Predictive factors of preoperative sentinel lymph node detection in intermediate and high-risk endometrial cancer.

Background: In endometrial cancer (EC), sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping has emerged as an alternative to systematic lymphadenectomy. Little is known about factors that might influence SLN preoperative detection. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical and technical variables that may influence on the success of SLN detection in preoperative lymphatic mapping in patients with intermediate and high-risk EC when performing transvaginal ultrasound-guided myometrial injection of radiotracer (TUMIR).

Association between preoperative serum lactate concentrate with tumor cell proliferative index in primary brain tumor.

Background: Elevated preoperative lactate levels have been reported in patients admitted for resection of brain tumors. As histologic type and tumor grade have also been linked to lactate concentration, we hypothesized that preoperative lactate concentration in patients with brain tumors may be associated with tumor proliferation. We describe the relationship between preoperative plasma lactate levels, and the cell proliferation marker Ki-67 in brain tumor surgery.

In the era of perioperative medicine, important advances have been made in the perioperative care of patients, usually within those known as enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols. These have led to a decrease in postoperative complications and the duration of hospital stays; however, there is still a lack of preoperative care, which could make perioperative medicine more prominent. Elderly patients, malnourished, anemic and ones with a low physical function before surgery are likely to have sub-optimal recovery from surgery.

Feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy of the concurrent addition of erlotinib to thoracic radiotherapy in locally advanced unresectable non-small-cell lung cancer: a Phase II trial.

Purpose: Although many studies have confirmed the synergic effects of combining chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (RT), clinical data evaluating safety and efficacy of erlotinib in combination with RT in locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are limited. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy of the concurrent addition of erlotinib to the standard three-dimensional conformal thoracic RT in patients with unresectable or locally advanced NSCLC who are not candidates for receiving standard CT.

Patients And Methods: Feasibility and tolerability, assessed by evaluating adverse events (AEs), and effectiveness, by calculating progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and objective response rate (ORR), were analyzed in 30 patients receiving RT alone and 60 receiving RT and erlotinib.

Biochemical and histochemical adaptation to sprint training in young athletes.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of 8 months of a specific and controlled sprint training programme on three groups of young athletes (two groups of males and one of females). Biopsies of vastus lateralis were taken before and after the period of training. The type percentage and diameter of the fibres, as well as the glycogen content and the activities of the enzymes of glycogen metabolism (glycogen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase), glycolysis (phosphofructokinase, pyruvate kinase, aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase), oxidative metabolism (succinate dehydrogenase) and creatine kinase and aminotransferases were studied.

Therapeutic efficacy of the combination of aztreonam with cefotaxime in the treatment of severe nosocomial pneumonia. Comparative study against amikacin combined with cefotaxime.

The combination aztreonam + cefotaxime (AZ + CE) was compared to amikacin + cefotaxime (AM + CE) in the treatment of nosocomial pneumonia acquired at the intensive-care unit. This study included a total of 33 patients fulfilling criteria for nosocomial pneumonia. 16 of them were randomly allocated to the AZ + CE group and 17 to the AM + CE group.
