America. Electronic address:

Introduction: Doctor of Pharmacy programs are charged with developing students' empathy by the 2016 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standard 3 and the 2022 Curriculum Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA). Although empathy is essential to optimal patient care, its subjective nature makes it challenging to teach and therefore literature is lacking on best teaching practices. The authors of this paper describe a novel simulated approach to elicit and assess empathy in a pharmacy classroom.

Ment Health Clin

Director of Strategic Initiatives, American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Deaths related to opioid overdoses continue to climb, and there remains a need for innovative strategies to address this ongoing crisis. Harm reduction (HR), a nonjudgmental philosophy aimed at reducing consequences associated with drug use and other potentially unsafe behavior, has emerged as a compassionate and effective approach. Harm reduction further emphasizes overdose prevention and fosters a shift in perspective that recognizes substance use disorder as a disease and not a moral failing.

Buprenorphine Use for Analgesia in Palliative Care.

Pharmacy (Basel)

May 2024

Rehabilitation & Extended Care Line, Section of Palliative Medicine, Michael E DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Houston, TX 77030, USA.

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic long-acting partial µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist that can be used for chronic pain as a sublingual tablet, transdermal patch (Butrans), or a buccal film (Belbuca). Buprenorphine's unique high receptor binding affinity and slow dissociation at the MOR allow for effective analgesia while offering less adverse effects compared to a full agonist opioid, in particular, less concern for respiratory depression and constipation. It is underused in chronic pain and palliative care due to misconceptions and stigma from its use in opioid use disorder (OUD).

Introduction: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the safety of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB) compared to other antifungal agents for secondary prophylaxis.

Method: We conducted a comprehensive search across international databases and reference lists of articles to compile all relevant published evidence evaluating the efficacy and safety of L-AMB versus other antifungals (NLAMB) for secondary prophylaxis against invasive fungal infections. Pooled estimates were calculated after data transformation to evaluate mortality, breakthrough infections, and the frequency of adverse effects, including hypokalemia and nephrotoxicity.
