This is the latest review of joint-specific tools used to evaluate patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) surgery, which is an effective treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis. Due to the large number and multitude of scales and their variants used, a critical assessment of the available tools is necessary. In the article, we briefly describe six different clinical tools: the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, the Harris Hip Score, the Oxford Hip Score, the Mayo Hip Score, and the Rheumatoid and Arthritis Outcome Score.

Objective: To investigate whether orthopedic and traumatology residents who are undergoing training achieve competence in surgical techniques after completion of their specialization and to determine whether there are significant differences between the responses of residents from accredited and nonaccredited institutions.
Methods: A total of 131 orthopedics and traumatology residents from nine institutions in the İstanbul province answered the questionnaire during the morning training meeting. In addition to basic demographic data, level of seniority, equipment competence, and theoretical and practical training, the residents were asked about their opinion on what type of surgeries they could perform after their specialization, considering the surgery and follow-up of the case as well as the complications occurring during this period.

Background: The reorganization of bone tissue is closely associated with its metabolism and changes in its internal structure. Metabolism of the bone, which results from the simultaneous processes of resorption and formation of new bone tissue, may depend on the presence and type of arthritis.
Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess, based on the morphological features and mineral composition of bone tissue, changes in the femoral head in various types of hip joint degeneration.

Background: Tumor-induced or oncogenic osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome in which osteomalacia is a consequence of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) secretion by a mesenchymal tumor. The localization of the culprit lesion in patients with TIO is often challenging. Several studies have evaluated the detection rate (DR) of these tumors using somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography (SSTR-PET/CT).

Aim Of The Study: To offer a glimpse into the orthopaedic practice in Romania during the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, corresponding to a period when this surgical specialty was defining itself.
Introduction: As in other parts of the world, in Romania, the orthopaedics and traumatology specialty derived from the main general surgery core. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Romanian doctors were eager to improve and to further develop the medical practice in their home country and, thus, the development of the orthopaedics and traumatology also benefited from this enthusiasm.

Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is an established surgical procedure that has provided satisfactory results. The aim of the present study was to correlate the clinical outcomes of a series of 20 patients treated by ACI at a 7-year follow-up examination with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2-mapping 5-year follow-up findings. We evaluated 20 patients using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score preoperatively and the established follow-up protocol until 87.

Chordomas are rare, malignant bone tumors of the skull-base and axial skeleton. Until recently, there was no consensus among experts regarding appropriate clinical management of chordoma, resulting in inconsistent care and suboptimal outcomes for many patients. To address this shortcoming, the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the Chordoma Foundation, the global chordoma patient advocacy group, convened a multi-disciplinary group of chordoma specialists to define by consensus evidence-based best practices for the optimal approach to chordoma.

As one of the fundamental requirements for an optimal function of the locomotive system is the integrity of the skeleton, the morphology of proximal humerus is crucial for upper limb performance. Not only that the bone is the support for muscle insertion, but its particular form is responsible especially for the complex movement of the shoulder joint, so that any pathological features of this morphology results in different degrees of dysfunction. Since trauma is the most frequent cause for morphological changes of this area, this paper studies the anatomical landmarks, which are affected by proximal humeral fractures and must be targeted when treating these injuries, for they influence the functional outcome.

Due to increasing number of arthroplasties and osteosynthesis, foreign body reaction to implants is a major problem for orthopedic surgeons, since it is considered to be responsible for severe complications impairing the outcome of the treatment and requiring multiple surgery. Different mechanisms have been described as being involved, and research is focused on finding biomaterials with increased biocompatibility in order to minimize these complications. The clinical aspect of this reaction is usually dominated by chronic pain, with mild functional deficits, and the diagnosis results from excluding other causes of chronic pain, such as infection, osteoarthritis, peripheral neuropathies or angiopaties.

Introduction: In the assessment of hand and upper limb function, grip strength is of major importance. Use of the JAMAR dynamometer has been an accepted test of grip strength and routinely part of the physical examination.
Purpose Of The Study: The aim of this study was to determine by means of a median nerve block simulating a patient group if the measurement of different types of grip force can improve the quantification of impairment of the hand beyond the sole power grip measurements.

The implant-bone interface is the scene of competition between microorganisms and distinct types of tissue cells. In the past, various strategies have been followed to support bony integration and to prevent bacterial implant-associated infections. In the present study we investigated the biological properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) surfaces containing silver nanoparticles.

Introduction: Due to their high complication rate and negative impact of those complications upon the knee and the whole lower limb, distal femoral fractures require optimal restoration of the functional anatomy and stable fixation thus allowing early recovery. This paper presents the experience of the authors regarding the indications and results of the most accepted surgical methods, including late complications affecting the knee.
Material And Method: 36 patients with closed distal femoral fractures (21-81 yrs old) operated in Bucharest, Clinical Emergency Hospital, Orthopedics and Trauma Clinic, were retrospectively studied from the point of view of the fracture and implant type, functional results and complications.

Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology, University of Parma, Parma, Italy.
The purpose of this technical note and accompanying video is to describe a modified arthroscopic suture fixation technique to treat tibial spine avulsion fractures. Twenty-one patients underwent arthroscopic treatment for tibial spine avulsion with our technique; they were clinically and biomechanically evaluated at 2 years' follow-up and showed optimal clinical and radiographic outcomes. Repair with this arthroscopic technique provides a significant advantage in the treatment of type III and IV fractures of the tibial eminence by obtaining arthroscopic fixation within the substance of the anterior cruciate ligament: suture methods based on the avulsed bone fragment are technically impossible, but sutures through the base of the ligament itself provide secure fixation, reducing the risks of comminution of the fracture fragment and eliminating the time for hardware removal.
