  • Fasciolosis is a zoonotic infection affecting livestock productivity and leading to economic losses, prompting the development of a vaccine using targeted proteins.
  • Researchers predicted B- and T-cell epitopes from proteins glutathione transferase and Cathepsin L-like proteinase, ultimately selecting five specific epitopes for vaccine construction.
  • The vaccine's efficacy was supported by immunoinformatics and biophysics studies, showing it can activate the immune system, stabilize during molecular dynamics, and reduce financial strain from infections.

Association of early dysglycemia with intraventricular hemorrhage and mortality in very low birth weight infants.

Eur J Pediatr

December 2024

Clinical Pharmacy Department, Pharmaceutical Care Services, King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the combined effects of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia on intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and mortality in very preterm infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit from January 2020 to January 2024.
  • Out of 554 infants analyzed, 75.5% experienced hyperglycemia and/or hypoglycemia in their first postnatal week, with IVH occurring in 28.5% of infants and 13.7% resulting in death during the study.
  • The findings indicate that both isolated hyperglycemia and the combination of hypo- and hyperglycemia significantly increase the risk of IVH and correlate with higher mortality rates among these infants.

MicroRNA-1307-3p contributes to breast cancer progression through PRM2.

Thorac Cancer

November 2024

Departmento de Biología Celular y Genética, Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico.

Background: Despite advances in screening and therapy, breast cancer (BC) remains the predominant cancer in women globally. Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is pivotal in carcinogenesis across various cancers, including BC. Evidence indicates that miR-1307-3p is upregulated in BC tumors, yet its target genes are not fully elucidated.

  • Luteolin (LUT), a flavonoid with hypoglycemic properties from vegetables like celery and broccoli, faces challenges in stability and bioavailability, prompting research to use porous starch (PS) as a carrier for its delivery.
  • The study on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice showed that PSLUT significantly improved health indicators, including blood glucose levels, pancreatic function, and liver conditions.
  • The hypoglycemic effects of PSLUT are linked to the regulation of specific proteins (AKT-1 and GLUT-2) and a beneficial shift in gut bacteria, which correlate with improved diabetes-related measures.

Aims: Owing to its underlying inflammatory nature, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains the leading global cause of mortality, particularly post-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a condition with significant risk for further cardiovascular events and mortality. This study aimed to investigate colchicine's effect on inflammation, cardiac remodelling and atherosclerotic risk in STEMI patients.

Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled study on 88 STEMI patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

Purpose: Suboptimal peak inspiratory flow rate (PIFR) is highly prevalent in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) owing to the mismatch of their PIFR with the corresponding inhaler-device resistance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a preliminary dose of pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) on patients with COPD with suboptimal PIFR using Diskus dry powder inhalers (DPIs).

Methods: A prospective, randomized, case-control study included 24 patients with COPD.

This meta-analysis was designed to compare the risk of postoperative wound complications in various orthopedic surgeries (OSs) affected by the perioperative use of biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). The odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were calculated using dichotomous or continuous random or fixed-effect models, based on the meta-analysis data. This study incorporated 14 investigations conducted between 2005 and 2023, encompassing a total population of 19,021 individuals undergoing diverse OSs.

Biomedicines

September 2024

Department and Clinic of Internal Medicine, Angiology and Physical Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, Batorego 15 St, 41-902 Bytom, Poland.

The search for new parameters for the prediction of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or its harmful consequences remains an important field of study. Depending on the low-grade inflammatory nature of diabetes, we investigated three proteins in T2DM patients: 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACCS), granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and Sma Mothers Against Decapentaplegic homolog-4 (SMAD4). In brief, sixty T2DM and thirty healthy controls had their serum levels of ACCS, G-CSF, SMAD4, and insulin tested using the ELISA method.

It is well known that depression, anxiety, and impulsiveness are interrelated; however, studies that have assessed their association with the coronavirus outbreak are scarce. Hence, our study aimed to evaluate the impulsivity incidence and its correlation with anxiety and depression following COVID-19 infection between November 2022 and June 2023. The 201 participants completed the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS), and short UPPS-P scales (urgency, premeditation, perseverance, sensation seeking, and positive urgency) to allow us to determine their anxiety and depression symptoms, functional impairment, and impulsivity, respectively.
