Article Synopsis
  • A patient with sickle cell trait showed a rare eye issue called pachychoroid neovascular membrane, which caused problems in his vision.
  • Doctors did various tests, including eye scans and blood tests, to confirm his condition and decided to treat it with laser therapy and medicine that helps prevent blood vessel growth in the eye.
  • Even though sickle cell trait is usually not very serious, it can still cause eye problems in some cases, so doctors need to pay attention to it when treating certain eye diseases.

Gross-total resection of foramen magnum meningiomas remains the gold standard of treatment and should be performed whenever possible. The transcondylar approach (and its variations) represents the most used approach for meningiomas located in the lateral or anterior borders of the foramen magnum. Endoscopic transclivus approaches represent a useful option in selected cases of anterior midline foramen magnum meningiomas, to be performed in centers with advanced experience in endoscopic skull base surgery, with the caveats of increased risk of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak.

CyberKnife Radiosurgery for refractory bilateral trigeminal neuralgia. Case report.

Colomb Med (Cali)

June 2023

Universidad de Sucre, Facultad Ciencias de la Salud, Grupo de Ciencias Médicas y Farmacéuticas. Sincelejo, Colombia.

Unlabelled: Case description: A case of a 37-year-old female patient suffering from refractory bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is presented, who underwent various interventions such as acupuncture, block therapies and even microvascular decompression without effective pain relief.

Clinical Findings: Paresthesias and shooting-like twinges of pain intensity 10/10 in bilateral maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve, with nasal and intraoral triggers that made eating impossible, becoming increasingly severe since refractoriness to microvascular decompression and carbamazepines, triggering the twinges even during sleep, generating somnolence, depressive mood and social isolation.

Treatment And Results: The patient was evaluated by an interdisciplinary neuro-oncology team, where, in accordance with the analysis of the brain magnetic resonance imaging and the patient's history, it was indicated to perform Cyberknife® radiosurgery in monofraction on the left trigeminal and subsequently treat the contralateral trigeminal.

Fundación Oftalmológica de Santander Carlos Ardila Lülle, Foscal, Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia; Centro Oftalmológico Virgilio Galvis, Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia. Electronic address:

The formation of a macular hole after vitrectomy due to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a rare complication. Although there are different surgical options in the treatment of these macular holes with favorable outcomes, it has been shown that the history of macula-off retinal detachment is the most important risk factor related to the need for multiple interventions to close these macular holes, therefore special attention should be paid in the management of these patients. We present the case of a patient with macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who required treatment with cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant and pars plana vitrectomy.

Background: Diabetes-related foot complications have been identified as the most common isolated cause of morbidity among patients with diabetes and the leading cause of amputation. Therefore, new strategies to stimulate skin regeneration may provide a novel therapeutic approach to reduce non-healing ulcer disease. Recently, we demonstrated in proof-of-concept in humans that administration of allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cellss derivatives (allo-hBM-MSCDs) is effective in a similar way to the use of allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cellss (allo-hBM-MSCs) in grade 2 diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

Introduction Meningiomas are extra-axial central nervous system tumors. Complete resection is often curative with macroscopically complete removal of the tumor, excision of its dural attachment, and any abnormal bone. Radiosurgery is also an option for high-risk patients or in patients with surgically residual disease.

Introduction We report our initial series of patients treated with radiosurgery to the Centromedian (CM) and Parafascicular (Pfc) Complex (CM-Pf) of the contralateral thalamus mainly for trigeminal neuralgia that had failed most known forms of conventional treatments. The coordinates were co-registered to a three-dimensional atlas of the thalamus in order to have a better comprehension of isodose curves distribution. Methods A fully automated rotating gamma ray unit was used to deliver a high dose of radiation (140 Gy) using a 4-mm collimator to the CM-Pf of the contralateral thalamus in 14 patients suffering from refractory trigeminal pain and other complex pain syndromes.
