Mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene are the most frequent genetic alteration in cancer and are often associated with progression from benign to invasive stages with metastatic potential. Mutations inactivate tumor suppression by p53, and some endow the protein with novel gain of function (GOF) properties that actively promote tumor progression and metastasis. By comparative gene expression profiling of p53-mutated and p53-depleted cancer cells, we identified ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 5 (ENTPD5) as a mutant p53 target gene, which functions as a uridine 5'-diphosphatase (UDPase) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to promote the folding of N-glycosylated membrane proteins.

The pathogenesis of infectious agents with human tropism can only be properly studied in an in vivo model featuring human cells or tissue. Humanized mice represent a small animal model featuring human cells or tissue that can be infected by human-specific viruses, bacteria, and parasites and also providing a functional human immune system. This makes the analysis of a human immune response to infection possible and allows for preclinical testing of new vaccines and therapeutic agents.

Magnesium, one of the essential elements in the human body, has numerous favorable effects that offer a variety of possibilities for its use in obstetric anesthesia and intensive care. Administered as a single intravenous bolus dose or a bolus followed by continuous infusion during surgery, magnesium attenuates stress response to endotracheal intubation, and reduces intraoperative anesthetic and postoperative analgesic requirements, while at the same time preserving favorable hemodynamics. Applied as part of an intrathecal or epidural anesthetic mixture, magnesium prolongs the duration of anesthesia and diminishes total postoperative analgesic consumption with no adverse maternal or neonatal effects.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the differences in histopathological features of basal decidua and placenta in cases of preeclampsia with or without fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
Methods: A prospective case-control study included a study group consisting of 30 pregnant women with preeclampsia completed by cesarean section (CS), in 19 of whom preeclampsia was associated with IUGR, and in 11 it was not. The control group consisted of 20 healthy pregnant women delivered by elective CS.

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of body mass index in pregnancy on the CRP concentration in pregnant women and their newborn. The results of the study will serve as a guide for a more valid assessment of slightly elevated concentrations of CRP and a potential new guide for the treatment of newborns with antibiotics. The research is a cohort prospective study of 2 groups of pregnant women and their newborn with respect to the body mass index of the pregnant women prior to delivery.

Background: Minimally invasive surgery is a major pillar of gynecological surgery. However, there are very few training opportunities outside the operation theater (OR) due to the cost and equipment requirements of organ simulators, virtual reality trainers (VRT) are promising tools to fill this gap.
Methods: Experienced and inexperienced participants of a minimally invasive surgery course followed the standardized HystSim™-VRT training program.

Background: Uterine adenosarcomas are rare malignant gynaecological tumours. Due to its submucous localization, they can be easily confound with benign tumours like endometrial polyps or submucous myomas. However, the treatment of uterine adenosarcomas requires an oncologic surgical approach.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression; however, the extent to which single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) interfere with miRNA gene regulation and affect cervical cancer (CC) susceptibility remains largely unknown. Here, we systematically analyzed miRNA-related SNPs and their association with CC risk, and performed a case-control study of miR-17-5p SNPs and CC risk in a Chinese population. Sixteen SNPs were genotyped in 247 CC cases and 285 controls.

Background: Alport syndrome is a genetic disease that progresses to chronic kidney failure, with X-linked, autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive type of inheritance. Women are generally carriers of the mutation and have a milder form of the disease. During pregnancy, they have an increased risk of impaired kidney function and preeclampsia.

Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer mortality in females worldwide. Infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is essential but insufficient to cause cervical cancer, and the clearance of HPV infection is mediated by the immune system. The deficit of molecules responsible for adhesion may play a role in the development of cervical cancer.

Glycosylation pattern within reproductive tract is now suggested to be involved in providing female immune tolerance for allograft sperm and developing embryo, but the information whether impaired glycosylation may influence male fertility potential is still limited. We have analyzed seminal plasma N-glycome in pooled samples derived from fertile and infertile men by means of MALDI-TOF/TOF tandem mass spectrometry. Among infertile subjects, normozoospermic, oligozoospermic, asthenozoospermic and oligoasthenozoospermic samples were obtained.

Background: Uterine perforation is the most common complication of curettage and may result in bleeding. Therefore, urgent control of bleeding from the uterine wall perforation is necessary to avoid an emergency hysterectomy or blood transfusion, to prevent peritoneal adhesion formation, possible chronic pelvic pain, and infertility. In the present case, an active bleeding secondary to a perforation of the uterus during curettage, for diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma, was instantaneously and successfully treated with only the application of a novel modified polysaccharide powder.

Background: Embryologically, duodenal atresia results from inadequate recanalisation and proliferation of gut epithelius in the 6th week of gestation, while apple-pee atresia of small bowel is a consequence of a vascular accident in subsequent embryonic development, and the two are rather rarely manifested as a joint clinical entity.
Case Presentation: We present here a 29 week preterm boy admitted to the intensive care unit due to breathing difficulties and low birthweight. Following clinical, radiographic and ultrasound examination, he was diagnosed with duodenal obstruction and subjected to surgical treatment.
