Background: Social connectedness decreases human mortality, improves cancer survival, cardiovascular health, and body mass, results in better-controlled glucose levels, and strengthens mental health. However, few public health studies have leveraged large social media data sets to classify user network structure and geographic reach rather than the sole use of social media platforms.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the association between population-level digital social connectedness and reach and depression in the population across geographies of the United States.

Perspectives of Patients About Immediate Access to Test Results Through an Online Patient Portal.

Importance: The 21st Century Cures Act Final Rule mandates the immediate electronic availability of test results to patients, likely empowering them to better manage their health. Concerns remain about unintended effects of releasing abnormal test results to patients.

Objective: To assess patient and caregiver attitudes and preferences related to receiving immediately released test results through an online patient portal.

Validation of a predictive model for hospital-acquired acute kidney injury with emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants.

We previously developed and validated a model to predict acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and found that the variables with the highest importance included a history of chronic kidney disease and markers of inflammation. Here, we assessed model performance during periods when COVID-19 cases were attributable almost exclusively to individual variants. Electronic Health Record data were obtained from patients admitted to 19 hospitals.

Background: An undiagnosed HIV infection remains a public health challenge. In the digital era, social media and digital health communication have been widely used to accelerate research, improve consumer health, and facilitate public health interventions including HIV prevention.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate and compare the projected cost and efficacy of different simulated Facebook (FB) advertisement (ad) approaches targeting at-risk populations for HIV based on new HIV diagnosis rates by age group and geographic region in the United States.

Recommendations of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) on Education in Biomedical and Health Informatics: Second Revision.

Background: The purpose of educational recommendations is to assist in establishing courses and programs in a discipline, to further develop existing educational activities in the various nations, and to support international initiatives for collaboration and sharing of courseware. The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) has published two versions of its international recommendations in biomedical and health informatics (BMHI) education, initially in 2000 and revised in 2010. Given the recent changes to the science, technology, the needs of the healthcare systems, and the workforce of BMHI, a revision of the recommendations is necessary.

Use of virtual care by infectious disease specialists in Canada: A national survey.

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the type and extent of virtual care use among infectious disease specialists in Canada, with a focus on the clinical factors that influence the decision to provide virtual versus in-person care.

Methods: Infectious disease physicians practicing in Canada were invited to complete a survey regarding their experiences with virtual care. The survey included 14 vignettes depicting new outpatient and post-hospital-discharge referrals.

Importance: Long-term sequelae after symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection may impact well-being, yet existing data primarily focus on discrete symptoms and/or health care use.

Objective: To compare patient-reported outcomes of physical, mental, and social well-being among adults with symptomatic illness who received a positive vs negative test result for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study was a planned interim analysis of an ongoing multicenter prospective longitudinal registry study (the Innovative Support for Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infections Registry [INSPIRE]).

The Texas Health Resources Clinical Scholars Program: Learning healthcare system workforce development through embedded translational research.

Introduction: Texas Health Resources (THR), a large, nonprofit health care system based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, has collaborated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) to develop and operate a unique, integrated approach for Learning Health System (LHS) workforce development. This training model centers on academic health system faculty members conducting later-stage translational research within a partnering regional care delivery organization.

Methods: The THR Clinical Scholars Program engages early career UTSW faculty members to conduct studies that are likely to have an impact on care delivery at the health system level.

Social media: A new tool for outbreak surveillance.

Social media platforms allow users to share news, ideas, thoughts, and opinions on a global scale. Data processing methods allow researchers to automate the collection and interpretation of social media posts for efficient and valuable disease surveillance. Data derived from social media and internet search trends have been used successfully for monitoring and forecasting disease outbreaks such as Zika, Dengue, MERS, and Ebola viruses.

Real-Time Patient Portal Use Among Emergency Department Patients: An Open Results Study.

Objectives: We characterized real-time patient portal test result viewing among emergency department (ED) patients and described patient characteristics overall and among those not enrolled in the portal at ED arrival.

Methods: Our observational study at an academic ED used portal log data to trend the proportion of adult patients who viewed results during their visit from May 04, 2021 to April 04, 2022. Correlation was assessed visually and with Kendall's τ.

Decision Support to Improve Critical Care Services Documentation in an Academic Emergency Department.

Objectives: Critical care services (CCS) documentation affects billing, operations, and research. No studies exist on documentation decision support (DDS) for CCS in the emergency department (ED). We describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a DDS tool built to improve CCS documentation at an academic ED.

Do electronic health record systems "dumb down" clinicians?

A panel sponsored by the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) at the 2021 AMIA Symposium addressed the provocative question: "Are Electronic Health Records dumbing down clinicians?" After reviewing electronic health record (EHR) development and evolution, the panel discussed how EHR use can impair care delivery. Both suboptimal functionality during EHR use and longer-term effects outside of EHR use can reduce clinicians' efficiencies, reasoning abilities, and knowledge. Panel members explored potential solutions to problems discussed.

Reduced Procedure Time and Variability with Active Esophageal Cooling During Radiofrequency Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation.

Various methods are utilized during radiofrequency (RF) pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) to protect the esophagus from inadvertent thermal injury. Active esophageal cooling is increasingly being used over traditional luminal esophageal temperature (LET) monitoring, and each approach may influence procedure times and the variability around those times. The objective of this study is to measure the effects on procedure time and variability in procedure time of two different esophageal protection strategies utilizing advanced informatics techniques to facilitate data extraction.

Implementation of Outpatient Infectious Diseases E-Consults at a Safety Net Healthcare System.

Background: Safety net healthcare systems have high patient volumes and significant demands for specialty care including infectious diseases (ID) consultations. Electronic ID consults (E-consults) can lessen this burden by providing an alternative to face-to-face ID referrals and decreasing financial, time, and travel constraints on patients. This system could increase access to ID care for patients in limited-resource settings.

Simulating Facebook Advertisements to Establish Cost per New HIV Diagnosis Using Routine and Targeted Models in a Local Population.

Background: Undiagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a public health challenge. We explore Facebook (FB) advertisement (Ads) cost per new HIV diagnosis using non-targeted Ads, a routine testing model against targeted Ads, and a focused testing model in Texas.

Methods: On 14 October 2021, we created (without launching) Texas-based, USD 10 targeted (using criteria matching HIV populations at risk) and non-targeted FB Ads for 10 days.

The Politicization of Ivermectin Tweets During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: We explore the ivermectin discourse and sentiment in the United States with a special focus on political leaning through the social media blogging site Twitter.

Methods: We used sentiment analysis and topic modeling to geospatially explore ivermectin Twitter discourse in the United States and compared it to the political leaning of a state based on the 2020 presidential election.

Results: All modeled topics were associated with a negative sentiment.

Analyzing COVID-19 disinformation on Twitter using the hashtags #scamdemic and #plandemic: Retrospective study.

Introduction: The use of social media during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an "infodemic" of mis- and disinformation with potentially grave consequences. To explore means of counteracting disinformation, we analyzed tweets containing the hashtags #Scamdemic and #Plandemic.

Methods: Using a Twitter scraping tool called twint, we collected 419,269 English-language tweets that contained "#Scamdemic" or "#Plandemic" posted in 2020.

Developing a Pediatric EHR Testing & Certification Program in the USA: Initial Phase.

In 2016, the 21st Century Cures Act included ONC's 10 functionality recommendations for voluntary testing and certification of pediatric EHRs. Since 2019, Drummond has been developing a new pediatric EHR testing and certification program with pediatric and industry experts. The testing criteria are based upon AAP's 47 requirements that include ONC's 10 recommendations.
