A good scientific poster should capture the interest and imagination of the viewer and the overall aim should be to make the target audience want to know more about the topic. A well prepared poster will speak for itself and significantly aid the presenter in sharing the findings of their work. It can often lead to new and exciting collaborative opportunities.

We provide comprehensive insights into the peer review process and guide potential reviewers through the steps of reviewing scientific manuscripts. We discuss essential aspects such as the reviewer's responsibility in responding to invitations and maintaining confidentiality throughout the process, the criteria for accepting or rejecting papers, and efficient review of resubmissions. We emphasize the importance of prioritizing the review responsibility within other commitments, communication using professional and courteous language, and adherence to deadlines.

In this education paper, we want to give some advice to aid in successful scientific grant writing. Besides defining an important research hypothesis and how to support this hypothesis, there are also technical aspects in grant writing that need to be fulfilled. Therefore, read carefully the requirements before starting to write the proposal.

There are several pitfalls in the publication process that researchers can fall victim to, and these can occur knowingly or unknowingly. Although some of these errors may have occurred in good faith, disregard of publication governance is a dangerous practice and could bring authors and their co-authors into disrepute. We highlight some of these potential pitfalls, acquaint the reader with some rules that need to be adhered to in research and publishing, and help the reader learn how to avoid tripping-up on the road to publication.

Presenting a paper to a small or large audience should match both the knowledge level of your audience and the title and abstract you submitted to the conference. Your slides should give context to your work. Simpler slides and talks are easier to follow than a highly complex presentation.

Getting your scientific paper published can be a difficult process. The quality of the paper relates to the quality of the design of the study, the questions asked, and defining an excellent primary endpoint that is easy to understand, and data obtained from a sufficiently large population. Before submitting your paper, go over all requirements like ethical approval, registration in public databases, and conflict of interest declarations.

Background: The trajectory from healthy to critical illness is influenced by numerous factors, including metabolism, which differs substantially between males and females. Whole body protein breakdown is substantially increased in critically ill patients, but it remains unclear whether there are sex differences that could explain the different health outcomes. Hence, we performed a secondary analysis of a study, where we used a novel pulse isotope method in critically ill and matched healthy males and females.

Background & Aims: Postabsorptive whole body protein kinetics are related to age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and habitual protein intake level. It is unclear how protein synthesis, breakdown, and postabsorptive protein balance rates are affected in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)) and whether these relate to disease severity, lifestyle characteristics and poor daily functioning.
Methods: We studied 91 COPD (GOLD 1-4) and 56 age matched control subjects without COPD or other chronic or acute health disease/condition in the postabsorptive state and measured body composition by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry, and disease severity and comorbidities by medical screening, blood analysis and questionnaires.

This opinion paper presents a short review of the potential impact of protein on muscle anabolism in cancer, which is associated with better patient outcomes. Protein source is a topic of interest for patients and clinicians, partly due to recent emphasis on the supposed non-beneficial effect of proteins; therefore, misconceptions involving animal-based (e.g.

Background: The amount of the macronutrients protein and carbohydrate (CHO) in a mixed meal is known to affect each other's digestion, absorption, and subsequent metabolism. While the effect of the amount of dietary protein and fat on the glycemic response is well studied, the ability of postprandial plasma amino acid patterns to predict the meal composition is unknown.
Objective: To study the postprandial plasma amino acid patterns in relation to the protein, CHO, and fat content of different mixed meals and to investigate if these patterns can predict the macronutrient meal composition.

Amino acid (AA) metabolism is severely disturbed in critically ill ICU patients. To be able to make a more scientifically based decision on the type of protein or AA nutrition to deliver in ICU patients, comprehensive AA phenotyping with measurements of plasma concentrations and whole body production (WBP) is needed. Therefore, we studied ICU patients and matched control subjects using a novel pulse isotope method to obtain in-depth metabolic analysis.

Background: Hospitalized, malnourished older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have an elevated risk of readmission and mortality.
Objective: Post-hoc, sub-group analysis from the NOURISH study cohort examined the effect of a high-protein oral nutritional supplement (ONS) containing HMB (HP-HMB) in malnourished, hospitalized older adults with COPD and to identify predictors of outcomes.
Methods: The NOURISH study (n = 652) was a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial.

Preserving muscle is not only crucial for maintaining proper physical movement, but also for its many metabolic and homeostatic roles. Low muscle mass has been shown to adversely affect health outcomes in a variety of disease states (eg, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease) and leads to an increased risk for readmission and mortality in hospitalized patients. Low muscle mass is now included in the most recent diagnostic criteria for malnutrition.

The aging process is associated with gradual and progressive loss of muscle mass along with lowered strength and physical endurance. This condition, sarcopenia, has been widely observed with aging in sedentary adults. Regular aerobic and resistance exercise programs have been shown to counteract most aspects of sarcopenia.
