March 2024

Sciencefiles, Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Stroke is an acute life-threatening condition; its outcome is determined by the degree of damage to brain tissue, the quality and speed of medical care in the first minutes and hours after its occurrence. The main mechanism of brain tissue damage during both ischemia and reperfusion is oxidative stress. The review covers adverse influence oxidative stress at the cerebral ischemia and reperfusion periodes of ischemic stroke.

Fluctuating asymmetry of human morphometric features as a marker of developmental instability caused by adverse environmental conditions.

Folia Morphol (Warsz)

March 2024

Laboratory of Anthropology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland.

Background: This article is an attempt to apply fluctuating asymmetry as amorphometric method of studying changes in specific structures of the right and the left side of the body to determine variables which may affect morphogenesis and, consequently, human morphology in adulthood. The main aim of this study was to use the fluctuating asymmetry level as an indicator of adverse living conditions in childhood by determining the impact of environmental components (socio-economic factors and air pollution) on the level of body asymmetry in young women and men.

Materials And Methods: Data were collected from 877 students from various Polish universities, including 483 women and 394 men.

The literature review presents approaches to the management of patients with vestibular disorders. The principles of organization of vestibular rehabilitation in peripheral vestibular hypofunction, indications for appointment, factors influencing its implementation, technique, methods of evaluating effectiveness are considered in detail. Attention is drawn to the fact that the selection of exercises and the duration of vestibular rehabilitation is carried out individually and depends on many factors, including the nature of vestibular deficiency and the specific characteristics of the patient.

Carotid endarterectomy is the main way to combat atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries, which disrupts cerebral circulation. The generally accepted marker of atherogenesis risk are hemodynamic indices associated with near-wall shear stress. The purpose of the work is to conduct a comparative analysis of hemodynamic indices in various carotid bifurcation models.

Background: Patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) in countries with limited resources have, to date, been poorly represented in registries.

Objective: This work assesses the epidemiology, diagnosis, hemodynamic and functional parameters, and treatment of CTEPH in Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

Methods: A prospective, cohort, phase IV, observational registry with 3-year follow-up (n = 212) in patients aged ≥ 18 years diagnosed with CTEPH was created.

Mechanical Properties of V-O-N Coatings Synthesized by Cathodic Arc Evaporation.

Materials (Basel)

January 2024

Centre for Biological Treatment, Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, 70-204 Szczecin, Poland.

The V-O-N coating set was produced at different relative oxygen concentrations of O(x) = O/(N +O) using cathodic arc evaporation. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of oxygen on coating properties. The coatings' composition and structural properties (X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)) and mechanical properties-hardness, adhesion, and wear resistance (nano-indenter, scratch tester, ball-on-disc tester)-were extensively investigated.

Background: We conducted a multicenter, prospective, observational study to describe the incidence of orthostatic hypotension (OH) and orthostatic hypertension (OHtn) and its association with symptoms at standing and outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF).

Methods And Results: 321 active standing tests were performed in 87 inpatients during admission, and 316 tests were performed in 208 outpatients during follow-up. Blood pressure (BP) was measured by an automatic device 4 times in the supine position and at 1, 3 and 5 minutes of standing.

Unlabelled: Actuality. The development of renal colic in pregnant women is one of the most common reasons for visiting a hospital that is not associated with obstetric pathology. Given the pharmacological and diagnostic limitations during gestation, the problem of expanding the renal cavitary system in pregnant women, as well as the choice of treatment tactics, remains a difficult clinical task.

Risk stratification of hospital mortality in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction on the electrocardiogram is an important part of the specialized medical care provision. The systematic review presents scientific literature data characterizing the predictive value of both classical prognostic scales (GRACE, CADDILLAC, TIMI risk score for STEMI, RECORD, etc.) and new risk measurement tools developed on the basis of modern machine learning techniques.

Osteoporosis is a multifactorial and polygenic disease caused by an imbalance between osteoclastogenesis and osteoblastogenesis, leading to a decrease in bone mineral density and the occurrence of disorders in the microarchitecture and metabolism of bone tissue. In postmenopausal women, there is a significant decrease in the production of estrogens, which play a key role in maintaining proper bone mineral density. Estrogens have an inhibitory effect on the development and activity of osteoclasts by reducing the synthesis of pro-resorption cytokines and stimulating the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG).

Involvement of supra-aortic vessels into acute DeBakey type I aortic dissection is a significant predictor of adverse postoperative neurological outcomes and mortality. The choice of surgical tactics remains open in such patients. We present total replacement of both common carotid arteries and proximal part of the right subclavian artery with reconstruction of ascending aorta and aortic arch for acute DeBakey type I dissection.

Introduction: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear etiology. Systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation may play a role in the pathogenesis of ADHD. Morphology-derived parameters such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), have been proposed as peripheral biomarkers of the immune-inflammatory process in various diseases.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the biggest problems in gynecological oncology and is one of the most lethal cancers in women worldwide. Most patients with OC are diagnosed at an advanced stage; therefore, there is an urgent need to find new biomarkers for this disease. Gene expression profiling is proving to be a very effective tool for exploring new molecular markers for OC patients, although the relationship between such markers and patient survival and clinical outcomes is still elusive.

The management of patients with hemorrhagic stroke is an important problem in modern neurology and neurosurgery. The proportion of hemorrhagic stroke is only 15% of all cases of acute cerebrovascular accident, but mortality reaches 50% (and with intraventricular hemorrhages up to 80%), and disability is over 75%. Minimally invasive methods are being developed to reduce intraoperative damage to brain and improve the prognosis for the patient.
