Antimicrobial Resistance in Rapidly Growing Nontuberculous Mycobacteria among Domestic and Wild Animals Emphasizing the Zoonotic Potential.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens capable of causing infections in humans and animals. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential role of domestic and wild animals as a reservoir of multiple resistant, rapidly growing NTM strains representing a potential zoonotic threat to humans. A total of 87 animal isolates belonging to 11 rapidly growing species (visible colonies appear within three to seven days) were genotyped and tested for susceptibility to the 15 most commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of such infections in a human clinic.

Comprehensive genomic profiling of a metastatic small cell lung carcinoma with a complete and long-term response to atezolizumab: A case report.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with a poor outcome. We present the case of a 57-year-old male patient with extensive-stage (ES-SCLC) treated with chemotherapy and atezolizumab. A complete response was achieved with a long remission of ∼three years.

Background: Due to excessive concerns and focus on weight control and body shape, adolescents often resort to inappropriate behaviours and attitudes towards eating, resulting in physical and psychological issues. This study aimed to assess possible relationships and predictor variables between disordered eating and age, BMI, body appreciation, self-esteem, quality of family interactions, psychosocial health and childhood trauma experience in adolescents of both sexes in the city of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on a suitable sample of 724 high-school students aged 14-19 years.

Effects of Zofenopril on Arterial Stiffness in Hypertension Patients.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) reduce arterial stiffness beyond their antihypertensive effect. Studies showed that sulfhydryl ACEIs have the antioxidative potential to improve endothelial function, which might have a clinical effect on arterial distensibility. However, there are no studies that directly compare the effects of sulfhydryl (zofenopril) and non-sulfhydryl ACEIs (enalapril) on arterial stiffness.

Association of MTHFR polymorphism, folic acid and vitamin B12 with serum homocysteine levels in pregnant women.

Homocysteine is known to be associated with adverse vascular and metabolic effects, as well as pregnancy complications. Its serum levels are influenced by the function of the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and the dietary intake of folic acid, vitamin B12, and methionine. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association of genetic polymorphisms of the MTHFR gene with vitamin status in pregnant women during mandatory folic acid supplementation.

Risk of zoonoses involving slow-growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria: Survey of antimicrobial resistance among strains from domestic and wild animals.

Objectives: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are opportunistic pathogens that cause disease mainly in immunocompromised hosts. The present study assessed the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among such mycobacteria from domestic and wild animals in Croatia sampled during several years within a national surveillance program.

Methods: A total of 44 isolates belonging to nine slow-growing species were genotyped and analyzed for susceptibility to 13 antimicrobials often used to treat non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections in humans.

The present study aimed to determine how much the duration of diabetes mellitus (DM) affect the reparative ability of the body, immune response and the development of DM complications. Interleukin 1-β (IL-1β) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) were monitored as specific indicators of inflammatory reaction and C-reactive protein (CRP), leukocyte count (WBC) and sedimentation rate (ESR) as general markers of inflammatory reaction.

Small Cell Lung Carcinoma: Current Diagnosis, Biomarkers, and Treatment Options with Future Perspectives.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive malignancy characterized by rapid proliferation, early dissemination, acquired therapy resistance, and poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of SCLC is crucial since most patients present with advanced/metastatic disease, limiting the potential for curative treatment. While SCLC exhibits initial responsiveness to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, treatment resistance commonly emerges, leading to a five-year overall survival rate of up to 10%.

Differences in Outcomes Between Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2)-Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients in Upper Middle-Income versus High-Income Countries: A Retrospective Study from 4 Oncology Centers.

BACKGROUND Therapeutic options for human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2)-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC) are developing rapidly. This study aimed to determine the differences in the survival outcomes of patients with HER2-positive mBC in relation to access to anti-HER therapy at 3 oncology centers in upper-middle-income countries (UMICs) and 1 oncology center in a high-income country (HIC). MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively identified 42 patients from Croatia (HIC), 71 patients from Serbia (UMIC), and 57 from Bosnia and Herzegovina (UMIC) diagnosed with HER2-positive mBC who were treated between January 2015 and December 2020.

Co-administration of pazopanib and enteral nutrition with omega-3 fatty acids as a safety issue in a patient treated for metastatic clear cell renal cancer: A case report.

Pazopanib is an oral multitargeting tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs), approved as the first-line treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and soft tissue sarcoma (STS) at a fixed dose of 800 mg daily taken fasted. Potential drug-meal interactions and adverse events (AEs) may lack recognition and the related data in literature. We report one case of stomatitis/oral mucositis associated with pazopanib administrated with an oral nutritional supplement enriched with omega-3 fatty acids.

Cerebral infarction as initial manifestation of meningovascular neurosyphilis in an immunocompetent patient - A case report with long term follow-up.

To present a 29-year-old immunocompetent patient with neurosyphilitic changes characterized by multiple acute ischemic brain strokes along with significant narrowing of several large intracranial arteries. Ceftriaxone treatment for 14 days followed by benzathine benzylpenicillin weekly for additional 3 weeks, showed improvement in meningovascular changes.

Objectives: To characterise 11 colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates recently emerging in hospital settings.

Methods: A. baumannii isolates were collected from hospitalised patients under colistin treatment in three countries of Southeast Europe: Turkey, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Head and neck cancers (HNC) are a heterogeneous group of tumours mainly associated with tobacco and alcohol use and human papillomavirus (HPV). Over 90% of all HNC are squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). Sample material from patients diagnosed with primary HNSCC ( = 76) treated with surgery as primary treatment at a single centre were assessed for HPV genotype, miR-9-5p, miR-21-3p, miR-29a-3p and miR-100-5p expression levels.

Rare cases of drug-induced vasculitis during chemotherapy or concomitant chemoradiotherapy have been described in the literature. Our patient was diagnosed with stage IIIA (cT4N1M0) small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Classical fever of unknown origin in 21 countries with different economic development: an international ID-IRI study.

Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a serious challenge for physicians. The aim of the present study was to consider epidemiology and dynamics of FUO in countries with different economic development. The data of FUO patients hospitalized/followed between 1st July 2016 and 1st July 2021 were collected retrospectively and submitted from referral centers in 21 countries through ID-IRI clinical research platform.

Two-centre experience in the treatment of thyroglossal duct remnants using the modified muscle-sparing Sistrunk technique.

The Sistrunk procedure has long been the method of choice for treating patients with thyroglossal duct remnants (TDRs). However, the extent of the surgical resection in the suprahyoid segment of the TDR remains controversial, as this anatomical site is the origin of both disease recurrence and surgical morbidity. The aim of this two-centre retrospective cohort study was to investigate the outcomes of a modified muscle-sparing Sistrunk procedure in primary TDRs.

Personality Traits and Health Related Quality of Life in Patients with Irritable Bowel Sindrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
