Introduction: Hormone changes during pregnancy lead to increased plasma lipid levels. When there is added disorder of lipid metabolism, this otherwise physiological change can cause extremely high triglyceride levels with potentionally life-threatening complications, such as non-biliary acute pancreatitis.
Materials And Methods: We present a case report of a 27-year-old pregnant woman with familial hyperchylomicronemia and a history of 7 hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis attacks.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe real world extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) measurements obtained by pulse index continuous cardiac output (PiCCO) on the day of admission. These were then related to a radiologic score for lung edema, Halperin score and both the Halperin score and EVLWI were assessed for prediction of in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients.
Methods And Results: A total of 311 patients admitted to a tertiary medical university hospital between February 2004 and December 2010 were included in this retrospective analysis and of these 177 patients were intubated.

Genome-wide and candidate gene studies for pulmonary sarcoidosis have highlighted several candidate variants among different populations. However, the genetic basis of functional rare variants in sarcoidosis still needs to be explored. To identify functional rare variants in sarcoidosis, we sequenced exomes of 22 sarcoidosis cases from six families.

Background: In this study we sought to examine whether transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is followed by a change in the plasma levels of novel cardiovascular biomarkers.
Methods: We collected blood samples of 79 patients with severe aortic valve stenosis undergoing TAVI before and at 7 days, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months post TAVI and analyzed the plasma concentrations of GDF-15, H-FABP, fetuin-A, galectin 3, sST2 and suPAR by means of ELISA.
Results: There was a significant increase in the concentration of fetuin-A (median: 52.

ADHD is a psychiatric disorder which is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity and attention problems. Due to recent findings of microbial involvement in other psychiatric disorders like autism and depression, a role of the gut microbiota in ADHD pathogenesis is assumed but has not yet been investigated. In this study, the gut microbiota of 14 male ADHD patients (mean age: 11.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) is a neurovisceral lipid storage disorder. At the cellular level, the disorder is characterized by accumulation of unesterified cholesterol and glycolipids in the lysosomal/late endosomal system. NP-C is transmitted in an autosomal recessive manner and is caused by mutations in either the (95% of families) or gene.

The aim of this study was to determine whether cough sensitivity is changed after adenoidectomy in atopic children with chronic cough. 21 Children having symptoms of chronic cough and adenoid hypertrophy verified by nasal fiberoptic endoscopy were submitted to cough sensitivity measurement before and after adenoidectomy. Their pulmonary function was within normal range.

Background And Purpose: The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) contributes to fibrosis in various tissues, and MR antagonists, like eplerenone, are used to prevent fibrosis. The role of MR antagonists in hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis is unknown. Here, we investigated the role of MRs and eplerenone in cirrhosis development.

Obesity is associated with alterations in functionality of immune cells, like macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells, leading to an increased risk for severe infections and several cancer types. This study aimed to examine immune cell populations and functional NK cell parameters focusing on NK cell subset phenotypes in normal-weight and obese humans. Therefore, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from normal-weight and obese individuals and analyzed by flow cytometry.

Purpose: Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was reported to be associated with mortality in heart failure patients. We aimed to evaluate admission BUN concentration in a heterogeneous critically ill patient collective admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) for prognostic relevance.
Methods: A total of 4176 medical patients (67±13 years) admitted to a German ICU between 2004 and 2009 were included.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease that mainly affects the lung. A role of microbial factors in disease pathogenesis is assumed, but has not been investigated systematically in a large cohort. This cross-sectional study compared the lung microbiota of 71 patients with sarcoidosis, 15 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (non-infectious controls) and 10 healthy controls (HCs).

Aviscumine, a recombinant lectin I, has been identified as an immunomodulatory agent within a new class of ribotoxic stress-inducing anticancer substances that have demonstrated efficacy in phase I/II trials. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the presumed effect of aviscumine on enhancing human natural killer (NK) cell antitumor cytotoxicity. To measure the effect of aviscumine on human NK cell cytotoxicity, chromium-51-release assays against K-562 cells were performed with isolated NK cells from the whole blood of 34 healthy volunteers.

The introduction of the new direct antiviral agents has revolutionized the therapy of chronic hepatitis C. Today we are able to cure the vast majority of our patients with an 8- to 12-week therapy course of an antiviral combination therapy with an excellent safety profile. Real-life data are very important to further develop our experience with the new therapeutics and help us to improve the care of our patients in our everyday clinical practice.

The uterine corpus represents the most common site for tumour development in the female genital system. Uterine neoplasms are categorised as epithelial, mesenchymal, mixed epithelial-mesenchymal or trophoblastic tumours. In this study we employed a mouse genetic approach using the MuLE lentiviral gene regulatory system to functionally test the ability of ecotropic lentiviruses to model epithelial and mesenchymal uterine malignancies ex vivo and in vivo.

Introduction: The presence of preformed HLA-reactive antibodies in recipient serum before transplantation has long been recognized as a prominent risk factor for a generally worse graft outcome. Screening and identification of HLA antibodies can be used to stratify patients into high- and low-risk categories.
Materials And Methods: We determined patients' anti-HLA antibodies using flow cytometry panel-reactive antibody (flowPRA) screening, specifying more than 5% after positive screening.

The lactate/albumin ratio has been reported to be associated with mortality in pediatric patients with sepsis. We aimed to evaluate the lactate/albumin ratio for its prognostic relevance in a larger collective of critically ill (adult) patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). A total of 348 medical patients admitted to a German ICU for sepsis between 2004 and 2009 were included.

The present study was performed to investigate the diurnal expression pattern of cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB₁) and type 2 (CB₂) in liver tissue of 12- and 51-week-old normoglycemic Wistar rats. By using real-time RT-PCR, daytime dependent changes in both age groups and, for both, hepatic and receptor mRNA levels were measured. Highest amount of mRNA was detected in the light period (ZT3, ZT6, and ZT9) while the lowest amount was measured in the dark period (ZT18 and ZT21).

We present the case of a 63-year-old man with a history of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and systemic chemotherapy who suffered from progressive shortness of breath and peripheral edema. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a huge non-homogenous mass nearly completely filling the dilated right ventricle. The border of mass was not differentiable from the right ventricular myocardium.

Stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) seemed to be a promising therapy, however, large clinical trials brought differential outcome. It has been shown that paracrine effects of secretomes of stem cells rather than cell therapy might play a fundamental role. The present study seeks to compare cell processing protocols of clinical trials and investigate effects of differential cell culture conditions on chemokine secretion and functional effects.
