Vascular calcification (VC) is a common pathological process of cardiovascular disease that occurs in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the molecular basis of VC progression remains unknown. A GEO dataset (GSE146638) was analyzed to show that microbodies and IL-1β may play important roles in the pathophysiology of VC.

Objective: This study aimed to determine whether autoinducer-2 (AI-2), a crucial bacterial metabolite and quorum sensing molecule, is involved in lung immunity through the gut-lung axis.
Methods: The level of AI-2 and the gut microbiome composition were analysed in the stools from pneumonic patients and the mouse model of acute lung injury. The effect of AI-2 on lung inflammation was further investigated in the mouse model.

Background And Objective: Lateral pelvic lymph node (LPLN) metastasis is one of the prominent reasons for local recurrence (LR) in patients with rectal cancer (RC). The evaluation criteria of lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) for patients in eastern (mainly in Japan) and western countries have been controversial. The aim of this study was to analyse the risk factors for LPLN metastasis in order to guide surgical methods.

Fleas represent a group of paramount medical significance, subsisting on blood and acting as vectors for an array of naturally occurring diseases. These pathogens constitute essential elements within the plague biome, exerting deleterious effects on both human and livestock health. In this study, we successfully assembled and sequenced the whole mitochondrial genome of and using long-range PCR and next-generation sequencing technologies.

Background: An essential fact underlying the severity of () infection is the bicomponent leukocidins released by the pathogen to target and lyse host phagocytes through specific binding cell membrane receptors. However, little is known about the impact of post-transcriptional modification of receptors on the leukocidin binding.
Method: In this study, we used small interfering RNA library (Horizon/Dharmacon) to screen potential genes that affect leukocidin binding on receptors.

Background: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) with differential expression characteristics have been found to be closely related to the tumorigenesis and development of gastric cancer (GC), but their specific mechanisms and roles still need to be further elucidated.
Aim: To investigate the expression of LINC01268 in GC and its mechanism of affecting GC progression.
Methods: Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the expression of LINC01268 in GC tissues, cell lines and plasma.

Background: Gastroscopy is one of the most commonly used diagnostic modalities for upper gastrointestinal disorders. Remazolam besylate, a new type of ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine drug, has been less studied in gastroscopy. In this study, we studied the efficacy and safety of remazolam combined with propofol for painless gastroscopy.

The management of cirrhotic patient with encephalopathy and acute variceal bleeding (AVB) remains a clinical challenge with a high mortality. Early endoscopic therapies are frequently applied in patients with AVB. However, the application of general anesthesia in endoscopic surgery for patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is pretty challenging.

Our prior study has suggested that percutaneous superselective adrenal arterial embolization (SAAE) with ethanol reduces blood pressure in patients with primary aldosteronism. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of SAAE with mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) in treating patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism. In this prospective, randomized, controlled trial, we randomly assigned patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism in a 1:1 ratio to undergo SAAE (n = 29) or receive MRA (n = 30) treatment.

Background: Depression is a severe mental illness that endangers human health. Depressed individuals are prone to sleep less and to the loss of appetite for food; their thinking and cognition processes, as well as mood, may even be affected. Danzhi Xiaoyao San (DXS), documented in the Internal Medicine Summary, has been used for hundreds of years in China and is widely applied traditionally to treat liver qi stagnation, liver and spleen blood deficiency, menstrual disorders, and spontaneous and night sweating.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of doxofylline as an adjuvant in reducing severe exacerbation for different clinical subtypes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Methods: The clinical trial was an open-label non-randomized clinical trial that enrolled patients with COPD. The patients were divided into two groups (doxofylline group[DG] and non-doxofylline group[NDG]) according to whether the adjuvant was used.

Purpose: Chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), a vital member of the CC chemokine family, plays diverse roles in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and prognosis in various human tumors. However, no pan-cancer analysis has been conducted to illustrate its distinctive effects on clinical prognosis via underlying mechanisms and biological characteristics.
Methods: Herein, we exploited the existed public bioinformatics database, primarily TCGA database and GTEx data, to comprehensively analyze the value of CCL5 involved in patient prognosis.
Although inhibition of neprilysin (NEP) might be a therapeutic strategy with the potential to improve the outcome of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the versatile function of NEP with its mechanism remains obscure in kidney fibrosis. In the study, we found that NEP was abnormally increased in tubular epithelial cells of CKD patients, as well as unilateral ureteral obstruction and adenine diet-induced mice. Treatment with a United States Food and Drug Administration-approved NEP inhibitor Sacubitrilat (LBQ657) could alleviate ferroptosis, tubular injury, and delay the progression of kidney fibrosis in experimental mice.

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, aneurysm, thrombosis, and hypertension, are a great economic burden and threat to human health and are the major cause of death worldwide. Recently, researchers have begun to appreciate the role of microbial ecosystems within the human body in contributing to metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that the gut microbiota is closely associated with the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases.

Fleas are one of the most common ectoparasites in warm-blooded mammals and an important vector of zoonotic diseases with serious medical implications. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of and for the first time using high-throughput sequencing and constructed phylogenetic relationships. We obtained double-stranded circular molecules of lengths 15,875 and 15,785 bp, respectively, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and two control regions.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterised by hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. The role of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA)-regulated pyroptosis in NAFLD development remains largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether NAFLD development is controlled by lncRNA growth-arrest specific transcript 5 (GAS5)/miR-28a-5p/membrane associated ring-CH-type finger 7 (MARCH7)-mediated pyroptosis using in vivo and in vitro models.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer and shows high global incidence and mortality rates. The liver is an immune-tolerated organ with a specific immune microenvironment that causes traditional therapeutic approaches to HCC, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and molecular targeted therapy, to have limited efficacy. The dramatic advances in immuno-oncology in the past few decades have modified the paradigm of cancer therapy, ushering in the era of immunotherapy.

Berberine (BBR) is an effective drug against liver fibrosis (LF). Autophagy is involved in the pathogenesis of LF; however, the mechanism linking BBR to autophagy in LF remains unresolved. To explore the underlying mechanism, we assessed the effects of BBR on autophagy and apoptosis of activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in vitro and in a murine model of fibrosis.
