Candidemia is the predominant form of invasive candidiasis and the most frequently occurring serious fungal infection in critically ill patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Studies carried out in Latin America reveal a higher incidence of candidemia and higher mortality rates when compared to North America or Europe. This highlights the need to develop guidelines for correctly diagnosing and treating candidemia in critically ill patients in the ICU.

Preoperative immunonutrition and postoperative outcomes in patients with cancer undergoing major abdominal surgery: retrospective cohort study.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

December 2024

Grupo de Investigación en Nutrición Clínica y Rehabilitación, Fundación Universitaria Sanitas, Clínicas Colsanitas, Grupo Keralty, Bogotá, Colombia; Facultad de Medicina, Fundación Universitaria Sanitas, Bogotá, Colombia; Vicepresidencia de innovación y desarrollo científico, Clínica Universitaria Colombia, Clínica Infantil Santa María del Lago, Clínica Reina Sofía Pediátrica y Mujer, Clínicas Colsanitas, Grupo Keralty, Bogotá, Colombia. Electronic address:

Background And Objectives: Surgical resection is a first-line treatment for patients with cancer, but preoperative malnutrition is a risk factor for postoperative complications. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative administration of an immunonutrition regimen and postoperative clinical outcomes in patients with cancer undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Methods: The Surgical Prehabilitation Multimodal Oncology (SUPREMO) retrospective cohort study, conducted from January 2021 to December 2023, included patients with cancer undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Introduction: Living kidney donation is currently low in Colombia, and this is associated with the lack of knowledge of the risks and renal function outcomes of potential donors; there are no studies that evaluate these outcomes. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of renal function, the incidence of metabolic diseases, arterial hypertension, as well as the finding of albuminuria and/or proteinuria in living kidney donors with a 2-year follow-up post donation.

Methods: Observational study in living kidney donor patients, in which renal function outcomes were evaluated between the predonation period and up to 24 months postdonation.

In Latin America, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer overall and the most common in men, with the highest mortality rate of all cancers. In 2022, there were approximately 22,985 new prostate cancer cases and 61,056 deaths from prostate cancer in the region. Patients with metastatic disease that is resistant to cure by castration now have multiple therapeutic options, including poly-ADP ribose polymerase inhibitors.

Background: Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) identifies genetic alterations and patterns that are crucial for therapy selection and precise treatment development. In Colombia, limited access to CGP tests underscores the necessity of documenting the prevalence of treatable genetic alterations. This study aimed to describe the somatic genetic profile of specific cancer types in Colombian patients and assess its impact on treatment selection.

The impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on heart failure (HF) has yet to be well assessed in the Latin American population. This study aimed to analyze the impact of COPD on HF patients from the Colombian Heart Failure Registry (RECOLFACA). The primary outcome was all-cause mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to compare the overall survival rates of patients with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent simple hysterectomy with lymph node staging versus those who had radical hysterectomy with lymph node staging.
  • Researchers analyzed data from the National Cancer Database from 2010 to 2019, matching patients based on various factors such as age, tumor size, and comorbidities.
  • The results found no significant difference in overall survival, readmission rates, or mortality rates between the two surgical approaches, indicating that both procedures may have similar outcomes for early-stage cervical cancer patients.

Objective: In patients with non-small cell lung cancer, lymph node assessment is essential for appropriate staging. The intrapulmonary lymph nodes (IPLNs) should be considered when assigning the N stage but are infrequently evaluated in Colombian centers, resulting in understaging that may hinder optimal treatment.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study of IPLN dissection in patients with clinical stage I or II non-small cell lung cancer who underwent surgical resection at 9 institutions in Colombia between 2021 and 2023.

The effect of the health insurance type on the prognosis of heart failure (HF) patients in Colombia and Latin America is poorly known. We aimed to analyze the characteristics of HF patients that participated in the Colombian Heart Failure Registry (RECOLFACA) as stated by their health insurance type and their relationship with the immediate prognosis of these patients. Patients with HF diagnosis were included in the RECOLFACA registry between 2017-2019.

Background: The diagnosis and treatment of lung, colon, and gastric cancer through the histologic characteristics and genomic biomarkers have not had a strong impact on the mortality rates of the top three global causes of death by cancer.

Methods: Twenty-five transcriptomic analyses (10 lung cancer, 10 gastric cancer, and 5 colon cancer datasets) followed our own bioinformatic pipeline based on the utilization of specialized libraries from the R language and DAVID´s gene enrichment analyses to identify a regulatory metafirm network of transcription factors and target genes common in every type of cancer, with experimental evidence that supports its relationship with the unlocking of cell phenotypic plasticity for the acquisition of the hallmarks of cancer during the tumoral process. The network's regulatory functional and signaling pathways might depend on the constant crosstalk with the microbiome network established in the oral-gut-lung axis.

Despite promising results, reimplantation appears to have fallen into oblivion among the multiple possible approaches for repairing anomalous coronary arteries. We describe the outcomes of 12 patients with an anomalous right coronary artery originating from the opposite sinus of Valsalva with an interarterial course who were surgically treated with this technique between 2018 and 2023 in 2 institutions in Bogota, Colombia. We provide preliminary evidence of the value reimplantation as a more than suitable technique, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

Value of sentinel node ultrastaging and pathologic techniques in tumoral detection.

Curr Opin Oncol

September 2024

Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Instituto Nacional de Cancerología.

Article Synopsis
  • Sentinel lymph node assessment is increasingly used for early-stage gynecologic cancers but lacks a standard pathology protocol for ultrastaging.
  • Studies show high diagnostic accuracy for sentinel lymph node detection, but variations in methodologies limit clear recommendations.
  • The absence of an agreed-upon ultrastaging protocol highlights a need for collaboration between gynecologic oncology and pathology to improve surgical management of these cancers.

Vulvar cancer is a rare oncologic pathology, accounting for only 3%-5% of all gynecologic neoplasms, with squamous cell carcinoma responsible for more than 90% of these cases; the remaining 10% includes Paget disease, lichen sclerosus, and vulvar melanoma. Radical vulvectomy has become the gold standard treatment due to the high recurrence rate and effective local control in patients with squamous cell carcinoma stages IB to IVA. To address these needs, various reconstructive options have been reported in the literature, each potentially offering different results due to their diverse nature.

Objective: Patients with intermediate-risk cervical cancer receive external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) as adjuvant treatment. It is commonly administered with brachytherapy without proven benefits. Therefore, we evaluated the frequency of brachytherapy use, the doses for EBRT administered alone or with brachytherapy, and the overall survival impact of brachytherapy in patients with intermediate-risk, early-stage cervical cancer.
