Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common symptom of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and hypersomnia. The most common tools for assessing EDS are various specialized questionnaires such as Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS). However, the scores obtained from self-rating questionnaires do not seem to measure physiological sleepiness but rather a more complex phenomenon of subjective sleepiness modulated by other factors such as motivation, expectation, and capability of self-perception.

Background And Objectives: In the early period after liver transplantation, patients are exposed to a high rate of complications and several scores are currently available to predict adverse postoperative outcomes. However, an ideal, universally accepted and validated score to predict adverse events in liver transplant recipients with hepatitis C is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to establish and validate a machine learning (ML) model to predict short-term outcomes of hepatitis C patients who underwent liver transplantation.

In the relatively short period of time since December 2019, hundreds of millions of people globally have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, irrespective of their age, gender or ethnicity. Over that time, numerous mutations of various degrees of virulence and pathogenicity have occurred. The course of COVID-19 infection, an acute disease caused by the virus, is rather varied, ranging from asymptomatic or symptoms of common viral respiratory diseases to critical, with multiorgan failure and high mortality in high-risk patients.

Aging is a risk factor for many chronic noncommunicable diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is often associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Moreover, aging is associated with a mild form of systemic inflammation. The aim of our study was to analyze the relationship between age, systemic and vascular inflammation, and the presence of CVD comorbidities in a stable COPD population.

  • Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are increasingly used as an alternative to warfarin for treating acute pulmonary thromboembolism due to fewer drug interactions and no need for frequent INR monitoring.
  • A cross-sectional study analyzed data from 836 patients, finding that 38.5% used DOACs, primarily rivaroxaban, due to challenges in maintaining effective INR levels with warfarin.
  • The findings suggest that DOACs are gaining popularity for real-life treatment, highlighting the significance of updated clinical data in guiding their use.

Since epidemiological arguments favouring self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic are widely recommended, the consequences of social isolation/loneliness of older people considered to be at higher risk for severe illness are neglected. We identified and described medical, social, psychological, and religious issues, indirectly generated by the COVID-19 lockdown. Mortality induced by SARS-CoV-2 and death from other "neglected" issues were put in balance.

The issue of the COVID-19 pandemic occupies the agenda of the whole world. The pivot of this pandemic is a crucial element that has become almost as important as the virus itself, namely the lockdown. Although, the rationale for lockdown is well-sustained by strong epidemiological arguments, exploring the 'other' unwanted consequences of the contemporary COVID-19 pandemic is mandatory for coagulating a robust agreed position against the numerous problems generated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
