Article Synopsis
  • Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common type of eye cancer in adults, with a consistent rate of occurrence in Europe and the U.S., but has distinct features that set it apart from other melanoma types, especially its tendency to spread to the liver.
  • Despite advances in treating the initial tumor, about half of UM patients will eventually develop metastases, often leading to a dismal prognosis with median survival rates ranging from 6 to 12 months, and no standard systemic treatment is currently established for those with liver metastases.
  • There is a need for enhanced understanding of UM's biology and metastasis mechanisms, along with the establishment of treatment guidelines, to improve patient outcomes and develop personalized therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a nonthermal method that shows potential safety benefits over traditional radiofrequency ablation, particularly when using a specialized catheter and mapping system in this study.
  • The research involved 16 swine to test the effectiveness of PFA in creating reliable ablation lines and evaluating lesion durability after 30 days, as well as comparing the impacts on esophageal and nerve tissue against standard radiofrequency methods.
  • Results indicated that PFA successfully created ablation lines in all subjects and preserved tissue integrity, showing minimal adverse effects on the esophagus and phrenic nerve compared to conventional radiofrequency ablation, which caused significant damage.

Pulsed field ablation: a promise that came true.

Curr Opin Cardiol

January 2021

Department of Cardiology, University Clinical Hospital Split, Split, Croatia.

Purpose Of Review: Pulsed field ablation is a nonthermal ablative modality that uses short living, strong electrical field created around catheter to create microscopic pores in cell membranes (electroporation). When adequately dosed/configured it shows a preference for myocardial tissue necrosis. Thus, it holds a promise to become a 'perfect' energy source for cardiac ablation to treat arrhythmias.
