1Tissue Engineering Centre, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, 12th Floor, Clinical Block, Jalan Yaacob Latif, Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, 56000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Background: Urinary tract is subjected to a variety of disorders such as urethral stricture, which often develops as a result of scarring process. Urethral stricture can be treated by urethral dilation and urethrotomy; but in cases of long urethral strictures, substitution urethroplasty with genital skin and buccal mucosa grafts is the only option. However a number of complications such as infection as a result of hair growth in neo-urethra, and stone formation restrict the application of those grafts.

The complex effects of estradiol on non-reproductive tissues/cells, including lymphoid tissues and immunocytes, have increasingly been explored. However, the role of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the regulation of these genomic and non-genomic actions of estradiol is controversial. Moreover, the expression of SHBG and its internalization by potential receptors, as well as the influence of SHBG on estradiol uptake and signaling in lymphocytes has remained unexplored.

Preeclampsia is a disease of the mother, fetus, and placenta, and the gaps in our understanding of the complex interactions among their respective disease pathways preclude successful treatment and prevention. The placenta has a key role in the pathogenesis of the terminal pathway characterized by exaggerated maternal systemic inflammation, generalized endothelial damage, hypertension, and proteinuria. This of preeclampsia may be triggered by distinct underlying mechanisms that occur at early stages of pregnancy and induce different phenotypes.

Background Context: One of the characteristics of reported observations in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is that the thoracic spine is longer anteriorly than posteriorly, more pronounced around the apex than the transitional zones. This reversal of the normal kyphotic anatomy of the thoracic spine is related to questions of etiopathogenesis of AIS. The changes in the anatomy of the anterior column have been described rather in detail; however, the role of the posterior spinal column and the laminae has so far not been elucidated.

Division of Hand and Microsurgery, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Prince of Wales Hospital, Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Club Lusitano, 16/F, 16 Ice House Street, Central, Hong Kong SAR.

Article Synopsis
  • Focal chondral lesions can cause chronic wrist pain, and the authors introduced a new treatment using arthroscopic transplantation of osteochondral autografts from the femur to the wrist.
  • In a study of 4 patients, grafts were successfully incorporated within 3 to 4 months post-surgery and all patients reported improved wrist function and no pain on average 70.5 months later.
  • Follow-up examinations showed preserved cartilage in 3 patients, high levels of patient satisfaction, and no complications from the procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare tissue factor (TF) and tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) levels in pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE) or small for gestational age (SGA) infants to those in normal pregnancies.
  • Results showed that women with PE had significantly higher plasma TF activity compared to those with normal pregnancies and SGA infants, while TFPI levels did not differ significantly.
  • The findings suggest that elevated TF activity in women with PE may contribute to increased thrombin generation, but there is no direct link between TF/TFPI activity and having an SGA infant.
