Clinicopathological Features and Survival of Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Ethiopia: A Multicenter Study.

(1) Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest cancers globally, killing over 700,000 people each year. Despite the rising incidence and mortality rates of HCC in Ethiopia, only few single-centered studies have been conducted; therefore, we aimed to explore the clinicopathological characteristics and survival of patients with HCC in multicenter settings. (2) Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 369 patients with confirmed HCC diagnosed between 2016 and 2021.

Perspectives on seamless collaboration between primary and secondary care for oral anticancer treatments.

Patients who take oral anticancer drugs (OACD) alternate between the hospital and the community setting. Little is known about how general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists (CPs) from primary care (PC) can be involved in providing seamless care. In an exploratory qualitative study, semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals from primary and secondary care (SC) and ( = 26) were performed to investigate perceptions of seamless collaboration for patients on OACD.

Falls Among Psychiatric Inpatients: A Systematic Review of Literature.

Background: Falls among psychiatric inpatients are common and have significant health consequences. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the published research on risk factors and consequences.

Methods: PubMed and Embase were searched for relevant studies.

Using provocative design to foster electronic informed consent innovation.

Background: The development of technological applications in clinical research, such as electronic informed consent (eIC), is on the rise. The involvement of end users throughout the design process of eIC is of utmost importance to improve the current informed consent process.

Methods: Using a provocative design, we conducted interviews with 30 clinical research participants.

A qualitative evaluation of the process of creating and implementing an interprofessional care pathway for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs.

Purpose: To investigate factors affecting the co-creation and implementation of care pathways for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs.

Methods: An explorative qualitative process evaluation was performed at four Belgian hospitals, co-creating and implementing a care pathway for patients on oral anticancer drugs. Semistructured interviews and focus groups were performed by a) local coordinators leading an interprofessional project team during the co-creation and implementation stage, b) external implementation coaches, and c) teams of healthcare professionals with a role in the care pathway.

Prevalence and characteristics of registered falls in a Belgian University Psychiatric Hospital.

Objectives: Falls in elderly patients treated in general hospitals have already been the focus of several studies. Research within psychiatric settings, however, remains limited, despite the fact that this population has a number of characteristics that could increase the fall risk. The aim of this retrospective study was to estimate the prevalence of falling in patients with a psychiatric hospital setting.

Challenges related to data protection in clinical research before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: An exploratory study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic brought global disruption to health, society and economy, including to the conduct of clinical research. In the European Union (EU), the legal and ethical framework for research is complex and divergent. Many challenges exist in relation to the interplay of the various applicable rules, particularly with respect to compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The future regulation of artificial intelligence systems in healthcare services and medical research in the European Union.

Despite its promising future, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated decision-making in healthcare services and medical research faces several legal and ethical hurdles. The European Union (EU) is tackling these issues with the existing legal framework and drafting new regulations, such as the proposed AI Act. The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) partly regulates AI systems, with rules on processing personal data and protecting data subjects against solely automated decision-making.

Rethinking informed consent in the time of COVID-19: An exploratory survey.

Background: Owing to the infectious nature of COVID-19, alternative solutions, such as electronic informed consent (eIC), needed to be implemented to inform research participants about study-related information and to obtain their consent. This study aimed to investigate stakeholders' experiences with alternative consenting methods as well as their views on any regulatory or legal guidelines for eIC implementation in clinical research. Results may serve as the cornerstone to rethink the informed consent process in clinical research.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Organization of Cancer Care in Belgium: Lessons Learned for the (Post-)Pandemic Future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed tremendous challenges to healthcare systems. Care for oncology patients, a vulnerable population during the pandemic, was disrupted and drastically changed. A multicenter qualitative study was conducted in 11 Belgian hospitals with the aim to provide an overview of the most important changes that were made in the care of oncology patients in Belgium.

How do cancer clinicians perceive real-world data and the evidence derived therefrom? Findings from an international survey of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer.

The role of real-world evidence (RWE) in the development of anticancer therapies has been gradually growing over time. Regulators, payers and health technology assessment agencies, spurred by the rise of the precision medicine model, are increasingly incorporating RWE into their decision-making regarding the authorization and reimbursement of novel antineoplastic treatments. However, it remains unclear how this trend is viewed by clinicians in the field.

