Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most prevalent oral mucosal immunological diseases. Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is a diagnostic technique that enables real-time microscopic imaging during microscopic examination and evaluation of epithelial structures with 1000-fold magnification. CLE can be used in the diagnosis of various pathologies, in pneumology, and in urology, and it is very widely utilized in gastroenterology, most importantly in the diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus (BE), esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), biliary strictures, and cystic pancreatic lesions. A literature search was made in MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar databases while focusing on diagnostics using CLE of BE and EAC.

Oral probiotics are increasingly used in the harmonization of the oral microbiota in the prevention or therapy of various oral diseases. Investigation of the antimicrobial activity of the bacteriocinogenic strain K12 against oral pathogens shows promising results, not only in suppressing growth, but also in eliminating biofilm formation. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate five polymorphisms in the SLC6A4 gene in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and healthy controls.

Design: Totally, 239 subjects were enrolled in this case-control study: 86 patients with RAS and 153 healthy individuals were genotyped for serotonin transporter length polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) polymorphism, variable number tandem repeat (STin2) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs25531, rs3813034, rs1042173) in the SLC6A4 gene by polymerase chain reaction with/without restriction analysis.
