CyberKnife Radiosurgery for refractory bilateral trigeminal neuralgia. Case report.

Unlabelled: Case description: A case of a 37-year-old female patient suffering from refractory bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is presented, who underwent various interventions such as acupuncture, block therapies and even microvascular decompression without effective pain relief.

Clinical Findings: Paresthesias and shooting-like twinges of pain intensity 10/10 in bilateral maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve, with nasal and intraoral triggers that made eating impossible, becoming increasingly severe since refractoriness to microvascular decompression and carbamazepines, triggering the twinges even during sleep, generating somnolence, depressive mood and social isolation.

Treatment And Results: The patient was evaluated by an interdisciplinary neuro-oncology team, where, in accordance with the analysis of the brain magnetic resonance imaging and the patient's history, it was indicated to perform Cyberknife® radiosurgery in monofraction on the left trigeminal and subsequently treat the contralateral trigeminal.

Role of kinesiophobia in the selective motor control during gait in patients with low back-related leg pain.

Fear of movement has been related to changes in motor function in patients with low back pain, but little is known about how kinesiophobia affects selective motor control during gait (ability of muscles performing distinct mechanical functions) in patients with low back-related leg pain (LBLP). The aim of the study was to determine the association between kinesiophobia and selective motor control in patients with LBLP. An observational cross-sectional study was performed on 18 patients.

Background: Navigated augmented reality (AR) through a head-mounted display (HMD) may lead to accurate glenoid component placement in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the deviation between planned, intra- and postoperative inclination, retroversion, entry point, depth, and rotation of the glenoid component placement assisted by a navigated AR through HMD during RSA.

Methods: Both shoulders of 6 fresh frozen human cadavers, free from fractures or other bony pathologies, were used.

Background: Hypervirulent clonal complex (cc) have been associated with higher incidence and case fatality rate of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). The aim of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations of the hypervirulent cc of meningococcus in children.

Methods: Retrospective study in patients hospitalized by IMD microbiologically confirmed at three children's tertiary health care centers in Santiago, Chile, between 2010 and 2018.

Purpose: High success rates and minimal complications have consolidated arthroscopy as the therapeutic alternative of choice for minimally invasive treatment of internal disorders (ID) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). However, there is no certainty regarding the demographic and clinical factors associated with the technique's success or failure. This study was performed to analyze the effectiveness of arthroscopy regarding pain and the mandibular dynamics and also to determine whether variables such as age, sex, and preoperative Wilkes stage influence the results.

Background: Choosing the optimal treatment for massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) still poses a surgical problem. In MRCTs with good muscle quality, but short tendon length, nonaugmented repairs lead to high failure rates of up to 90%. The aim of the study was to evaluate midterm clinical and radiologic outcomes of massive rotator cuff tears with good muscle quality, but short tendon length, which were repaired with synthetic patch augmentation.

In 2020, there was an estimated prevalence of more than 1.8 million adults with congenital heart disease (ACHDs) living in South America, and 677,000 in Central America and the Caribbean. The ACHD mortality is higher in developing countries, compared with developed countries, and it has been shown that concentrating this population in specialized ACHD units improves their survival and prognosis.

Background: Severe complicated intra-abdominal sepsis (SCIAS) has an increasing incidence with mortality rates over 80% in some settings. Mortality typically results from disruption of the gastrointestinal tract, progressive and self-perpetuating bio-mediator generation, systemic inflammation, and multiple organ failure. A further therapeutic option may be open abdomen (OA) management with negative peritoneal pressure therapy (NPPT) to remove inflammatory ascites and attenuate the systemic damage from SCIAS, although there are definite risks of leaving the abdomen open whenever it might possibly be closed.

Mitochondria-endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulum (ER/SR) interaction and mitochondrial fusion/fission are critical processes that influence substrate oxidation. This narrative review summarizes the evidence on the effects of substrate availability on mitochondrial-SR interaction and mitochondria fusion/fission dynamics to modulate substrate oxidation in human skeletal muscle. Evidence shows that an increase in mitochondria-SR interaction and mitochondrial fusion are associated with elevated fatty acid oxidation.

The relief of the impediment to urinary flow is the treatment of acute kidney failure due to urinary tract obstruction. However, there is a risk of inducing massive polyuria, which can be self-limited or produce severe contraction of the intravascular volume with pre-renal acute kidney failure and alterations in the internal environment. Polyuria, urine output > 3 L/d or > 200 mL/min for more than 2 hours, can have multiple causes, and can be classified as osmotic, aqueous or mixed.

Neither Chia Flour nor Whey Protein Supplementation Further Improves Body Composition or Strength Gains after a Resistance Training Program in Young Subjects with a Habitual High Daily Protein Intake.

The aim of this study was to compare the potential additional effect of chia flour, whey protein, and a placebo juice to resistance training on fat-free mass (FFM) and strength gains in untrained young men. Eighteen healthy, untrained young men underwent an 8-week whole-body resistance training program, comprising three sessions per week. Subjects were randomized into three groups that after each training session consumed: (1) 30 g whey protein concentrate containing 23 g protein (WG), (2) 50 g chia flour containing 20 g protein (CG), or (3) a placebo not containing protein (PG).

Dynamic assessment of serum chromogranin A and treatment response with abiraterone acetate in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Objective: Elevated serum chromogranin A (CGA) is associated with intrinsic or treatment-related neuroendocrine differentiation (NED) in men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Fluctuations in serum CGA during treatment of mCRPC have had conflicting results. We analyzed the impact of (i) rising serum CGA and (ii) baseline CGA/PSA ratio during treatment to identify associations with abiraterone acetate (AA) therapy.

With the advancement of knowledge in relation to the physiopathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD), several new therapeutic forms have been developed. There are also new guidelines for self-care. On the other hand, there is still an underdiagnosis of AD in Mexico.

Risk of vitamin D deficit in asthmatic children hospitalized in the north area of Santiago.

Introduction: in recent years asthma hospitalization rate in Chilean children has doubled. Numerous studies have shown an association between hypovitaminosis D and frequent, severe asthmatic exacerbations in children. Objective: to estimate the risk of vitamin D (vitD) deficiency and insufficiency in hospitalized asthmatic children compared with patients who are monitored on an outpatient basis and do not have records of hospitalization in one year.

Intrahospital supervised exercise training improves survival rate among hypertensive patients with COVID-19.

Among the people most affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are those suffering from hypertension (HTN). However, pharmacological therapies for HTN are ineffective against COVID-19 progression and severity. It has been proposed that exercise training (EX) could be used as post-COVID treatment, which does not rule out the possible effects during hospitalization for COVID-19.

High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin I Thresholds to Identify Myocardial Injury After Noncardiac Surgery: A Cohort Study.

Background: Myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS) is common and associated with short- and long-term major cardiovascular events. Diagnostic criteria for MINS using Abbott high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) are unknown.

Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study of adults who had in-patient noncardiac surgery and measured hs-cTnI (Abbott Laboratories) on postoperative serum samples collected up to postoperative day 3.

Performance of the INTERGROWTH-21 and World Health Organization fetal growth charts for the detection of small-for-gestational age neonates in Latin America.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of INTERGROWTH-21 (IG-21 ) and World Health Organization (WHO) fetal growth charts to identify small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and fetal growth restriction (FGR) neonates, as well as their specific risks for adverse neonatal outcomes.

Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional study including 67 968 live births from 10 maternity units across four Latin American countries. According to each standard, neonates were classified as SGA and FGR (birth weight <10 and less than third centiles, respectively).
