Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy has long been accepted as a method to improve survival and lifetime quality of rectal cancer patients. However, physiologic effects of these therapies largely depend on the resistance of cells to the radiation, type of chemotherapeutic agents and individual responses. As one of the signaling cascades involved in chemo- or radiation- resistance, the present study focused on several proteins involved in pTEN/Akt/mTOR pathway to explore their prognostic significance.

This paper describes the feasibility of Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform mid-infrared (ATR-MIR) spectroscopy method coupled with chemometrics for the rapid diagnostic approach and screening spectral changes for gastric and colon cancers from paraffin-embedded tissues. A total number of 82 tissue samples were analyzed by a simple ATR-MIR method combined with PCA, HCA, SIMCA and LDA methodologies. Spectral analyses showed significant differences for the molecular contents particularly about the lipid, nucleic acid, protein and other biomolecules in the samples of gastric cancer (GC) and colon cancer (CC) groups from their control/healthy groups.

We describe the case of a 74-year-old female patient previously treated with radiation therapy for a meningioma of the skull base and with surgery for a right tympanic paraganglioma. After the morphological progression of the meningioma demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the patient underwent somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography/computed tomography (SR-PET/CT) with Gallium-68 DOTATATE for restaging. This examination showed increased somatostatin receptor expression by the meningioma and confirmed its extension as already assessed by MRI (endocranial extension, skull base involvement and invasion of the right orbit).

In external radiotherapy (RT), the use of flattening filter-free (FFF) radiation beams obtained by removing the flattening filter (FF) in standard linear accelerators is rapidly increasing, and the benefits of clinical use are the issue of research. Advanced treatment techniques have increased the interest in the operation of linear accelerators in FFF mode. The differences of the beams with non-uniform dose distribution created by removing FF compared to the beams with uniform dose distribution used as a standard were examined.

Molecular imaging methods are currently used in the management of patients with lung cancer. Compared to non-small cell lung cancer, less data are available about the impact of molecular imaging using fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) in staging patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to provide quantitative data about the impact of F-FDG PET/CT in staging SCLC.

Classic prognostic factors, such as clinical advancement of the disease and histological grade of the tumor, continue to have a decisive role in the selection of therapeutic strategy in patients with carcinoma of the oral cavity floor and oral surface of the tongue (OCC). YAP1/Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif, WWTR1 (TAZ) proteins, appear to be promising markers that may be used to develop personalized therapies. The aim of the present study was to analyze the associations between the levels of YAP, TAZ and tyrosine-protein phosphatase non-receptor type 14 (PTPN14) and to determine whether the increased expression of YAP and TAZ had an effect on tumor cell proliferation, as determined by minichromosome maintenance 7, DNA replication licensing factor 7 expression.
