Respir Med Case Rep

December 2024

Central RI [Research Institute] of Epidemiology, Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor), Moscow, Russia.

According to WHO, dengue fever (DF) is currently endemic to more than 100 countries in various regions of Africa, America, and Asia; outbreaks have been reported in Europe. In the Russian Federation, there is a much smaller proportion of children among those infected due to the imported nature of the infection. We described a clinical case of imported dengue fever in an adolescent girl in Moscow after a 5-day vacation.

Epidemiological evidence from the past 20 years indicates that environmental chemicals brought into the air by the vaporization of volatile organic compounds and other anthropogenic pollutants might be involved, at least in part, in the development or progression of psychiatric disorders. This evidence comes primarily from occupational work studies in humans, with indoor occupations being the most important sources of airborne pollutants affecting neural circuits implicated in mood disorders (e.g.

Background: Children from racial and ethnic minority groups are at greater risk for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, but it is unclear whether they have increased risk for post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). Our objectives were to assess whether the risk of respiratory and neurologic PASC differs by race/ethnicity and social drivers of health.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals <21 years seeking care at 24 health systems across the U.

In 2021, a large outbreak of hantavirus disease (HAVID) in Croatia with 334 notified cases coincided with a COVID-19 wave and included patients from areas previously not considered endemic, challenging HAVID recognition and patient management. We analysed clinical and epidemiological data on all 254 patients with HAVID treated in the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka (CHC Rijeka) between February and November 2021. Most patients (n = 246; 96.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in infants. We developed an in vitro model of human respiratory infection to study cellular immune responses to RSV in infants, children, and adults. The model includes human lung epithelial A549 cells or human fetal lung fibroblasts infected with a clinical strain of RSV at a multiplicity of infection of 0.

Background: Adverse birth outcomes (ABO), such as preterm birth (PTB), small and large for gestational age (SGA/LGA), can compromise both the short- and long-term health of mothers and their foetuses. The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the association between maternal serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels in late pregnancy and the risk of ABO, and to evaluate its predictive value of maternal ALP levels for ABO in women with singleton pregnancies.

Methods: A total of 11 853 consecutive pregnant women underwent hepatic and renal function tests, lipid profile assessments, ALP and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels measurements upon admission for labour.

Background: A review of Health Canada's post-market surveillance database has revealed that the reporting of adverse events (AEs) following aesthetic injectable treatments is significantly underreported. To increase reporting, investigators have recently developed a novel Electronic Data Capture system: The Global Registry of Adverse Clinical Events (GRACE).

Objective: To identify the incidence of AEs associated with aesthetic injectable treatments.

Aims And Method: An equitable child mental health service provides access to treatment proportionally to the need of individual demographic groups. Despite qualitative and survey-based evidence of barriers disadvantaging some demographic groups, it is not well understood how these barriers translate into quantifiable inequities. We calculated the treatment access rate for English children aged 6-16 years in 2021-2022, using the patient-level Mental Health Services Data Set and Mental Health of Children and Young People Survey.

Effect of early rehabilitation on hospital stay and postoperative complications in elderly hip fracture patients: a prospective cohort study.

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Emergency Medicine Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, Hengyang Medical School, University of South China, No.69 Chuanshan Road, Shigu District, 421001, Hengyang City, Hunan Province, China.

Background: Hip fractures in the elderly are a major global public health concern, with incidence projected to rise as populations age. Rehabilitation is critical to recovery after hip fracture surgery, but the ideal timing for initiation remains uncertain. While early rehabilitation, within 48 h post-surgery, is associated with better outcomes, its specific impact on hospital stay duration and postoperative complications is not yet conclusively established.

Background: Due to social-structural marginalization, sex workers experience health inequities including a high prevalence of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, mental health disorders, trauma, and substance use, alongside a multitude of barriers to HIV and substance use services. Given limited evidence on sex workers' broader primary healthcare access, we aimed to examine social-structural factors associated with primary care use among sex workers over 7 years.

Methods: Data were derived from An Evaluation of Sex Workers Health Access (AESHA), a community-based open prospective cohort of women (cis and trans) sex workers in Metro Vancouver, from 2014 to 2021.

Developing a comprehensive inventory to define harm reduction housing.

Harm Reduct J

January 2025

Opioid Policy Research Collaborative, Heller School for Social Policy & Management, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA, USA.

Background: The City of Boston has faced unprecedented challenges with substance use amidst changes to the illicit drug supply and increased visibility of homelessness. Among its responses, Boston developed six low threshold harm reduction housing (HRH) sites geared towards supporting the housing needs of people who use drugs (PWUD) and addressing health and safety concerns around geographically concentrated tent encampments. HRH sites are transitional supportive housing that adhere to a "housing first" approach where abstinence is not required and harm reduction services and supports are co-located.
