The link between HDL subclasses and the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases remains controversial. We thus evaluated the prognostic value of the HDL subclasses 3 and 2 cholesterol (HDL3-C, HDL2-C) as well as of total HDL-C for 3-month mortality in acute heart failure (AHF) patients. The serum levels of HDL3-C and total HDL-C were determined by detergent-based homogeneous assay.

Introduction: Re-ascended testes account for a proportion of all undescended testes (UDTs); one main hypothesis relating to their etiology relates to a patent processus vaginalis peritonei. The aim was to investigate gubernacular insertion points in boys with late ascended testis as a possible guide to an alternative embryological etiology.
Patients And Methods: Patients with proven ascended testes were recruited from four different pediatric urology centers between May 2016 and September 2017.

Purpose: To determine the demographic and social characteristics of acutely intoxicated patients in the emergency department (ED), intention of drug/chemical intake, main toxic agents, outcomes and time trends for all variables.
Methods: This prospective, observational study included acutely intoxicated patients treated in the ED of the University Hospital Centre Sisters of Charity, Zagreb, Croatia, during the years 2001, 2010 and 2015. The diagnosis was derived from patient's self-report, clinical observations and laboratory test results (quantitative test for serum ethanol levels and qualitative tests for drugs in urine).

Haploidentical stem cell transplantation provides a plausible alternative for the patients when a fully matched donor is unavailable. Historically, the decision of considering haploidentical transplant has remained elusive; however, with the recent advances, the consideration of haploidentical grafts as a treatment option has become more apparent for both allografting for diseases and engraftment failure. We are reporting here an anecdotal case of a successful haploidentical engraftment in a patient with the prior graft failure of an HLA-matched related donor.

Objective: Genetic counseling and testing can be offered to individuals who are at high risk of carrying a breast cancer (BRCA) gene mutation. However, the content of genetic counseling could be difficult to understand due to complex medical information. The aim of this study was to investigate if comprehension can be improved with a new genetic counseling tool (NGCT hereafter; a tool that combines complex medical information with pictures, diagrams and tables) as compared to conventional oral-only genetic counseling (CGC).

Fear of childbirth (FOC) has been mostly studied in peripartum women; however, it can be present in non-pregnant young women, and the question is whether it occurs even before pregnancy planning. (1) to determine the prevalence of clinically significant FOC in non-pregnant female students, and (2) to investigate the role of anxiety sensitivity (AS), trait anxiety, childbirth pain expectancy, and sources of birth knowledge for FOC. Non-pregnant female students ( = 374) from different study programmes (health studies, social sciences and humanities, and biotechnical studies) participated in the study.

Current projections estimate that the number of newborns with sickle cell disease (SCD) globally will exceed 400,000 by 2050. Over the last three decades, increased newborn screening, supportive care, and use of hydroxyurea therapy, have decreased early childhood mortality among individuals affected with SCD. Despite hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) being curative in SCD, its impact on disease free survival remains unknown, especially in adults, partly due to previous limitations in donor options and perceived mortality in adults using myeloablative conditioning.

Background: Serum concentrations of asymmetric (ADMA) and symmetric (SDMA) dimethylarginine are established predictors of total and cardiovascular mortality. However, the predictive capacity of ADMA and SDMA for hospital and 3-months mortality of patients with acute heart failure (AHF) is unknown.
Methods & Results: Out of 152 included AHF patients, 79 (52%) were female, and the mean patient age was 75.

Background: Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary cutaneous disease, characterised by the progressive loss of melanocytes, resulting in hypopigmented skin areas which progressively become amelanotic. Classically, vitiligo treatments are unsatisfactory and challenging. Despite the continuous introduction of new therapies, phototherapy is still the mainstay for vitiligo repigmentation.

Comprehensive molecular characterisation of muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma and variant histological subtypes has led to the identification of recurrent driver mutations that are distinct in these aggressive subgroups of bladder cancer. While distant metastasis dominates as a pattern of relapse following radical cystectomy or chemoradiotherapy, loco-regional control rates are also suboptimal with single modality local treatment, and likewise, harbour equivocal implications on the long-term prognosis of patients. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy for optimising disease control within the pelvis is controversial, with limited evidence to support its efficacy.

The expression of non-metastatic expressed/non-metastatic 23 nucleoside diphosphate kinase 1 (nm23-H1) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) proteins in thyroid carcinoma have been analysed in a number of previous studies, but this requires further study. The current study focused on the expression levels of nm23-H1 and COX-2 in 130 human thyroid papillary carcinoma (PTC) tissues. Of the 130 PTC tissues, 55 were classified as microcarcinoma and may provide information on the development of the specific characteristics of this tumour type.

We hypothesised that the established association of endothelial lipase (EL) plasma levels with atherogenic lipid profile is altered in acute heart failure (AHF) and additionally affected by overlapping metabolic syndrome (MetS). We examined the association of EL plasma levels and lipid/lipoprotein plasma levels in AHF patients without and with overlapping MetS. The study was performed as a single-centre, observational study on 152 AHF patients, out of which 85 had overlapping MetS.

Clinical studies have shown that assessing circulating concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is superior to HDL-cholesterol in predicting cardiovascular risk. We tested the hypothesis that circulating concentrations of HDL particles predict 3-month mortality of patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Out of 152 included patients, 52% were female, additionally the mean patient age was 75.

Dapsone-induced agranulocytosis is a rare but potentially fatal adverse drug reaction (ADR). A 45-year-old male Caucasian patient developed agranulocytosis caused by dapsone (diamino-diphenyl sulfone), which he was prescribed for leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Patient's treatment consisted of termination of dapsone, antibiotic therapy, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor leading to prompt improvement of symptoms and normalization of laboratory blood values.

Uterine sarcomas are rare and heterogeneous tumors characterized by an aggressive clinical behavior. Their high rates of recurrence and mortality point to the urgent need for novel targeted therapies and alternative treatment strategies. However, no molecular prognostic or predictive biomarkers are available so far to guide choice and modality of treatment.

Problem: Various autoimmunologic mechanisms have been shown to be involved in recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). This study aimed to evaluate whether women with RPL have elevated serum levels of common autoimmunologic parameters.
Method Of Study: Serum levels of antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) were measured in 114 women with RPL, and 107 healthy controls using a qualitative immunometric enzyme immunoassay, serum levels of IgG class autoantibodies against histone, IgG class autoantibodies against nucleosomes, and IgG class autoantibodies against double-stranded (ds) DNA were measured by quantitative enzyme immunoassays.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the fifth most common cancer in the world. Although multimodal and targeted therapy is now used in therapeutic procedures, the survival of patients with HNSCC has remained unchanged over the last 30 years. A number of studies have demonstrated that the increased expression of intranuclear ERβ in breast, lung and colon cancer is a favorable prognostic marker associated with higher survival rates.
