Background: Stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) was developed to reduce the impact of long-term chronic glycemic factors on stress hyperglycemia levels, which have been linked to clinical adverse events. However, the relationship between SHR and the short- and long-term prognoses of intensive care unit (ICU) patients remains unclear.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 3,887 ICU patients (cohort 1) whose initial fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c data within 24 hours of admission were available and 3,636 ICU patients (cohort 2) who were followed-up for 1-year using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV v2.

Over the past month, a new AI model called Chatbot Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), has received enormous attention in the media and scientific communities due to its ability to process and respond to commands in a humanistic fashion. As reported, five days after its launch, the number of registered users of ChatGPT exceeded one million, and its monthly active users had exceeded 100 million two months later, making it the most rapidly growing consumer application in history. The advent of ChatGPT has further brought about new ideas and challenges in the realm of infectious disease.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) offers unprecedented opportunities for joint arthroplasty surgery. Notably, on 14th March, 2023, the OpenAI company officially launched its latest version GPT-4, which once again become the focus of discussion on social media. Although more than 200 articles have reported the potential role of ChatGPT/GPT-4 in various areas, there are no studies that discussed the potential of GPT-4 as an AI-powered virtual assistant for surgeons specialized in joint arthroplasty.

Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a key biomarker for cancer immunotherapy and prognosis. Integration of MSI testing into a next-generation-sequencing (NGS) panel could save tissue sample, reduce turn-around time and cost, and provide MSI status and comprehensive genomic profiling in single test. We aimed to develop an MSI calling model to detect MSI status along with the NGS panel-based profiling test using tumor-only samples.

Anti-contactin-1 (CNTN1) IgG4 antibody-associated nodopathies is an autoimmune antibody-mediated peripheral neuropathy with a unique clinical presentation, pathophysiology, electrophysiology, and therapeutic response. The critical histopathological features are a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, a storiform pattern of fibrosis, and obliterative phlebitis. Here, a 62-year-old male patient presented with subacute unilateral limb onset, progressive exacerbation, marked weakness of the extremities, cranial, and autonomic nerve involvement.

Previous studies have mainly explored the effects of structural and functional aging of cortical regions on global motion sensitivity in older adults, but none have explored the structural white matter (WM) substrates underlying the age-related decrease in global motion perception (GMP). In this study, random dot kinematogram and diffusion tensor imaging were used to investigate the effects of age-related reductions in WM fiber integrity and connectivity across various regions on GMP. We recruited 106 younger adults and 94 older adults and utilized both tract-based spatial statistics analysis and graph theoretical analysis to comprehensively investigate group differences in WM microstructural and network connections between older and younger adults at the microscopic and macroscopic levels.

Background: High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein is one of the main risk factors for pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). However, studies of the relationship between HMGB1 and PARDS are lacking. We evaluated the link between anomalies of intraoperative serum HMGB1 and PARDS in pediatric LDLT recipients with biliary atresia during the first week after transplant.

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), one of the top 10 causes of cancer death, is responsible for more than 90% of all cases of primary renal cancer worldwide. Follicular dendritic cell-secreted protein (FDC-SP) specifically binds to activated B cells and regulates the generation of antibodies. It is also thought to promote cancer cell invasion and migration, which could help with tumor metastases.

The study aimed to evaluate whether an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) could improve the prognosis of patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) of Stage C (Classic), Stage D (Deteriorating), and Stage E (Extremis) based on Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) classification. The hospital information database was searched, and the patients who met the diagnostic criteria of CS were included and treated following the same protocol. The association between IABP and the survival of patients at 1 month and 6 months were analyzed separately in SCAI stage C of CS, and stages D and E of CS.

Lung cancer has high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide, and NSCLC accounts for 85% of all lung cancer cases. Despite the development of targeted therapies and immunotherapy, many NSCLC patients do not effectively respond to treatment, and new treatment strategies are urgently needed. Aberrant activation of the FGFR signaling pathway is closely related to the initiation and progression of tumors.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 8,141 individuals with type 2 diabetes who participated in the Kailuan Study during 2010-2018 and completed the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) assessment for arterial stiffness, an indicator for VA. The age- and sex-specific 10th and 90th percentiles of baPWV based on a reference cohort were used as cutoffs to define supernormal VA (SUPERNOVA, baPWV<10th percentiles), normal VA (NVA, baPWV 10th to 90th percentiles), and early VA (EVA, baPWV>90th percentiles).

Aging increases the risk of stroke, may exacerbate neuroinflammatory responses, reduce angiogenesis, and promote white matter damage post-stroke, all of which contribute to long-term functional recovery. Butyric acid, an important gut microbial metabolite, showed the highest correlation with the outcomes of ischemic stroke, and butyrate was selected as an effective treatment for aged stroke mice. Here, we tested the neurorestorative effect and potential therapeutic mechanisms of butyrate in aged mice with stroke.

Myocardial infarction (MI) induces early-stage breast cancer progression and increases breast cancer patients' mortality and morbidity. Insulin-like peptide 6 (INSL6) overexpression can impede cardiotoxin-induced injury through myofiber regeneration, playing a significant role in MI progression. To investigate the diverse significance of INSL6 in a variety of malignant tumors, we explored INSL6 through MI GEO dataset and multiple omics data integrative analysis, such as gene expression level, enriched pathway analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis, and immune subtypes as well as diagnostic value and prognostic value in pancancer.

Increasing evidence suggests that long non-coding riboneucleic acids (lncRNAs), as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), play a key role in the initiation, invasion, and metastasis of cancer. As a new hypothesis, the lncRNA-micro RNA (miRNA)-messenger RNA (mRNA), ceRNA regulatory network has been successfully constructed in a variety of cancers. However, lncRNA, which plays a ceRNA function in endometrial cancer (EC), is still poorly understood.
