Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the outcomes for patients who had surgery for Stanford type A aortic dissection (TAAD) and spent time in the intensive care unit (ICU), analyzing data from 3,538 patients.
  • Average ICU stays were around 9.9 days, with associated costs averaging €24,086, and observed in-hospital mortality was 14.8%, while five-year mortality was 30.5%.
  • The analysis found that longer ICU stays (>5 days) linked to better survival rates, with lower in-hospital mortality (8.9% vs. 17.4%) and lower five-year mortality (28.2% vs. 30.7%) when compared to shorter stays (2-

Introduction: Rituximab (RTX) is considered a potential therapeutic option for relapsing-remitting (RRMS) and progressive forms (PMS) of multiple sclerosis (MS). The main objective of this work was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of rituximab in MS.

Patients And Methods: Observational multicenter study of clinical and radiological effectiveness and safety of rituximab in RRMS and PMS.

Background & Aims: Hepatic steatosis is a hallmark of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a common comorbidity in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The pathogenesis of NAFLD is complex and involves the crosstalk between the liver and the white adipose tissue (WAT). Vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGF-B) has been shown to control tissue lipid accumulation by regulating the transport properties of the vasculature.

Modelling and assessing one- and two-drug dose titrations.

In health-care, there is a need to quantify medical errors. Among these errors, we observe wrong dose prescriptions. Drug dose titration (DT) is the process by which dosage is progressively adjusted to the patient till a steady dose is reached.

Article Synopsis
  • Ultrasonography is effective for detecting intraneural injections, but its reliability in showing the accurate spread location has not been thoroughly assessed.
  • A scoping review evaluated studies involving adult, cadaver, and animal models, focusing on the correlation between sonographic findings and actual injectate spread through histology or other methods.
  • The review found that while ultrasounds can reliably indicate injection sites, actual deposits within nerve fascicles occurred infrequently and ultrasound parameters currently in use do not reliably predict these deposits.

Differences between sexes concerning COVID-19-related pneumonia.

Panminerva Med

December 2022

Department of Pulmonology Rehabilitation, IRCCS Don Gnocchi Foundation, Milan, Italy -

Background: Pneumonia is both the most common type of lower respiratory tract infection and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 raised an extremely serious concern, because its most frequent clinical presentation was pneumonia. Features such as sex play an active role in the incidence and outcomes of pneumonia.

Background: In endometrial cancer (EC), sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping has emerged as an alternative to systematic lymphadenectomy. Little is known about factors that might influence SLN preoperative detection. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical and technical variables that may influence on the success of SLN detection in preoperative lymphatic mapping in patients with intermediate and high-risk EC when performing transvaginal ultrasound-guided myometrial injection of radiotracer (TUMIR).

Background: Elevated preoperative lactate levels have been reported in patients admitted for resection of brain tumors. As histologic type and tumor grade have also been linked to lactate concentration, we hypothesized that preoperative lactate concentration in patients with brain tumors may be associated with tumor proliferation. We describe the relationship between preoperative plasma lactate levels, and the cell proliferation marker Ki-67 in brain tumor surgery.

Committed to be fit. The value of preoperative care in the perioperative medicine era.

Minerva Anestesiol

May 2018

Navarra Blood and Tissue Bank of Pamplona, Navarra Health Service, Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud (IACS), Zaragoza, Spain.

In the era of perioperative medicine, important advances have been made in the perioperative care of patients, usually within those known as enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols. These have led to a decrease in postoperative complications and the duration of hospital stays; however, there is still a lack of preoperative care, which could make perioperative medicine more prominent. Elderly patients, malnourished, anemic and ones with a low physical function before surgery are likely to have sub-optimal recovery from surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • * A targeted-capture next-generation sequencing approach was developed to quickly identify important genetic features, including IGH translocations and mutations in specific genes related to myeloma.
  • * Testing on 48 newly diagnosed patients showed this method successfully identified most IGH translocations and mutations, making it a more efficient and cost-effective option for diagnosing and characterizing multiple myeloma.

Purpose: Although many studies have confirmed the synergic effects of combining chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (RT), clinical data evaluating safety and efficacy of erlotinib in combination with RT in locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are limited. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy of the concurrent addition of erlotinib to the standard three-dimensional conformal thoracic RT in patients with unresectable or locally advanced NSCLC who are not candidates for receiving standard CT.

Patients And Methods: Feasibility and tolerability, assessed by evaluating adverse events (AEs), and effectiveness, by calculating progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and objective response rate (ORR), were analyzed in 30 patients receiving RT alone and 60 receiving RT and erlotinib.

Biochemical and histochemical adaptation to sprint training in young athletes.

Acta Physiol Scand

November 1990

Muscle Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Clinical Hospital of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Spain.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of 8 months of a specific and controlled sprint training programme on three groups of young athletes (two groups of males and one of females). Biopsies of vastus lateralis were taken before and after the period of training. The type percentage and diameter of the fibres, as well as the glycogen content and the activities of the enzymes of glycogen metabolism (glycogen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase), glycolysis (phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase), oxidative metabolism (succinate dehydrogenase) and creatine kinase and aminotransferases were studied.

The combination aztreonam + cefotaxime (AZ + CE) was compared to amikacin + cefotaxime (AM + CE) in the treatment of nosocomial pneumonia acquired at the intensive-care unit. This study included a total of 33 patients fulfilling criteria for nosocomial pneumonia. 16 of them were randomly allocated to the AZ + CE group and 17 to the AM + CE group.
