This study aimed to evaluate the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) animal sterilizing potential after intratesticular injections and long-term adverse reproductive and systemic effects. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into control and gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) groups. The rats received 200 µL of saline or AuNPs solution (16 µg/mL) on experimental days 1 and 7 (ED1 and ED7).

Differential Regulation of NK Cell Receptors in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

J Immunol Res

June 2022

Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Cancer immunotherapies are preferred over conventional treatments which are highly cytotoxic to normal cells. Focus has been on T cells but natural killer (NK) cells have equal potential. Concepts in cancer control and influence of sex require further investigation to improve successful mobilization of immune cells in cancer patients.

Rationale: Patients preparing for surgery may have isolated, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). Cause analysis is warranted in patients who had neither bleeding symptom nor thromboembolic events because isolated prolongation of APTT may lead to unnecessary delayed surgical intervention or invasive procedure, even ineffective plasma infusion treatments. Here, we report a case of Hashimoto thyroiditis-associated thyroid cancer whose APTT was isolated prolonged and discuss the challenges of diagnosis and clinical management of this patient.

Objective: To evaluate the expression level of LKB1 gene in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and analyze its correlation with illness condition of patients.

Methods: The 98 patients with leukemia in our hospital were divided into two groups according to the diagnosis of patients: ALL group (56 cases) and ANLL group (42 cases). The 50 healthy persons subjected to physical examination were selected as control group.

Introduction: The Sysmex XN-10 automated hematology analyzer (Sysmex Corporation) is routinely used in hematology laboratories to perform complete blood cell count with differential (CBC w/ diff). The sensitivity of this system for blast detection is unclear, since many prior studies evaluating the blast flagging capabilities of Sysmex XN series used the white precursor cell (WPC) channel, which is not cleared for use in the United States.

Methods: We assessed the blast flagging capabilities of the Sysmex XN-10 compared with CellaVision (a cell image analyzer)-assisted visual hematology results.

Background: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a haematological disease characterised by organ infiltration by neoplastic mast cells. Almost all SM patients have a mutation in the gene encoding the tyrosine kinase receptor KIT causing a D816V substitution and autoactivation of the receptor. Mast cells and CD34 haematopoietic progenitors can carry the mutation; however, in which progenitor cell subset the mutation arises is unknown.

Health-related quality of life in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia receiving first-line therapy with nilotinib.

Cancer

May 2018

L. and A. Seràgnoli Institute of Hematology, Department of Experimental, Diagnostic, and Specialty Medicine, S. Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Background: Although a wealth of efficacy and safety data is available for many tyrosine kinase inhibitors used in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), there is a dearth of information on their impact on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The primary objective of this study was to evaluate HRQOL and fatigue outcomes in patients with CML receiving first-line therapy with nilotinib.

Methods: This was a multicenter, prospective study enrolling 130 patients with chronic-phase CML.

Aberrant monocyte responses predict and characterize dengue virus infection in individuals with severe disease.

J Transl Med

May 2017

Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Lembah Pantai, 50603, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Background: Currently, several assays can diagnose acute dengue infection. However, none of these assays can predict the severity of the disease. Biomarkers that predicts the likelihood that a dengue patient will develop a severe form of the disease could permit more efficient patient triage and allows better supportive care for the individual in need, especially during dengue outbreaks.

Assessment of the interlaboratory variability and robustness of JAK2V617F mutation assays: A study involving a consortium of 19 Italian laboratories.

Oncotarget

May 2017

Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, Institute of Hematology 'L. and A. Seràgnoli', University of Bologna, S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, Bologna, Italy.

To date, a plenty of techniques for the detection of JAK2V617F is used over different laboratories, with substantial differences in specificity and sensitivity. Therefore, to provide reliable and comparable results, the standardization of molecular techniques is mandatory.A network of 19 centers was established to 1) evaluate the inter- and intra-laboratory variability in JAK2V617F quantification, 2) identify the most robust assay for the standardization of the molecular test and 3) allow consistent interpretation of individual patient analysis results.

Background: With its elusive pathogenesis, dengue imposes serious healthcare, economic and social burden on endemic countries. This study describes the clinical and immunological parameters of a dengue cohort in a Malaysian city, the first according to the WHO 2009 dengue classification.

Methodology And Findings: This longitudinal descriptive study was conducted in two Malaysian hospitals where patients aged 14 and above with clinical symptoms suggestive of dengue were recruited with informed consent.

Erythrophagocytosis by dysplastic neutrophils in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia and subsequent transformation to acute myeloid leukemia.

Am J Hematol

August 2005

Clinical Hematology Laboratory, Department of Laboratory Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, California 94143-0100, USA.

Erythrophagocytosis by neutrophils is a rare phenomenon in myeloid malignancies, and its clinicopathologic significance is not fully understood. We report a unique case of erythrophagocytosis by dysplastic neutrophils in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) and subsequent transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Review of multiple marrow samples, both pretreatment and post-treatment, demonstrated a correlation between percentage of dysplastic neutrophils and degree of erythrophagocytosis.

Circulating hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) are routinely measured by flow cytometry using CD34 expression. As an alternative, the "immature information" (IMI) channel measurement of the automated hematology analyzer Sysmex SE machines was developed. We tested the IMI channel HPC method with umbilical cord blood specimens.

The Hl/H2 Technicon automated cell analyzer measures, in addition to the usual red blood cell (RBC) parameters, subpopulations of microcytic (M) and hypochromic (H) red blood cells. The M/H ratio may be useful in the differential diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta thalassemia minor (Thal). Thirty-three iron-deficient patients and 26 thalassemia patients were studied.

One hundred eighty-one bone marrow aspirates from 63 patients with acute leukemia were evaluated by the Technicon H1 automated differential counter and by microscopic examination for remission status after chemotherapy. Of the 163 marrows that were conclusive by microscopic examination, 130 were in remission (< 5% blast cells). This study focused on the following H1 alarms/flags to estimate their sensitivity for determination of remission: blast signal (BLSI), large unstained cells alarm (LUCA), baso blast alarm (BBLA), immature granulocytes (IGA) and atypia (ATYP).
