  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder in women that can lead to infertility and metabolic issues, studied using animal models to inform treatment approaches.
  • The experiment involved female rats divided into three groups: a control group, a group treated with estradiol-valerate (EV), and a group receiving both EV and a high-fat diet (HFD), to examine how these factors affect PCOS symptoms.
  • The findings revealed that the combination of EV and HFD exacerbated symptoms like hormonal imbalance and glucose metabolism issues, indicating a stronger correlation between oxidative stress and PCOS-related metabolic and reproductive characteristics.

Chest X-ray has verified its role as a crucial tool in COVID-19 assessment due to its practicability, especially in emergency units, and Brixia score has proven as a useful tool for COVID-19 pneumonia grading. The aim of our study was to investigate correlations between main laboratory parameters, vaccination status, and Brixia score, as well as to confirm if Brixia score is a significant independent predictor of unfavorable outcome (death) in COVID-19 patients. The study was designed as a cross-sectional multicentric study.

Although Medical Physics educators have historically contributed to the education of the non-physics healthcare professions, their role was not studied in a systematic manner. In 2009, EFOMP set up a group to research the issue. In their first paper, the group carried out an extensive literature review regarding physics teaching for the non-physics healthcare professions.

Article Synopsis
  • The primary focus of the study is on diabetic macular edema as a leading cause of vision loss in diabetics, particularly in pseudophakic eyes, which have previously undergone cataract surgery.
  • The research involved 24 pseudophakic eyes with persistent diabetic macular edema, comparing two treatment groups: one receiving only aflibercept and the other a combination of aflibercept and triamcinolone acetonide.
  • Results showed that the combined therapy led to a greater reduction in central macular thickness over 12 months, indicating better anatomical outcomes, but did not significantly improve visual acuity compared to aflibercept alone.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on real-life patients with severe asthma starting anti-interleukin-5 (IL5) treatment in Europe, assessing how they differ from those included in randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Out of 1231 patients, only about 27% met the eligibility criteria of RCTs, with key differences in smoking history, clinical factors, and medication use noted.
  • The findings highlight that many patients who could benefit from anti-IL5 therapies may be overlooked in clinical trials, underscoring the value of studying broader patient populations in real-world settings.

An increase in blood lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels, mostly genetically determined, has been identified as an independent risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. No drug has yet been approved that markedly lowers Lp(a) and thereby reduces residual cardiovascular risk. The aim of this article was to critically review the evidence from clinical development studies to date on the efficacy and safety of new RNA-based therapeutics for targeted lowering of Lp(a).

The PCSK9 (Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9) enzyme interferes with the metabolism of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Inhibition of PCSK9 results in lower LDL cholesterol levels, which can be achieved by different molecular pathways. Monoclonal antibodies targeting circulating PCSK9 have shown strong and persistent effects on lowering the LDL cholesterol level, while reducing the risk of future cardiovascular events.

December 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Kragujevac, 34000 Kragujevac, Serbia.

Adiponectin is one of the most important molecules in the body's compensatory response to the development of insulin resistance. By trying to maintain insulin sensitivity, increase insulin secretion and prevent inflammation, adiponectin tries to maintain glucose homeostasis. Interleukin-33, which belongs to the group of alarmins, also promotes insulin secretion.
