Article Synopsis
  • Inadvertent intraneural injections during peripheral nerve blocks are common, and this study compares two detection methods: injection pressure monitoring and ultrasound imaging.
  • The research involved anesthesiologists conducting intraneural injections on fresh cadaver arms, measuring both pressure and sonographic images to evaluate outcomes.
  • Results showed that pressure monitoring detected intraneural injection much earlier than ultrasound (after just 0.2 mL vs. 1.2 mL for swelling), confirming that pressure monitoring is a more sensitive technique.

: As adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells are becoming the tool of choice for many clinical applications; standardized cryopreservation protocols are necessary to deliver high-quality samples. For this purpose, the cryopreservation and thawing of native adipose tissue under GMP conditions could represent an extremely useful and powerful tool for the direct reinfusion of the tissue, and consequently, of its stromal vascular fraction. : In this study, 19 samples of adipose tissue were cryopreserved and characterized before and after storage in liquid nitrogen vapors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of recombinant activated factor VIIa (rFVIIa) for treating severe postpartum hemorrhage (sPPH) through a multi-center randomized controlled trial and observational studies.
  • In the RCT, a significantly lower percentage of women treated with rFVIIa required invasive procedures compared to those who did not receive the treatment, although this was not confirmed in the observational studies.
  • Safety analysis revealed no increase in thromboembolic events for rFVIIa-treated women compared to non-treated women, indicating that while the efficacy may vary, the treatment is relatively safe.

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome: Differential diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment concepts.

Clin Genet

January 2020

Istituto di Ricerca Genetica e Biomedica, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Cagliari, Italy.

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by hyperthermia, camptodactyly, feeding and respiratory difficulties often leading to sudden death in the neonatal period. The affected individuals who survived the first critical years of life, develop cold-induced sweating and scoliosis in early childhood. The disease is caused by variants in the CRLF1 or in the CLCF1 gene.

Exome sequencing in Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome-like individuals reveals unpredicted alternative diagnoses.

Clin Genet

May 2019

Istituto di Ricerca Genetica e Biomedica, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Monserrato, Cagliari, Italy.

Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a complex phenotype (hyperthermia and feeding difficulties in the neonatal period, followed by scoliosis and paradoxical sweating induced by cold since early childhood) and a high neonatal lethality. CS/CISS is a genetically heterogeneous disorder caused by mutations in CRLF1 (CS/CISS1), CLCF1 (CS/CISS2) and KLHL7 (CS/CISS-like). Here, a whole exome sequencing approach in individuals with CS/CISS-like phenotype with unknown molecular defect revealed unpredicted alternative diagnoses.
