Fecal lactoferrin and fecal calprotectin have been proposed as biomarkers of intestinal inflammation in several animal species. The main objectives of this work were to validate an analytical procedure for the measurement of lactoferrin in calf feces, to study the correlation between lactoferrin and calprotectin concentrations, and to evaluate the influence of fecal water content in the determination of these proteins. This knowledge is essential for effectively using these biomarkers in young calves exposed to inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases.

Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a pivotal role in therapy resistance and tumor relapse, emphasizing the need for reliable models that recapitulate the complexity of the CSC tumor microenvironment to accelerate drug discovery. We present a bioprinted breast CSC tumor-stroma model incorporating triple-negative breast CSCs (TNB-CSCs) and stromal cells (human breast fibroblasts), within a breast-derived decellularized extracellular matrix bioink. Comparison of molecular signatures in this model with different clinical subtypes of bioprinted tumor-stroma models unveils a unique molecular profile for artificial CSC tumor models.

Consensus guidelines for genotype-guided fluoropyrimidine dosing based on variation in the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPYD) gene before treatment have been firmly established. The prior pharmacogenetic report avoids the serious toxicity that inevitably occurred in a non-negligible percentage of the treated patients. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most frequent pathophysiological state of pregnancy, which in many cases produces fetuses with macrosomia, requiring increased nutrient transport in the placenta. Recent studies by our group have demonstrated that leptin is a key hormone in placental physiology, and its expression is increased in placentas affected by GDM. However, the effect of leptin on placental nutrient transport, such as transport of glucose, amino acids, and lipids, is not fully understood.

Kirsten rat sarcoma (KRAS) is a small GTPase which acts as a molecular switch to regulate several cell biological processes including cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Alterations in KRAS have been found in 25% of all human cancers, with pancreatic cancer (90%), colorectal cancer (45%), and lung cancer (35%) being the types of cancer with the highest mutation rates. KRAS oncogenic mutations are not only responsible for malignant cell transformation and tumor development but also related to poor prognosis, low survival rate, and resistance to chemotherapy.
