Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on society, particularly on children and adolescents, who have faced serious social, educational, and health consequences due to the loss of their primary caregivers.
Materials And Methods: Female fertility rates were analyzed, and estimates of male fertility were made to calculate the number of children under 18 years old by age group. Demographic and mortality information from COVID-19 infection was used to calculate the resulting orphanhood in Argentina during the period 2020-2021, considering the loss of one or both parents or the main caregiver grandparent.

Introduction: Kidney transplant continues to be the best treatment option for patients with end-stage chronic renal failure. The shortage of organs and long waiting times mean that many patients arrive at the transplant with a significant level of deterioration. The objective was to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic variables and knowledge about pre-emptive kidney transplant in the pre-transplant consultation.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, and its presentation differs according to age and sex. Recent studies have revealed differences in AF among various demographic groups, including the Latin American population.
Objectives: To better understand potential disparities in AF prevalence and treatment strategies in the Brazilian population through data from a large multicentric prospective registry.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrythmia, but still underdiagnosed especially among asymptomatic patients.
Objectives: To evaluate a simple strategy to optimize the identification of AF.
Methods: Asymptomatic patients aged 65 years or older, with hypertension or heart failure (HF), were included.

To determine subclinical cardiovascular disease (sCVD) in middle-aged women with clinically manifested hand osteoarthritis (HOA) and to improve the characterization of cardiovascular risk in this population. We cross-sectionally evaluated the relationship between HOA and sCVD in 1,803 volunteers from the Mexican Teachers' Cohort. From 2012 to 2016, a subsample from Mexico City, the Northern state Nuevo León, and the Southern states Chiapas and Yucatán was invited for clinical evaluations, during which neurologists examined carotid arteries using ultrasound, and a standardized HOA questionnaire was also administered.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of simple open versus laparoscopic nephrectomies for treating benign renal pathologies, with a focus on comparing the prevalence of surgical complications at a first-level center in Mexico City.
Methods: A retrospective analysis spanning 2010-2020 was conducted where all patients undergoing simple nephrectomy for benign conditions were included and stratified into open and laparoscopic surgery groups. Variables analyzed included urological history, laboratory findings, surgical outcomes, complications, and histopathological results.

In the past thirty years, childhood obesity rates have risen significantly worldwide, affecting over 340 million children in affluent nations. This surge is intricately tied to metabolic disorders, notably insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the continually evolving spectrum of metabolic-associated (dysfunction) steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This review underscores the alarming escalation of childhood obesity and delves comprehensively into the evolving and dynamic changes of nomenclature surrounding diverse conditions of hepatic steatosis, from the initial recognition of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to the progressive evolution into MASLD.

: During the COVID-19 pandemic, several studies demonstrated the effectiveness of lung ultrasound (LUS) as a frontline tool in diagnosing and managing acute SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. However, its role in detecting post-COVID-19 lung sequelae remains to be fully determined. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LUS in identifying lung parenchymal damage, particularly fibrotic-like changes, following COVID-19 pneumonia, comparing its performance to that of CT.

Infective endocarditis (IE) associated with implantable cardiac devices (ICD) is a serious disease with high mortality rates. The increased number of ICD implants has led to increased ICD infection rates. The aim of this study was to characterize clinical, laboratory profiles and the prognosis of cardiac-device-related endocarditis (CDIE), as well as to identify predictors of in-hospital death.

Background: Randomized controlled trials suggest that prophylactic doses of anticoagulants effectively prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized medical patients with high thromboembolic risk. However, no prospective studies exist regarding the real-world prevalence of prophylactic anticoagulant use. This prospective study aimed to determine the rate and predictors of thromboprophylaxis in an unselected population of patients hospitalized in medical departments.

Risk factors for the development of severe COVID-19 include several comorbidities, but age was the most striking one since elderly people were disproportionately affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among the reasons for this markedly unfavorable response in the elderly, immunosenescence and inflammaging appear as major drivers of this outcome. A finding that was also notable was that hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 have an accumulation of senescent T cells, suggesting that immunosenescence may be aggravated by SARS-CoV-2 infection.
