Purpose: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an ocular emergency that results from acute blockage of the blood supply to the retina and leads to a sudden vision loss. Other forms of ischemic retinopathies include diabetic retinopathy (DR), which involves chronic retinal ischemia and remains the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. This study is the first to conduct a proteomic analysis of aqueous humor (AH) from patients with CRAO with a comparative analysis using vitreous humor (VH) samples from patients with DR.

Background: Different prophylactic protocols are available for preventing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after matched sibling donor (MSD) allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of post-transplantation cyclophosphamide plus cyclosporine A (PT-CY/CSA) versus methotrexate plus CSA (MTX/CSA) as GVHD prophylaxis protocols in adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients who received peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) from fully matched donors.

Methods: The 1-year outcomes of 89 patients treated with PT-CY/CSA and 90 patients treated with MTX/CSA who had MSD allo-HCT for AML using unmanipulated mobilized PBSC were examined and compared.

Current Landscape and Future Directions of Deprescribing and Polypharmacy Practices in Jordan.

Med Princ Pract

December 2024

Department of Nursing Education and Practice Development, Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital (HMGH), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Doha, Qatar.

This review explores the current landscape and future directions of deprescribing and polypharmacy practices in Jordan. The prevalence of polypharmacy, defined as the concurrent use of multiple medications by an individual, has been increasing in recent years due to various factors, such as population aging and the greater availability of medications. However, polypharmacy can lead to adverse drug events, suboptimal medication adherence, increased healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life.

This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors associated with refeeding syndrome (RFS) in preterm infants (≤32 weeks gestational age) during their first week of life. Infants (gestational age ≤ 32 weeks; birth weight < 1500 g) who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), level III, and received parenteral nutrition between January 2015 and April 2024 were retrospectively evaluated. Modified log-Poisson regression with generalized linear models and a robust variance estimator was applied to adjust the relative risk of risk factors.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are cardinal players in numerous physiological and pathological processes. CircRNAs play dual roles as tumor suppressors and oncogenes in different oncological contexts, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Their roles significantly impact the disease at all stages, including initiation, development, progression, invasion, and metastasis, in addition to the response to treatment.

Rotenone is a pesticide that causes complex I inhibition and is widely known to induce motor disability and experimental Parkinson's disease (PD) in rodents. Evidence suggests a crucial role for sirtuin/nuclear factor-kappaB/nod-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 (SIRT1/NFκB/NLRP3) signaling and inflammation in PD and rotenone neurotoxicity. Hesperetin (C16H14O6) is a citrus flavonoid with documented anti-inflammatory activity.

Combined sulforaphane and β-sitosterol mitigate olanzapine-induced metabolic disorders in rats: Insights on FOXO, PI3K/AKT, JAK/STAT3, and MAPK signaling pathways.

Int Immunopharmacol

October 2024

Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Egyptian Russian University, Cairo, Egypt; Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Al-Ayen Iraqi University, Thi-Qar 64001, Iraq.

Article Synopsis
  • Olanzapine (OLA) is an effective antipsychotic for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but it has serious side effects like liver damage and weight gain.
  • This study aimed to investigate the metabolic disruption caused by OLA and explore the protective roles of sulforaphane (SFN) and β-sitosterol (βSS) against these effects.
  • Results showed that SFN and/or βSS alleviated the adverse biochemical and liver function abnormalities caused by OLA by modulating specific cellular signaling pathways involved in metabolism and inflammation.

Attainment of LDL-cholesterol target in high cardiovascular risk type 1 diabetic French people.

Diabetes Metab

November 2024

Nutrition-Diabetes Department, University Hospital of Montpellier, Montpellier, France; PhyMedExp, University of Montpellier, INSERM U1046, CNRS UMR 9214, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the cardiovascular risk in patients with type 1 diabetes, specifically looking at how well they achieve target LDL-cholesterol levels, which are important for reducing heart-related health issues.
  • Researchers included 441 patients, dividing them into high risk (HR) and very high risk (VHR) categories, and examined factors that influenced whether they reached their LDL-c targets, referencing different guidelines from 2016 and 2019.
  • Results revealed that only a small percentage of both HR (35.3%) and VHR (17.4%) patients met their LDL-c targets, suggesting that improved management of cardiovascular risk factors is necessary to lower complications in these individuals.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how bisoprolol and diosmin might protect the heart from damage caused by cobalt chloride (CoCl2), which induces hypoxia and accelerates heart cell death.
  • Researchers divided rats into various groups to examine cardiac function and tissue changes over 21 days, particularly focusing on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers.
  • Results show that both drugs improve heart function, reduce harmful cardiac changes, and may protect heart cells by targeting specific biochemical pathways related to inflammation and oxidative stress.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the protective effects of carvedilol (CAR) against liver injury caused by the drug azathioprine (AZA), which is known for its harmful effects on the liver, in a rat model.
  • - Results showed that CAR significantly improved liver function and reduced damage caused by AZA, restoring the balance of oxidants and antioxidants while also lowering inflammation and apoptosis in liver cells.
  • - The findings suggest that CAR could be a valuable addition to AZA treatment to help mitigate liver damage, enhancing the safety and effectiveness of this immunosuppressant.
