The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of acute kidney injury caused by high doses of folic acid on cardiac function and markers of oxidative stress in serum and isolated rat heart. Isolated hearts of Wistar albino rats (divided into two groups: control and folic acid group) were perfused according to Langendorff technique at basal coronary perfusion pressure CPP of 70 cm HO. After a stabilization period, CPP was lowered to 60 cm HO and then gradually increased to 80, 100, 120 and finally decreased to 40 cm HO in order to establish coronary autoregulation.

Galectin-3 regulates numerous biological processes in the gut. We investigated molecular mechanisms responsible for the Galectin-3-dependent regulation of colon inflammation and evaluated whether Galectin-3 may be used as biomarker for monitoring the progression of ulcerative colitis (UC). The differences in disease progression between dextran sodium sulphate-treated wild type and Galectin-3-deficient mice were investigated and confirmed in clinical settings, in 65 patients suffering from mild, moderate, and severe colitis.

Previous studies have suggested that thiamine has antioxidant activity and could decrease the production of ROS in various disorders. Our study focused on the effect of thiamine hydrochloride in the reversal of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity and compared it with the reversal in the absence of thiamine pre-treatment. Rats were divided into groups as follows: (a) thiamine + doxorubicin (TIA + DOX), (b) doxorubicin (DOX) and c) healthy (CTRL) groups.

Background: In patients with only upper (C5, C6) brachial plexus palsy (BPP), the pooled international data strongly favor nerve transfers over nerve grafts. In patients with complete BPP, some authors favor nerve grafts for the restoration of priority functions whenever there is a viable proximal stump.
Objective: To evaluate functional recovery in cases of upper and complete BPP where only direct graft repair from viable proximal stumps was performed.

Cognitive impairment frequently occurs in epilepsy patients. Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) have poor drug responsivity and higher seizure frequency which consequently lead to brain damage and may have implications on cognitive status. In the present study, we assessed a frequency and degree of cognitive impairment in 52 patients with drug-sensitive epilepsy (DSE) and 103 DRE patients at three time points (baseline, after 12 and 18 months).

There are many determinants of vancomycin clearance, but these have not been analyzed separately in populations with different levels of renal function, which could be why some important factors have been missed. The aim of our study was to compare the pharmacokinetic parameters and factors that may affect vancomycin pharmacokinetics in groups of patients with normal renal function and in those with chronic kidney failure. The study used a population pharmacokinetic modeling approach, based on plasma vancomycin concentrations and other data from 78 patients with chronic kidney failure and 32 patients with normal renal function.

Purpose: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are now routinely treated by radiopeptide targeted therapy using somatostatin receptor-binding peptides such as Y- and Lu-DOTATOC. The objective of this work was to develop a biokinetics model of Y labelled DOTATOC, which is applied in the therapy of NETs to estimate doses in kidney and tumor.
Methods: A multi-compartment model described by two sets of differential equations, one set for the actual 30-min infusion and the other set for the post-infusion period was developed and activities were measured by liquid scintillation counting in blood (compartment 1) and the urine (compartment 3).

Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and in depression. Fatigue is the most disabling symptom in patients with MS and could also be a part of depressive symptomatology. In this study, we measured the serum levels of uric acid (UA) as a marker of oxidative stress and C-reactive protein (CRP) as an inflammatory marker, in 98 patients with MS in relapse and remitting phase of illness and 35 healthy subjects.

Background: Dendritic cell (DC)-derived indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) degrades tryptophan to kynurenine, which promotes conversion of inflammatory T cells in immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs). We analyzed the significance of the IDO:Treg axis for inducing and maintaining mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis (UC).
Methods: Dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced colitis in BALB/c mice (model for mucosal healing) and C57BL/6 mice (model for persistent disease) was used.

Background: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume-to-platelet count (MPV/PC) ratio are readily available parameters that might have discriminative power regarding outcome. The aim of our study was to assess prognostic value of these biomarkers regarding outcome in critically ill patients with secondary sepsis and/or trauma.
Methods: A total of 392 critically ill and injured patients, admitted to surgical ICU, were enrolled in a prospective observational study.