Experiences of patients with cancer and their relatives confronted with COVID-19 related delay or change in care: A qualitative study.

Aims: To provide in-depth insight into how patients and their relatives experienced change or delay in cancer treatment and care due to COVID-19.

Design: A qualitative study including semi-structured interviews with patients with cancer and their relatives.

Methods: Between July and October 2020, 42 patients who were confronted with a change or delay in cancer treatment or care, and 11 relatives were interviewed.

Early Postnatal Outcome and Care after in Utero Exposure to Lithium: A Single Center Analysis of a Belgian Tertiary University Hospital.

Knowledge of the impact of in utero exposure to lithium during the postnatal period is limited. Besides a possible teratogenic effect during the first trimester, exposure during the second and third trimesters might lead to neonatal effects. Uniform guidelines for postnatal management of these neonates are lacking.

Systematic Comparison of Hospital-Wide Standard and Model-Based Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Vancomycin in Adults.

We aimed to evaluate the predictive performance and predicted doses of a single-model approach or several multi-model approaches compared with the standard therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)-based vancomycin dosing. We performed a hospital-wide monocentric retrospective study in adult patients treated with either intermittent or continuous vancomycin infusions. Each patient provided two randomly selected pairs of two consecutive vancomycin concentrations.

Information Needs and Counseling Preferences among Potential Users of the Future Teratology Information Service in Belgium: A Cross-Sectional Study Involving the Public and Healthcare Professionals.

A Teratology Information Service (TIS) does not exist in Belgium yet but will hopefully be established soon. To prepare for this, we aimed to provide insight into the information needs and counseling preferences of the Belgian public and healthcare professionals (HCPs) regarding medication use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. A cross-sectional study using two anonymous, online surveys disseminated via social media, websites, and newsletters addressing Dutch and French-speaking individuals (≥18 years) and licensed HCPs was performed between June and September 2020.

Modularity of RBC hitchhiking with polymeric nanoparticles: testing the limits of non-covalent adsorption.

Red blood cell (RBC) hitchhiking has great potential in enhancing drug therapy, by improving targeting and reducing rapid clearance of nanoparticles (NPs). However, to improve the potential for clinical translation of RBC hitchhiking, a more thorough understanding of the RBC-NP interface is needed. Here, we evaluate the effects of NP surface parameters on the success and biocompatibility of NP adsorption to extracted RBCs from various species.

Objectives: PTA of protein-unbound ceftriaxone may be compromised in critically ill patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) with augmented renal clearance (ARC). CONTACT-Patient-Centred Care Questionnaire to assess care for patients treated with oral anticancer drugs: Development and psychometric validation.

Objective: Instruments to measure quality of patient-centred care (PCC) for the rapidly growing population of patients treated with oral anticancer drugs (OACD) are lacking. The aim of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to assess PCC in the context of OACD.

Methods: The CONTACT-Patient-Centred Care Questionnaire (CONTACT-PCCQ) was developed based on a validated set of key elements (KEs) for patient-centred education and counselling in patients taking OACD, and face validity was evaluated by means of cognitive interviews.

Co-creation with research participants to inform the design of electronic informed consent.

Objective: This study aimed to provide recommendations for a personalized electronic informed consent interface that is adapted to research participants' needs and could enable a longitudinal interaction between the participants and the research team.

Methods: The co-creation process consisted of three co-creation workshops, one focus group discussion, and four semi-structured interviews. In total, 24 participants, who had taken part in four disparate clinical studies in Belgium, were involved.

Clinical Significance of Serum Albumin and Implications of FcRn Inhibitor Treatment in IgG-Mediated Autoimmune Disorders.

Serum albumin (SA), the most abundant soluble protein in the body, maintains plasma oncotic pressure and regulates the distribution of vascular fluid and has a range of other important functions. The goals of this review are to expand clinical knowledge regarding the functions of SA, elucidate effects of dysregulated SA concentration, and discuss the clinical relevance of hypoalbuminemia resulting from various diseases. We discuss potential repercussions of SA dysregulation on cholesterol levels, liver function, and other processes that rely on its homeostasis, as decreased SA concentration has been shown to be associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, and mortality.

However, variable and insufficient counseling practices exist across pharmacies, highlighting the need for standardization and quality improvement strategies. The aim of this project was to develop and test an ECP dispensing protocol for pharmacists.
