The early abstinence period is a crucial phase in alcohol use disorder (AUD) in which patients have to find a new equilibrium and may start recovery, or conversely, relapse. However, the changes in brain functions during this key period are still largely unknown. We set out to study longitudinal changes in large-scale brain networks during the early abstinence period using resting-state scans.

BACKGROUNDWarts, hypogammaglobulinemia, infections, and myelokathexis (WHIM) syndrome is a primary immunodeficiency disorder caused by heterozygous gain-of-function CXCR4 mutations. Myelokathexis is a kind of neutropenia caused by neutrophil retention in bone marrow and in WHIM syndrome is associated with lymphopenia and monocytopenia. The CXCR4 antagonist plerixafor mobilizes leukocytes to the blood; however, its safety and efficacy in WHIM syndrome are undefined.

Sequences of spiking activity have been heavily implicated as potential substrates of memory formation and retrieval across many species. A parallel line of recent evidence also asserts that sequential activity may arise from and be constrained by pre-existing network structure. Here we reconcile these two lines of research in the human brain by measuring single unit spiking sequences in the temporal lobe cortex as participants perform an episodic memory task.

  • GPs recognize their role in dementia prevention but often don't discuss it with patients, despite being aware of modifiable risk factors.
  • They suggest a team-based approach to integrate dementia risk communication into existing health reviews and checks for at-risk individuals.
  • Key barriers include time constraints and a lack of education on dementia risks, with 'brain health' being a more favorable term for discussions to alleviate patient anxiety.

PATHA's vision for transgender healthcare under the current health reforms.

N Z Med J

April 2023

Senior Lecturer and General Practitioner, Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice, University of Otago, Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Aim: The Aotearoa New Zealand healthcare system does not adequately meet the needs of transgender people. Due to healthcare reforms and increases in funding and awareness of transgender health, the Ministry of Health has met with the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA) to discuss ways to improve the healthcare system. We developed a vision for a transgender healthcare document to enable a process for our members to collaborate and to increase transparency about what advice PATHA has provided to the Ministry.

The field of Global Mental Health (GMH) aims to address the global burden of mental illness by focusing on closing the "treatment gap" faced by many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To increase access to services, GMH prioritizes "scaling up" mental health services, primarily advocating for the export of Western centred and developed biomedical and psychosocial "evidence-based" approaches to the Global South. While this emphasis on scalability has resulted in the increased availability of mental health services in some LMICs, there have been few critical discussions of this strategy.

Novel Approaches in the Systemic Management of High-Risk Prostate Cancer.

Clin Genitourin Cancer

December 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology, GenesisCare Madrid, Madrid, Spain; Department of Radiation Oncology, GenesisCare Madrid Clinical Director, Hospital San Francisco de Asís and Hospital Vithas La Milagrosa, National Chair of Research and Clinical Trials, GenesisCare, Madrid, Spain.

Locally advanced prostate cancer comprises approximately 20% of new prostate cancer diagnoses. For these patients, international guidelines recommend treatment with radiotherapy (RT) to the prostate in combination with long-term (2-3 years) androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), or radical prostatectomy in combination with extended pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) as another treatment option for selected patients as part of multimodal therapy. Improvements in overall survival with docetaxel or an androgen receptor signaling inhibitor have been achieved in patients with metastatic castration sensitive or castration resistant prostate cancer.

Brain volumes in alcohol use disorder: Do females and males differ? A whole-brain magnetic resonance imaging mega-analysis.

Hum Brain Mapp

September 2023

Neuroscience of Addiction and Mental Health Program, Healthy Brain and Mind Research Centre, School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, Australian Catholic University, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia.

Emerging evidence suggests distinct neurobiological correlates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) between sexes, which however remain largely unexplored. This work from ENIGMA Addiction Working Group aimed to characterize the sex differences in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) correlates of AUD using a whole-brain, voxel-based, multi-tissue mega-analytic approach, thereby extending our recent surface-based region of interest findings on a nearly matching sample using a complementary methodological approach. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 653 people with AUD and 326 controls was analyzed using voxel-based morphometry.

Low-income, underrepresented communities of color are disproportionally affected by emotional distress. Little is known about malleable, household-level determinants of emotional distress, addressable by feasible, stigma-neutral interventions. The present study addressed this knowledge gap by analyzing secondary data from a cross-sectional community needs assessment survey in a marginalized urban community (N = 677).

Postinsertion adjustment appointments and their association with cast removable partial denture survival.

J Prosthet Dent

August 2023

Associate Professor and Clinical Director, Craniofacial Prosthetics Unit, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Statement Of Problem: Successful outcomes with cast removable partial dentures (RPDs) are dependent on adequate fabrication and adjustments at the delivery appointment. Evaluation of the number and frequency of postinsertion follow-up appointments helps determine whether the prosthesis continues to fit comfortably and whether function and esthetics continue to be satisfactory. Reports on the number of appointments and frequency and type of adjustments required for RPDs following insertion are sparse.

Improving Periodontal Disease Management With Artificial Intelligence.

Compend Contin Educ Dent

June 2023

Clinical Director, Overjet, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts.

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of the adult population, with an incidence positively correlated with age. A lack of standardization relating to periodontitis diagnosis and management, however, can often result in instances of undiagnosed and untreated oral disease. Progressive approaches to care, such as incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology into dental practice software, can assist dental providers in standardizing the diagnosis of periodontitis and contribute to increased treatment acceptance by improving patients' health literacy and understanding of their periodontal condition.

Introduction: Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are common, usually benign tumors of the anterior pituitary gland which, for the most part, have no known genetic cause. PAs are associated with major clinical effects due to hormonal dysregulation and tumoral impingement on vital brain structures. PAM encodes a multifunctional protein responsible for the essential C-terminal amidation of secreted peptides.
