SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2) is a novel virus that has been identified as a causal agent of COVID-19,  an emergent infectious disease which brought about a new pandemic in the twenty-first century. The immune responses and clinical features of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 have not yet been fully described. Thus, in this study, we compare the seroprevalence and define the correlation between symptoms and serological results in the first COVID-19 cluster in the city of Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Coronary artery disease as a consequence of atherosclerosis is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients. Homocysteine (HCY), as one of the risk factors, and uric acid (UA) as the most common antioxidant in serum have their roles in the processes of inflammation and atherogenesis, which underlie the pathogenesis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The effect of HCY in cardiovascular disease is thought to be manifested primarily through oxidative damage, implying a potential correlation between the HCY level and antioxidant status.

Objective: We aimed to confirm whether serum on admission homocysteine level (HCY) and red cell distribution width (RDW) value are independent risk factors for MACE incidence in patients with STEMI myocardial infarction treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), as well as the possibility of their joint assessment in order to enhance the risk stratification for major adverse cardiac events (MACE).

Patients And Methods: A total of 80 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were included in the study and tested for blood HCY and RDW values. Patients were followed up for six months after discharge and evaluated for MACE occurrence.

Branchial cleft anomalies: hybrid "Branchial Inclusion" theory.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

July 2021

Department of Infectious Diseases, General Hospital Zadar, Bože Peričića 5, 23 000, Zadar, Croatia.

Article Synopsis
  • Branchial cleft anomalies (BCAs) are developmental malformations in the head and neck that have unclear causes; this study aimed to test various theories about their development using a sample of 48 cases.
  • The analysis involved 46 patients who underwent surgical removal of 48 BCAs, with findings indicating that most cases were branchial cleft cysts and were primarily located near the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  • The study concluded that no existing theories fully account for the origins of BCAs in their sample, suggesting that the hybrid "branchial inclusion" theory may offer the best explanation for their histogenesis.
